Tarquinn2049 , to nostupidquestions in I grew up in the era of Photoshop and people would post fake nudes. Why is it now a big deal that AI is doing it? Kinda like the Taylor Swift thing on twitter.

It’s a bit of a blend of it has always been a big deal, and that it is indeed more of a big deal still now because of how easy, accessible, and believable the AI can be. Like even nowadays, Photoshop hits only one point of that triangle. But it was even less capable back in the day. It could hit half of one of those points at any given time.

Basically, a nude generated by a good AI has to be proven false. Because it doesn’t always immediately seem as such at first. If you have seen obvious AI fakes, they are just that, obvious. There are many non-obvious ones that you might have seen and not known they were fake. That is, of course, assuming you have looked.

The other reason it can be more of a big deal now is that kids have been doing it of other kids. And since the results can be believable, the parents didn’t know they were fake to start with. So it would blow up as if it was real before finding out it was AI. And anything involving that is gonna be a big deal.

Tarquinn2049 ,

I mean, that was an issue in the first month or so. Though I could see if the automated tools people use for this specific purpose might not stay up to date. I haven’t specifically interacted with those. But proper AI tools have in-filling to correct mistakes like that, you can keep the rest of the image and just “reroll” a section of it until whatever you didn’t like about it is fixed. Super quick and easy.

TrickDacy ,

Even just a week or two ago it was common for posts to show that was still an issue.

CalcProgrammer1 , to linux in Tell me about glue please: How do you connect a microcontroller that conditionally executes code in different languages over USB serial on a typical desktop distro?
@CalcProgrammer1@lemmy.ml avatar

I’m not sure about FF specifically, but 99% of the time you’re connecting a microcontroller to a PC you’re doing so over a serial port (UART) of some sort. It may be a physical COM port or it may be a USB to serial adapter or even a purely virtual serial port over a USB connection, but the methodology is all the same. Unless you are running a serial terminal on that port (as in, a commandline on your PC served on the given /dev/ttyX interface, not a terminal emulator letting you read/write from the port), the microcontroller can’t just run scripts on the PC. Instead, you will want to write a script/program that opens the port and waits for a command to be sent from the microcontroller, then that listener script can execute whatever functionality you require. Note that only one application can have the port active at a time, so if your listener is a separate program from your event handler, you will have to close the port on the listener before running the handler, then reopen the port on the listener once the handler is done so it can start listening for the next event. Better to just make it all one program that is always running on the PC and does both listening for events and handling them so there’s only one program that needs access to the serial port.

MarauderIIC ,

Yup, pretty much this. I have a small touchscreen Arduino device that I keep plugged into my PC. When I hit a button on the touchscreen it sends some text over serial (which is really a USB wire). I have a Python script on the PC that continuously reads from the serial port and parses the received data to figure out what to do. Specifically it tells my Discord bot to play a sound :)

I got a few comments pointing this out. But media is hell bent on convincing people to hate AI tools and advancements. Why? I don’t know.

Tin foil hate is that it can be an equalizer. Powerful people that own media like to keep power tools to themselves and want the regular folk to fear and regulate ourselves from using it.

Like could you imagine if common folk rode dragons in GOT. Absolutely disgusting. People need to fear them and only certain people can use it.

Same idea. If you’re skeptical, go look up all the headlines about AI in the past year and compare them to right wing media’s headlines about immigration. They’re practically identical.

“Think of the women and children.”

“They’re TAKING OUR JOBS”

“Lot of turds showing up on beaches lately”

AFKBRBChocolate , to asklemmy in How to deal with being bald?

Older guy here, went bald in my 20s. Let me say this: while going bald or becoming bald sucks ass, being bald is fine. I had lots of thick hair, and when it started going away and I didn’t look like me in the mirror anymore. I figured women would find me less attractive.

What I learned is that it takes a while for your self image to catch up to your reflection in the mirror. One of the shitty things for most people about going bald is that it happens over a long time, and when you’re used to one level of baldness, it gets worse. But eventually it levels out.

There are women who aren’t attracted to bald guys (and that’s fine, attraction is subjective), but it turns out there are women who are especially attracted to bald guys, and that the vast majority of women don’t care. Doing things like having a comb-over or wearing a toupee are often a turnoff, but I think it’s as much because of the associated lack of confidence than the look itself.

