This is great! Thank you! I’ve been struggling with finding new communities, so this is super helpful.

Cross compilling C/C++ package is a nightmare. Just use virtual machines or containers to build natively.

Do you have any good guides for doing that with containers?

Why the duplicate communities? My understanding was it shouldn’t matter where I subscribe to “games” the posts should be the same.

yote_zip ,
@yote_zip@pawb.social avatar

The posts are different on each server. They are effectively separate communities with separate names, counting the server as part of its name.

gelberhut ,
@gelberhut@feddit.de avatar

There are different communities. You can subscribe any of them from any instance, but they are not the same.

Like [email protected] and [email protected] are different emails, and you can mail any of them using your email provider.

whoisearth ,
@whoisearth@lemmy.ca avatar

Which is stupid imho. I don’t want to sub to 10 different /c/movies or even 2 different /c/nba. Mark my words you’re going to see a consolidation here if this takes off and you’re going to lose the federation appeal that people want (I couldn’t care less just want a Reddit alternative). Already I’ve unsubbed from communities to simply sub to the biggest one.

Let’s also ignore there’s an open issue from 2 years ago because no one apparently thought or cared of the scenario that some of us actually like a unified identity online and yet you can’t port your account across the fediverse.

Zeth0s ,

If it is so important for you to be so much outraged, I guess it is time for you to either learn to code and open a PR, or to pay someone to do it for you!

whoisearth ,
@whoisearth@lemmy.ca avatar

I know how to code don’t have the time. It’s potential I may look into it. Doesn’t change the fact that it’s two glaring issues that weren’t thought through and there’s many more that have been brought up.

Zeth0s ,

So you know the reason those issues are still opened. There are only 2 paid developers for the whole thing, backend, front end, Android app… Everyone else, as you, don’t have time. We need to accept it and live with it

whoisearth ,
@whoisearth@lemmy.ca avatar

You know I’m on this platform too? It’s completely acceptable to be critical and bring up those flaws without a need to make excuses. I understand there may be mitigating reasons that doesn’t make it more ok. Also, it is not “up to me alone” to fix these issues.

I am simply highlighting glaring concerns and I encourage everyone else to also do so. The alternative is to do as you say and “just accept it” which quite frankly is a shit way to live life.

thegiddystitcher ,
@thegiddystitcher@lemm.ee avatar

I get that you’re angry the new thing doesn’t work exactly the same as the thing you were used to. But take a deep breath, and remember they are in fact different things with their own pros and cons. Everything’s changing at a rapid rate. Some features you want will make it in, some features you want probably won’t, but there are ways to respectfully make and contribute to feature requests and have some small part in guiding the project in the direction you’d like to see.

whoisearth ,
@whoisearth@lemmy.ca avatar

Not sure about "stupid", but agree - most probably we will see consolidation in the future. This is rather usual scenario in general.

S_204 , to showerthoughts in Lemmy resembles the old reddit experience so well that they even emulate the old reddit server performance

It’s slower than reddit ever was… at least in the 14 years I was there.

oatscoop ,

I joined a smaller instance that more fits my interests, but is still federated with the “popular” ones I like. So far it works great.

SmokesForBreakfast ,

I still haven’t got a clue what this means. Goddamn it.

meekah ,
@meekah@lemmy.world avatar

Lemmy is not one big application like reddit. Instead everyone can download Lemmy and host their own >instance<. Each instance can have their own users, their own communities/subs and admins.

Since Lemmy is part of the >fediverse<, it means that each Lemmy instance can interact with each other, and can even interact with other applications of the fediverse (like mastodon, which is more similar to twitter).

Because everyone can make their own Lemmy instance, it is also possible for bad faith actors to make one. They could create many accounts on their own instance, and try to mess with the other Lemmy instances by either posting a lot of comments, reporting a lot of content, or a number of other things. To prevent that from being an actual issue, each instance has the option to >defederate< other instances. (I am not 100% sure on the following so please correct me if I’m wrong) Defederating means that users of instance A cannot interact with the content or users of instance B, if instance A defederated instance B.

Since the performance of website is dependent on the instance you use, you can try to find another instance with less users and a more stable server. As long as it is not defederated by many other servers it will be effectively be the same experience as being on another instance.

blindjezebel ,

Could I think of the federation as like nations giving each others’ citizens a visa, or is that too off the mark to use as a metaphor?

rikudou ,

I think it’s too far off. It’s more like countries joining European Union - they are still individual countries, but they share stuff with all other countries that are part of the union/federation.

dot20 ,

I think it kinda works, but it misses the mark in that you don’t need to ‘travel’ to another server to see the communities and posts from that server.

It’s more like every instance is a post office, and when you make a post or comment at your local post office, they also send it out to a bunch of other post offices. So when you rock up to your local post office (instance), you can see all the activity at that post office, but also all the activity that has come in from federated post offices.

To The Moon

Firstly, it’s fairly short, which I appreciate in a game that’s primarily story-driven. Secondly, the story is damn near perfect. When I got to the reveal towards the end I actually sobbed (quietly, in a manly way). No other game has ever affected me that way.

@INeedMana@lemmy.world avatar

I looked through the webpage and github repo but still don’t understand. What is the purpose of Proton-Qt? Lutris and Steam have their “which version to use” settings. What does this tool add?

c0mbatbag3l OP ,
@c0mbatbag3l@lemmy.world avatar

To my knowledge it’s how you install the proton compatibility layer. That doesn’t just come with steam, right? You’re just telling the game which version to attempt to use, right?

juipeltje ,
@juipeltje@lemmy.world avatar

Steam has a list of proton versions to choose from in the compatibility settings of the game. When you select one it downloads it automatically. You should only have to download a proton version manually if you want to use the Glorious Eggroll versions, or if you really need a specific version that steam doesn’t list, at least as far as i’m aware.
