Adda , to linux in Lemmy GUI app for linux?
@Adda@lemmy.ml avatar

Welcome. Sure, Linux Mint’s WebApp Manager or Peppermint OS’s Ice are here for you. But jokes aside, sadly, no. Lemmy does not have a native Linux application as of now. But you can make use of the fact that the browser UI is a PWA which can be installed like a regular app as well.

CannotSleep420 ,

Proper PWA support isn’t in v0.17.3 (although mobile browsers will let you add it as an app). However, PWA support was merged into the main branch. I’m not sure which release it will be a part of though.

hellfire103 , to asklemmy in Where's the feel of the old Internet gone, and what sites do you use?
@hellfire103@sopuli.xyz avatar

Have a look at Neocities (a successor to Geocities). My website is here.

You can also have a look at the rest of the Fediverse. There are some cool accounts on Mastodon and PeerTube.

For that true “old web” thing, have you ever heard of gemini? Take a look. My capsule on gemini is here, but you will need a gemini browser in order to see it.

Hope this helps!

calcifer ,

But does neocities have neopets?

natebluehooves , to technology in 👋 Have you stopped using Google much because of ChatGPT/Bing ?👀

I wouldn’t personally use chatGPT ,or any language model for that matter, if factual information is the goal.

DDG has been my go-to recently, but mostly because I’m jaded with current year data harvesting and such. The internet feels like such a hassle these days .-.

Catweazle ,
@Catweazle@vivaldi.net avatar

@natebluehooves @dl007, to find what I search I use mostly these search engines with AI without BigBrother company spyware, is in these where AI is usefull because "de-hazzle" the internet with direct answers based on reliable resources, ChatGPT can't do this, it has a knowledge base from 2021 and can't give reliable and up-to-date answers because of this.

@Icarus, special for codes is Phind, a AI search engine for devs

None of the search engines is perfect, all of them have pros and flaws, because of this, if you need a deeper research it is inevitable to have several on hand.

Anyone else using Kagi.com for search? I’m using it as a paid user and it’s fantastic, no ads and no tracking and results are great. I use ChatGPT for “ideas” and Kagi for specifics.

Sadly i checked in on the Apollo sub and there’s a lot of hate on there for Lemmy. Not sure if people fully understand it or they are just fighting the inevitable change that is coming lol. But it def. reminds me of the digg meltdown and how people were hellbent that reddit sucked and wouldn’t last and was too difficult to use… lol change is hard sometimes but it’s life.

klemptor ,

What are their complaints about lemmy?

wicked82 ,
@wicked82@midwest.social avatar

The complaints are all over the place so likely coming from people that either A.) haven’t actually used Lemmy. B.) Used it for .5 seconds got confused and gave up. C.) Are just afraid of change and just wanna stick their heads in the sand…

But most of them center around how difficult lemmy is to use and how “communities are way too overbearing with the rules.” , that it uses the new.reddit UI, and that it’s run by a bunch of “tankies”

raj ,

What’s a tankie? My biggest concern is the fragmentation of communities due to multiple servers, so the numbers in any one server will always be smaller.

ImOnADiet ,
@ImOnADiet@lemmygrad.ml avatar

I don’t use Google very often anymore, more of a DuckDuckGo fan. However using ChatGPT has become my goto for quick howto stuff. A lot of web searches will load clickbait articles or dead end forums. Using GPT I often get a strait forward guide built for exactly what I need.

sotimely ,
@sotimely@lemmygrad.ml avatar

it’s amazing how much the web is full of clickbait and fake sites trying to just capture search result traffic. ironically, ChatGPT seems to make it even easier to make sites like that. 😭

For anyone who doesn’t know; Helix is an editor with vim like keybindings with more out of the box functionality than vim.

LemmyPistolero OP ,

the app constantly says connection errors saying the network is blocking it but it isn’t

shreddy_scientist ,
@shreddy_scientist@lemmy.ml avatar

I’d bet its a kill switch issue, if not it could be related to an antivirus, proxy or firewall setting.

LemmyPistolero OP ,

shreddy_scientist ,
@shreddy_scientist@lemmy.ml avatar

I don’t use stock but I also use fedora, I had issues with the kill switch. There’s two different kill switch options, my setup works much better with the simpler of the two. Also, I want to say fedora comes with the firewall enabled, plays into it being well ranked from a privacy standpoint I believe

LemmyPistolero OP ,

LemmyPistolero OP ,

I’ve tried already, currently in the US

shreddy_scientist ,
@shreddy_scientist@lemmy.ml avatar

What about changing up the protocol and shield options?

LemmyPistolero OP ,

there is no options for these on linux

shreddy_scientist ,
@shreddy_scientist@lemmy.ml avatar

That could be your issue, go to: settings -> connections -> select the VPN your connecting to -> VPN (openvpn) tab -> advanced -> general tab -> check use TCP connection

If the issue continues, definitely check the other advanced settings for sure. If you still have an issue I’d hit up Proton using protonvpn.com/support-form

Edit: Shield options are directly next to the kill switch icon under connect/disconnect as well

hfkldjbuq , to programming in International auxiliary languages should be utilized in software development (to improve international collaboration).

Is there any scientific evidence Esperantano is more efficient, has significantly superior user experience/usability? What about that in the context of using it for software engineering? People seem to have developed it in the 1800s; so outdated. Also many issues en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Esperanto#Criticism like bias and the gender non-neutrality; I would discard it. I would suggest to come up with a better language for the 21st century. This one seems better www.globasa.net/eng

Also, isn’t this an XY problem? The problem is that many people do not know the current dominant language that people use in science, technology, so on. So you propose Esperanto. Well, now you gatekeep it to people who know Esperanto, which is a way less demography than English. But since learning languages that are more close to one’s native language is easier, that would allow people from Latin/Roamance/Germanic-based languages to possibly learn it faster? That would not be true to Asiatic languages, …

Why another language is the correct solution? Why not improve current education systems? Why not machine translation? Why not improve translations? If the US switches its official language to Esperanto, wouldn’t it be imperialist as well? Language dominance is linked to socioeconomic development. You need countries like US to actually adopt it; otherwise it would be just another language to learn besides English. You are just making it harder.

pingveno ,

If the US switches its official language to Esperanto, wouldn’t it be imperialist as well?

The idea behind a language like Esperanto isn’t necessarily that any one country uses it as their primary language. It’s that it can be rapidly learned as a second language (or in parallel with a primary language) and spoken with just about anyone.

Faresh , to asklemmy in in what degree different ideas are accepted in lemmy ?

I don’t know what you mean? If I am the admin of an instance or the moderator of a group, I could delete comments or is this just not possible?

Federating with only approved finstances (federated instance)?

Why doing this? Wouldn’t it be enough to block the illegal instances and those who are explicitly against your topics?

What if you keep your blog, then push every post you make there to your solo-community on a finstance? You can engineer your comment section on the blog to pint here or fetch the comments content from fediverse to your blog…

I am trying to be as green as possible. Having a blog on one server and the comments on another sounds like an inefficient way of using resources. Why not just put the articles where the comments are?

With Mastodon I had the same idea, that I will publish an article, post a link with short description on Mastodon and then use the Mastodon post as the comment section, then edit the blog article and put the link to Mastodon on the end of the article with a simple text link like “Comment section”.

But even this idea felt a bit odd and more unprofessional.

Lemmy looks like a really good solution to this atm.
