You’ve got those carrots in the wrong direction.

karlthemailman ,

Any specific reason you think they should be backwards? I have only limited exposure to the alternatives, but caddy was the easiest for me to set up when I was looking for a reverse proxy.

My main issue with caddy was having to compile in any extensions manually, but you don’t even need to do that anymore.

Protegee9850 ,

Eh, personally I just found NPM super easy to set up and manage, especially when it came to setting up letsencrypt etc. Everything just works. Easy to update, easy to manage, easy to take down and spin back up again. My OP had a bit of snark though, I’m not exactly an expert, I’m sure there are very good reasons why the OP and other smart nerds on this community may disagree

Digital Sharecropping:

“What’s being concentrated, in other words, is not content but the economic value of content. MySpace, Facebook, and many other businesses have realized that they can give away the tools of production but maintain ownership over the resulting products. One of the fundamental economic characteristics of Web 2.0 is the distribution of production into the hands of the many and the concentration of the economic rewards into the hands of the few. It’s a sharecropping system, but the sharecroppers are generally happy because their interest lies in self-expression or socializing, not in making money, and, besides, the economic value of each of their individual contributions is trivial. It’s only by aggregating those contributions on a massive scale – on a web scale – that the business becomes lucrative. To put it a different way, the sharecroppers operate happily in an attention economy while their overseers operate happily in a cash economy. In this view, the attention economy does not operate separately from the cash economy; it’s simply a means of creating cheap inputs for the cash economy.”

How is Stable Diffusion connected to bad/short term orientated social media company policy changes? The ChatGPT connection I understand, even if I don’t think it’s the root cause. (Interest rate increases I think are more fundamental, even if AI is cited by companies as an influence on their choices.)

As a phenomenon you'll see a lot of people call it "enshittification." The term seems to originate with Cory Doctorow who writes, "Here is how platforms die: first, they are good to their users; then they abuse their users to make things better for their business customers; finally, they abuse those business customers to claw back all the value for themselves. Then, they die."

The whole article on his blog is worth a read here: https://pluralistic.net/2023/01/21/potemkin-ai/#hey-guys. His Mastodon handle is @pluralistic if you'd like to follow his work there (woohoo federation!).

Xeelee ,

The main sticking point is profitability. Not many platforms have managed to create a business model that's sustainably profitable. Reddit certainly hasn't. Now they're basically looking for a way to cash out so they're prioritising short term profitability over everything.

TempleSquare ,

Honestly if reddit had come, cap in hand, and says “Hey what can we do to be awesome so you’ll buy premium”

And then listened to our advice? I’d have bought premium to help em out.

Instead, they are acting genuinely insane. Like back when my brother was on cocaine and Adderall and would try to hit me up for money.

Reddit can die.

aeternum ,

They're just trying to survive until they IPO. Then they can cash out and who gives a fuck about reddit after that.

Capital only looks out for itself. Online communities are a product to be exploited in the eyes of investors. The purse strings are getting tighter with rising interest rates, and investments that relied on potential are suddenly less exciting when the price to service goes up. Profit is king at the end of the day. It sucks, but that’s capitalism.

TempleSquare ,

But the good news is, tech is a highly disruptable industry. Barrier to entry is accessible for regular people.

And that’s why we’re here.

Reddit doesn’t die because we left. They die in a few years when the Fediverse just works better than Reddit. And we fund that.

Speaking of, how do I kick in a few bucks to help out various Lemmy servers? Anyone know?

Search for ‘Enshittification’ if you want a pretty good analysis of what’s going on. But basically greed, capitalism and the never ending pursuit of growth.

preciouspupp ,

Capitalism created reddit.

iByteABit ,
@iByteABit@kbin.social avatar

Capitalism is good at creating things, but terrible at maintaining their quality over time, because at the end of the day profits don't always go hand in hand with product quality

odigo2020 ,

The sad truth. For example, Insta Pot has gone bankrupt recently because they built their stuff too well, and no one needed to buy more than one. Capitalism is the reason we have planned obsolescence and deliberately poor build quality of products.

makr_alland ,

Workers created Reddit, like everything else. Economic systems don’t create anything, only determine who profits from those creations.

BobKerman3999 ,

workers created the platform, Reddit is the content that is freely created by the community. see how now all the search results are useless because users deleted their own content, but the platform is still there.

Edit I just found out that all my content that I edited + deleted a week ago and wasn’t visible then, is back.

To check if your data is still available on reddit just do a Google search putting site:reddit.com and your username after it in the search box. Google has still the username in the cache so when you click on the link you’ll find your content under a “deleted” username.

makr_alland ,

You’re right, I should have specified I was referring to the platform. My point was against the dumb narrative that capitalism creates anything.

Reddit CEO slams protest leaders, saying he’ll change rules that favor ‘landed gentry’

Reddit CEO Steve Huffman said Thursday that he wants to bring an end to a user-led protest that has made large parts of the influential website inaccessible this week. Huffman said in an interview that he plans to institute rules changes that would allow Reddit users to vote out moderators who have overseen the protest, comparing them to a “landed gentry.”

The protest took down thousands of message boards, known as subreddits, starting Monday, and some communities say they plan to continue the action indefinitely. The action has been led by Reddit’s unpaid, volunteer moderators, who have a high level of control over how their subreddits are run. Participating communities went “private,” making them unviewable even to members. The protesters oppose changes that will most likely cut off their ability to access Reddit through third-party apps, and their action has hobbled much of the site.

Huffman, also a Reddit co-founder, said he plans to pursue changes to Reddit’s moderator removal policy to allow ordinary users to vote moderators out more easily if their decisions aren’t popular. He said the new system would be more democratic and allow a wider set of people to hold moderators accountable.

Reddit’s current policy says moderators may be removed by higher-ranking moderators or by Reddit itself for inactivity or violations of Reddit-wide rules. They may also remove themselves. Many have held their positions for years.

“If you’re a politician or a business owner, you are accountable to your constituents. So a politician needs to be elected, and a business owner can be fired by its shareholders,” he said.

“And I think, on Reddit, the analogy is closer to the landed gentry: The people who get there first get to stay there and pass it down to their descendants, and that is not democratic.”

Moderators have argued that the high level of control over their communities is well-deserved because of the hours of free labor they’ve put into making and enforcing rules on their subreddits. Any plan to reduce their influence might result in another backlash.

Huffman, who co-founded Reddit 18 years ago this month, said he believes the leaders of the protest may have had popular support when it started Monday but have lost most of it since.

4bh1j47 ,

Can users vote out the CEO?

GoodEye8 ,

Interesting point about the future of Reddit in that article:

Huffman said, however, that he’d like some form of revenue-sharing.

“I would like subreddits to be able to be businesses if they choose,” he said, adding that’s “another conversation, but I think that’s the next frontier of Reddit.”

The long-term goal is monetization of subreddits. I’m glad I won’t be there to see that happen.
