It took a lot of work to get PC parts to become interoperable. There’s all kinds of special negotiations that happen at boot to discover the state of hardware. There are standard drivers for most peripherals
Mobile devices aren’t expected to change hardware so everything is hard-coded into the ROM. No discovery protocols are supported. Standardized drivers make it hard to ship new features or squeeze every last bit of performance so no effort goes into making them
E-Ink would be nice, whether integrated as part of an OLED/LCD screen, or a separate module that goes over the top.
Most of the things that I use my phone for don’t generally need the full colour display (text isn’t that expensive to display), and I wouldn’t mind trading that for vastly better battery life that you can get from e-ink, but having the option to use both is probably the best way to go.
An IR transceiver wouldn’t go poorly either. It’s not something I use much, but it was handy to have when I did, whether to send things around, or to just use my phone as a remote for televisions and things.
Because the nuance of calling a PC a PC is that it supports a standard motherboard configuration and any Linux kernel will be able to boot. Mobile devices aren’t like this and every component requires a specialized driver to work.
And just to add to that, anyone who has installed Linux before knows that everything isn’t guaranteed to just work out of the box. Laptop WiFi cards, for example, frequently have driver issues. So it’s not quite as simple as OP is saying, even with PCs.
Weak hands got shaken out, and the economy is teetering on recession. When inflation stops and interest rates fall, and quantitative easing starts back up it’s gonna come roaring back. The SEC and CFTC aren’t trying to kill crypto, they are just trying to decide who’s jurisdiction it falls under. The crypto industry will benefit from regulation, it will get safer, and you’ll feel like an idiot for asking this question instead of buying while it’s cheap. Hit me up in 2025!
Oh boy do I have the phone for you Margot. Check out the ASUS ROG Phone 7 Ultimate. It has a USB-C port on the bottom as you’d expect but also one on the side for when you’re holding the phone horizontally but still want to charge.
Lemmy federation, server to server, is having a number of problems. Comments and postings aren’t always getting copied over to all the servers who have subscribers. For over a week, Lemmy.ml has had regular nginx 500 error codes on the front page, sometimes you have to refresh 3 or 4 times to get a page to load.
Growing pains.
When subscribing to communities it occasionally says “Subscribe Pending”
It seems so odd too because if I didn’t know better, I’d assume “Full or Top Grain” was lower quality than “Genuine Leather” just by how the phrases sound.
Max 4 inch screen, IR blaster, physical keyboard with speed dial settings for buttons, form factor like the Xperia x10 mini pro, headphone jack, cameraless, LED with customisable lights for different notifications, bonus - built in projector, satellite phone capability,
I want a Galaxy Fold style phone, but the external screen is eInk. Have it set to always show the book I am reading. This will let me read in bite sized pieces.
That would be awesome, although it might make the camera experience worse since you usually use the camera folded. I saw a prototype for a phone a while back that had a regular screen on one side and e-ink on the other, I always thought that was cool.
I’m new, an original refugee and don’t understand everything yet. I’m finding this place much more friendly and helpful and like it much better. I’m older (55) and used to work in IT, but all this still baffles me. I’m not going back because I abhor what’s going on. I’m hopeful that with time, all my favorite subs will be here and I already spend a lot of time here. I feel much more free to comment without fear of retribution and that’s a welcome relief. It was rather ostracizing on Reddit to feel that I shouldn’t comment because of all the negativity I would get. My life’s hard enough without getting put down for every little thing I said. I love it here and I’ve only been here for a week or so. Thanks everyone for being so nice.
Agreed but as time goes on and the community grows these things will come! The piracy community in general i think is pretty quick to switch platforms because we’re so used to main hubs going down overnight (i.e. rarbg, kat, etc) and having to find the new spot.