I can sincerely say that I wouldn’t want my hair back today. The look suits me and it’s easier to deal with.

floofloof ,

The only bit that really sucks about being bald is if you don’t wear a hat you get skin cancer.

That’s exactly it. There was a grieving process for a few months as I came to terms with it, but now I don’t think I’d go back if given the chance. I’m a bald guy, I look good bald and can make bald jokes whenever the ice needs breaking.

TheLastHero , to asklemmy in How to deal with being bald?

Don’t try to half cope, everyone will smell the desperation. Gotta embrace it and stay all the way bald. Other men seem to notice and care more about it than women honestly.

Kanzar , (edited ) to nostupidquestions in What are some things you can do to maintain your teeth when you don't have health insurance and can't afford dental care?

Waterflossers are better than nothing. Best is floss to get the stuff wedged at the contact, then interdental brushes to get the stuff under the contact - these must be snug, otherwise you’re not effectively using them.

Soft and small toothbrush, preferably an electric with a pressure sensor. The counter oscillating Crest/Oral B type is probably the most affordable. Don’t need to get the top model. Some only time 2 minutes instead of 30s, so I’d recommend counting to 30 seconds (properly! Not rushing!) and do a quarter of your mouth at a time. Point at the gumline a little when you brush, approximately 45 degrees. You must push your lips and tongue out of the way. Do an extra minute after you’re done with 2 minutes. Do this at least twice daily, consider a third time during the day, and you must not skip the one just before you sleep. Do not consume anything but water after this and prior to sleep. Do not get a midnight snack.

Use neutrafluor/prevident 5000 toothpaste, or clinpro 5000. Extra fluoride means extra protection from acid challenges. Use neutrafluor mouthwash if you must use a m/w during the day. Do not rinse the paste off your teeth.

Eliminate where possible from your diet anything sour, tart, or fizzy. That includes soda water and citrus and ACV. Eliminate where possible sweet things, including fruit - especially dried fruit.

Rinse with plain water after eating and drinking.

Common triggers of heartburn are foods that may be fried, fatty, and or spicy. Some people are triggered by dairy or lactose, or eating too late before lying down.

Treat your heartburn by prevention, not relievers. If you experience any symptom relating to heartburn, rinse thoroughly with plain water. Do this too if you vomit for any reason.

If you have dry mouth, try Xylimelts or the new range Freshmelts (this doesn’t seem toxic to dogs). You can wear these during your sleep. Also treat the origin of your dry mouth.

…I’m sure I have other tips… But these are the most common ones I make to my patients.

SLVRDRGN ,

Another “not” stupid question - about the paste, I’ve seen this before where it says don’t rinse off the teeth. Does that mean you’re supposed to brush and spit out what you can, and just leave the foaming mess in your mouth as you sleep? I’m genuinely confused.

Kanzar ,

Once you’ve spat out as much as possible, it’s not a foaming mess, just a smear.

Many toothpastes don’t foam either.

If you dislike not rinsing at all, my tip is to brush, rinse, then smear a very small amount of fresh toothpaste on.

@01189998819991197253@infosec.pub avatar

Depends on your security and privacy postures.

From least private to most: stock, CalyxOS, GrapheneOS.

Security from updates on all three should be mostly comparable, as long as they keep receiving security updates, and you install them. However, CalyxOS has custom code, and tends to be slower to implement the updates.

I skimmed this comparison, and it seems pretty on point.

Some features are proprietary and, therefore, only available on stock. Personally, I went CalyxOS. I don’t miss any of the stock features, but built-in ai is useless for me. My security and privacy postures are evolving, and I may go GrapheneOS next phone. Not sure yet.

I have declared war on notifications. My immediate family, two closest friends, and my boss can call me. In no other circumstances will my phone make a noise or vibrate. I will check my texts when I feel like it.

Other than a few exceptions, no apps may show the notification badge either. Discord will show DMs and mentions from one or two servers. Everything else is blocked. My work email may show unread email. I’ve even turned off banners on my work chat app. I don’t think I’ve checked my personal email in months.

All my recurring charges are paperless + autopay. That’s another notification badge I forgot about - I have a budgeting app that can show transactions. I categorize them, make sure their categories are covered, and I’m done.

On the first of the month, I pay rent and set the budgeting app categories. Then I have nothing to worry about, and near-zero distractions. My biggest pain point in life is deciding what to eat for dinner.
