I got my piantor yesterday and i really like it so far, it was a bit of a challenge to set everything up in a way i like. And my writing speed has deceased from 140 wpm to about 30. But that is just a matter of relearning to write on this keyboard and unlearning years of bad writing practices.

Is there any reason for them defederating?

marcos ,

Lemmy got a large influx of new people (you probably noticed that), and those new people weren't reading their gidelines (that are more strict than usual) before posting there.

If you decide to make an account there, make sure to read their guidelines first.

Overzeetop ,
@Overzeetop@kbin.social avatar

It's nominally a personnel/time issue. It's easier to defederate with rapidly growing instances than try and keep tabs on the flood of posts which are coming in from them. Lemmy.World, at least for a time, was still federated with some shitstances, also out of manpower limitations, and beehaw decided to just take their ball and leave. It's the way federation works and is entirely up to them, just as reddit raising api costs and kicking moderators is within their rights. Your server, your rules. We can argue whether it's the best way to manage and build a small platform, but its the state of things at the moment.

disc: I'm a member of lemmy.world, as well as a smaller lemmy instance and kbin, both of which are still federated with beehaw.

TheButtonJustSpins , to linux in is there a Linux alternative to windows 10/11 that is similar?

I highly recommend trying Manjaro. I haven’t moved past Windows 7, so I can’t compare directly to Win 10/11, but it’s the only Linux distro I’ve found that was Close Enough™ to Windows to make it possible for me to switch.

Like any Linux, things aren’t going to Just Work™ as often as in Windows, but this is the closest I’ve gotten.

Mininux ,
@Mininux@sh.itjust.works avatar

I recommend NOT using Manjaro, they have many issues, most described here: manjarno.snorlax.sh

for someone who wants an arch-based distro without tinkering too much there are other alternatives like endeavourOs, and I think Garuda too.

For someone who wants something that looks like windows, no need for Manjaro, just something with a desktop environment that looks like windows. I’d recommend Linux Mint, very simple to use (and for low end computers there is the XFCE edition), or distributions with KDE (fedora KDE, Kubuntu…) or maybe ZorinOS.

edit: also nobara Linux (based on fedora)may be good for games, they have a version that kinda feels like windows

teawrecks ,

I’ve been using Manjaro for a couple of years now on my desktop (with an Nvidia GPU). Their package situation is not great. Updating the Linux kernel and Nvidia drivers is a process separate from pamac that you have to just know to do, or one day X will break and now you have to figure out how to fix it.

On top of that, because they delay the release of non-aur repo packages for stability testing, but don’t delay aur, some aur packages will just break occasionally. I now manually install discord from their tar ball because of this.

Because of these little unnecessary quirks that you just have to know how to work around, I can’t recommend it for new Linux users, and honestly don’t recommend it to seasoned users either. I’m trying out endeavor OS on my laptop now and I think that is what I would recommend; but possibly only for more seasoned users because it’s arch. Might be more stable if you install the linux-lts package and remove linux.

Lol, that’s not a Linux thing, it’s a majaro thing.

Liftoff (Android) has an option to show All from multiple signed on accounts simultaneously. That might be worth checking out.

It’s under active development of course and I did find it in Google Play after searching by name (“Liftoff”) and scrolling down.

Good news. You can instal Wefwef and get the Apollo experience on android now. Give it a try and see how awesome it’s been for us iOS users

incognito_15 ,

I can’t seem to find wefwef in the play store. Is it there or does one need to side load it.

I’m dumb. You gotta go to the GitHub and go to the app in the web wefwef.app and “install” it.

It seems to think my account on Lemmy.world doesn’t exist and won’t load posts.

AllGoesUpMustGoDown ,

Using wefwef on lemmy.world currently does not work, ruud says he broke something. It just gives a problem fetching posts error for me.

Sharpie ,

You might want to try it again. A lot of Reddit alternatives have been struggling to keep up with the influx of new users.

You may also need to verify your email address. I had issues getting logged in when I created my account but I was using Mlem at the time.

With all of that said, I’m using wefwef right now.

Yes it seems to be working well now with my Lemmy.world account, thanks!

Commenting from Kbin on Firefox, where I have to rotate my phone to landscape orientation to read full comments. If I keep it in portrait, some comments will randomly run off the side of my view, and zooming out doesn't help.

It's not perfect. I'm very much hanging in there until some sort of upgrade comes along. Lemmy.world has been unable to get me signed in, so there's that.

GrossGhost ,
@GrossGhost@kbin.social avatar

Same here on a lower end Samsung, it's fine. IMHO I also think if people flock to apps for just a UI, it can take away some of the motivation to improve a site.

I guess it would if the repair shops respected it. I am using my insurance to get the screen fixed so I have no idea where it ends up. They just have a big disclaimer which mentions that you should make a backup because the phone will most likely be factory reset.

Borgzilla , to fediverse in Is it just me, or is the Lemmy search interface not... great?
@Borgzilla@lemmy.ca avatar

It would be cool if communities could be grouped by instance and if we could see the latest topic for each to get an bird’s-eye view of the discussions. Local communities should appear in the first group at the top of the page. I’m not sure if it’s currently possible, but being able to tag communities would be nice and allow for better search results.

johnnyjayjay OP ,

I think this exists in the "Communities" tab of each instance. There you can see the local communities (minus the latest post, and sorted by number of members I believe?)

Grouping/tagging might be cool though. One thing I'm rather curious about is how the "scattered" communities are going to play together (with multiple technology communities for example).
