toastman , to nostupidquestions in What Android app should I use to browse Lemmy?

Currently using Jerboa. I want simplicity and no clutter. It would be nice if there was a “collapse all” for comments. And would like to be able to double-click an image and have it zoom in.

Licensed_to_ill ,

Mostly just he collapse function for comments. It’s really necessary.

x3n0s ,

Just click on the text of the comment and it will collapse!

Nah, it’s just muscle memory. I only discovered it by accident.

Ghee sounds awesome for popcorn! I use refined coconut oil and Flavacol at the moment.

clueless_stoner ,
@clueless_stoner@lemmy.world avatar

Coconut oil for popcorn?! How does that affect the taste?

nihilist_hippie ,
@nihilist_hippie@lemmy.world avatar

You must use refined coconut oil. As long as it is refined, there is no coconut flavor. It basically just tastes like theatre popcorn, because that’s what they use. They just use a fancier version that has beta-carotene in it, for a nice yellow coloring.

Can't really go wrong if you start TNG at season 3.

MilliaStrange , to gaming in GOOD games with female protagonists?

Try Life is Strange: an emotional coming of age game about a photography student with the ability to rewind time. One of my favorites.

LukeSky53 , to android in What's something that was dismissed as a gimmick but you liked?

Does IR sensor count? I loved that on older phones so much.

CmdrShepard ,

Not a gimmick. It was great to control TVs, air conditioners, audio receivers, and even electronics projects using something like an arduino and an IR sensor. Such a shame that our smartphones have been stripped of so many features as companies have run out of good ideas to increase demand.

bionicjoey , to linux in Linux for the Airheaded Layman?

Arch is a bad distro for newbies. Go find an ISO for Kubuntu and install that. The install wizard is idiot-proof. I use KDE-based distros like Kubuntu even though I’m a fairly advanced user so don’t view it as some kind of failure. There’s no virtue in using more complicated stuff. Get comfortable with the easier distros first.

Reverse engineering is honestly great fun. I’ve been doing it for like 8 years on and off but there is still so much to learn.

I recommend crackmes.one for crackme challanges to sharpen your skills.

ironhydroxide , to android in What niche phone features would appeal to you?

Not really a feature of the phone, but a design theory. I want my small phone back. Not this “zenfone 9” size small. Like HTC One size small.

Make it bifold wallet sized, and ~1/2"thick.

These hugely tall phones where you can’t reach the top third if the screen without dropping the thing are just annoyingly huge. Then they make them so thin they can’t fit a big enough battery for a full day use.

Beyond that would like an under display fingerprint sensor. Rear and side mounted always have issues with cases for me, and make it more annoying when using the device while it’s on a desk.

hoyland , to gaming in GOOD games with female protagonists?

Extremely retro, but currently available on the Mac App Store: Mess O' Trouble. It was a WorldBuilder game--think Infocom, but with static pictures you could interact with. I believe your choice of Daredevil Dawn or Fearless Frank had some impact on the gameplay if you got far enough, but child me never did.

Mandy OP ,

Does this game exist on other platforms?

hoyland ,

Doubtful, though it might be possible to emulate System 6 or System 7 and get it running on Windows or Linux.

stranger , to nostupidquestions in Do you think that Lemmy will last or will it die in a few weeks?

I’m interested to see the outcome of Reddit, since I’ve been there for almost a decade, but I’m kinda liking the change to lemmy and I definitely don’t support Reddit’s decisions or direction. I think I’m going to stay here and delete my Reddit account once I see the results of the 30th

Mate, it wasn’t just created. This site has been around for a while

tanin , to youshouldknow in YSK: If you make popcorn in a pot on the stove, the oil to use is ghee.

I’ve always just used avocado oil. Sometimes coconut oil but that obviously leaves a faint hint of coconut that not everyone likes. I’ll try ghee next time but I never heard of anyone trying to make pop corn with just butter in the pan. That sounds like a mistake folks only make once! lol

RalphTheDog ,

The makers of my commercial-grade popper recommend coconut oil. Like you, I am interested in trying ghee. It’s good to just have a bottle of that stuff handy for lots of things.

Stabbywithsocks1 ,

I think ghee is clarified butter.

themeatbridge ,

They are pretty much the same thing. Clarified butter can be skimmed as soon as the milk solids begin to separate. Ghee is cooked until the solids become browned and settle to the bottom, giving it more of a nutty flavor.

rancidity9480 , to technology in What's currently the best Lemmy app for Android?

I’ll put my thoughts on this post as it showed up as I scrolled to get to the one from a day or two ago…I have 5 different Lemmy apps installed right now. Figure that there is going to be a lot of experimentation and work being done right now, so it’s nice to see what everyone is doing.

  • Jerboa - Personally, I really like Jerboa. Being the most mature of the bunch shows. It’s well laid out, has just enough UI options, and works. Except that now Beehaw isn’t on v0.18.
  • Connect - Not open source at this time, I get why that matters to people, but not a deal breaker for me. Typing this comment in Connect. Just updated this morning with additional and redesigned settings. There is about a thumbs width of space between this comment box and my keyboard. That’s kind of yucky.
  • Liftoff - I’m hopeful for this one. It LOOKS the best to me, but there’s some weird UX issues. Biggest being that the only place to see your replies/notifications is the top of the Home feed with no quick way to get there if you’ve been scrolling.
  • Thunder - I can see the potential, but it’s not for me right now. No buttons on comments, you have to use swipe gestures. But posts have buttons. Changing UI options doesn’t actually change anything 95% of the time.
  • Summit - You want a zero frills, dark mode way of browsing and interacting? This is that. I’d love a FEW options (like light mode), but it’s fast and easy. Uhh…just realized I can’t find a way to make a new post…
  • Wefwef.app - Last one. Really slick looking and responsive, but too iOS-y for me. It also claims to have light mode, but I can’t figure out how to switch it. Really polished though.
