Game Boy tetris has always been my favorite version. Check out the Rosy Retrospection romhack for the GB game with some nice quality-of-life improvements.
Yo, a couple years ago I had become fed up with the state of the modern Internet, and I started looking for alternatives. This is what I have found so far:
Gopher protocol (sdf.org is pretty active)
Gemini protocol (Modern version of gopher)
Shared UNIX systems (also called tildes) sdf.org is great!
RSS
IRC/Matrix to chat with people
Session messenger to chat with family
BBSes via syncterm
wiby.me and marginalia.nu search engines to find personal web sites
oldavista.com to browse the 'Old Net’
Web forums
Neocities
Webrings (They still exist!)
Lemmy (This is a new one)
The next step for me will be to build my own personal site. The only way to keep the independent web alive is to participate in it.
Hey, this is great. Thank you. I have actually just created a community here !oldweb if anyone is interested. Just a place to share these sorts of sites and lists etc.

librewolf on the desktop. works for me. Came from vivaldi, which is too big for my old laptop setup (takes ages to load). Using fennec on android. But, recently i needed a browser for android which allows a bookmark.html file to be imported (camera froze with sync) and couldn't find one. everything today MUST go over the sync (cloud).
If your laptop is on the potato side I would personally avoid kde, it’s much lighter now than it used to be but still heavier than other options. Mint looks good in my personal opinion and, again in my opinion, is a better alternative if compared to ubuntu, it’s based on it but with some improvements. The default flavor comes with cinnamon, but if your laptop struggles it’s also available with xfce, which even older machines should be able to handle.
@raccoon@Triage8420@linux_gaming
I put xfce on a garbage laptop for my parents (who are used to much older windows) and they loved it, the laptop ended up breaking eventually but that was a hardware issue and they regularly ask me when I'll be able to replace it
Welcome. Sure, Linux Mint’s WebApp Manager or Peppermint OS’s Ice are here for you. But jokes aside, sadly, no. Lemmy does not have a native Linux application as of now. But you can make use of the fact that the browser UI is a PWA which can be installed like a regular app as well.
Proper PWA support isn’t in v0.17.3 (although mobile browsers will let you add it as an app). However, PWA support was merged into the main branch. I’m not sure which release it will be a part of though.
I’ve encountered some people who are not so… respectful with disagreements. I’ve made use of the report feature, however, it doesn’t seem to be of much use.
Have a look at Neocities (a successor to Geocities). My website is here.
You can also have a look at the rest of the Fediverse. There are some cool accounts on Mastodon and PeerTube.
For that true “old web” thing, have you ever heard of gemini? Take a look. My capsule on gemini is here, but you will need a gemini browser in order to see it.
I wouldn’t personally use chatGPT ,or any language model for that matter, if factual information is the goal.
DDG has been my go-to recently, but mostly because I’m jaded with current year data harvesting and such. The internet feels like such a hassle these days .-.
@natebluehooves@dl007, to find what I search I use mostly these search engines with AI without BigBrother company spyware, is in these where AI is usefull because "de-hazzle" the internet with direct answers based on reliable resources, ChatGPT can't do this, it has a knowledge base from 2021 and can't give reliable and up-to-date answers because of this.
None of the search engines is perfect, all of them have pros and flaws, because of this, if you need a deeper research it is inevitable to have several on hand.
Anyone else using Kagi.com for search? I’m using it as a paid user and it’s fantastic, no ads and no tracking and results are great. I use ChatGPT for “ideas” and Kagi for specifics.
It’s really weird. There’s so few people here, but the conversations are really good. Everyone is friendly and the place is growing. That’s a really great vibe.
Sadly i checked in on the Apollo sub and there’s a lot of hate on there for Lemmy. Not sure if people fully understand it or they are just fighting the inevitable change that is coming lol. But it def. reminds me of the digg meltdown and how people were hellbent that reddit sucked and wouldn’t last and was too difficult to use… lol change is hard sometimes but it’s life.
The complaints are all over the place so likely coming from people that either A.) haven’t actually used Lemmy. B.) Used it for .5 seconds got confused and gave up. C.) Are just afraid of change and just wanna stick their heads in the sand…
But most of them center around how difficult lemmy is to use and how “communities are way too overbearing with the rules.” , that it uses the new.reddit UI, and that it’s run by a bunch of “tankies”
What’s a tankie? My biggest concern is the fragmentation of communities due to multiple servers, so the numbers in any one server will always be smaller.
they’re complaining about us lemmygrad users, but we aren’t even the biggest instance anymore + the 2 recommended instances block us anyways so it’s a worthless complaint now
I don’t use Google very often anymore, more of a DuckDuckGo fan. However using ChatGPT has become my goto for quick howto stuff. A lot of web searches will load clickbait articles or dead end forums. Using GPT I often get a strait forward guide built for exactly what I need.
it’s amazing how much the web is full of clickbait and fake sites trying to just capture search result traffic. ironically, ChatGPT seems to make it even easier to make sites like that. 😭
I’m trying to understand this community and posts there like “how to disprove the lies about the DPRK?” To me, the most telling thing about these pro-North Korea communities is that there are no North Koreans within them 🙃
