The government is looking out for your best interests

argv_minus_one ,

It will if everyone votes for politicians willing to do so. We get the government we vote for.

slugbones ,
@slugbones@lemmy.ml avatar

“Go Vote!” Rings more and more hollow every day we have watch the country crumble. I am begging you to think outside the box of electoral politics because it is where dreams go to die.

Nobody voted to put kids to work at meatpacking plants and we will almost assuredly not be allowed to vote on a solution but there are children suffering dangerous jobs right now. The capitalists that run the country do not care about your votes they care about profits and they have so many more resources than us to tip things in their favor.

Voting has not and never will be enough. It is literally the bare minimum you can do and you should not pat yourself on the back for it.

CannotSleep420 ,

Bourgeois democracy, although a great historical advance in comparison with medievalism, always remains, and under capitalism is bound to remain, restricted, truncated, false and hypocritical, a paradise for the rich and a snare and deception for the exploited, for the poor.

aceospos , to lemmy in What's happens if, like mastodon and matrix, 99% of ppl only use the handful of the biggest Lemmy servers?

I think it's almost inevitable that users in their initial migration will troop to the more visible aka biggest instances. In time it should level off and people join a handful of the bigger federating instances

branchial ,

Why would it level off? The bigger instances will always be more visible and therefore generate more users and content right? Why would that change?

nutomic ,
@nutomic@lemmy.ml avatar

There were some suggestions to change the order of instances on join-lemmy.org so that smaller instances are shown near the top. So that could help to spread out users better.

CannotSleep420 ,

Perhaps a couple of random instances can be picked out every day/week to be featured?

I know you mean satiric as satire but I sort of read it as “sarcastic” which fits with your reply, lol. A weasel that is ineffective on the internet, because satire is dead.

InstantWeasel ,

THAT weasel might be ineffective, but not me 😈

(I Know, answering 2 days later kinda defeats the purpose of my name… Mine is an obscure and regional reference, so i wouldn’t be mad if you don’t get it.)

alex , to asklemmy in Users from before the current wave of Reddit refugees, how do you feel about the incoming monsoon of refugees?

Well:

  • I’m annoyed at calling people who dislike an app and choose another website "refugees"
  • I’m happy that we’re going to have more activity
  • I hope more instances will be built and maintained, because I don’t think the large number of new members can be moderated effectively if they keep flocking to the same handful of instances
  • When in doubt, I hope moderators will be too strict rather than not enough, especially in the beginning to make sure the behavioural expectations are very clear

Not op but I’m using DDG since many years and I feel like is continuously improving.

In case you miss google or you need a different search you can simply add !g to the search and search on google from DDG (it opens a google page)

An account on a given instance only lets you log on to that instance. You can use that account to interact with people from other instances, however.

Borgzilla , to asklemmy in Where's the feel of the old Internet gone, and what sites do you use?
@Borgzilla@lemmy.ca avatar

Yo, a couple years ago I had become fed up with the state of the modern Internet, and I started looking for alternatives. This is what I have found so far:

  • Gopher protocol (sdf.org is pretty active)
  • Gemini protocol (Modern version of gopher)
  • Shared UNIX systems (also called tildes) sdf.org is great!
  • RSS
  • IRC/Matrix to chat with people
  • Session messenger to chat with family
  • BBSes via syncterm
  • wiby.me and marginalia.nu search engines to find personal web sites
  • oldavista.com to browse the 'Old Net’
  • Web forums
  • Neocities
  • Webrings (They still exist!)
  • Lemmy (This is a new one)

The next step for me will be to build my own personal site. The only way to keep the independent web alive is to participate in it.

Xer0 OP ,

librewolf on the desktop. works for me. Came from vivaldi, which is too big for my old laptop setup (takes ages to load). Using fennec on android. But, recently i needed a browser for android which allows a bookmark.html file to be imported (camera froze with sync) and couldn't find one. everything today MUST go over the sync (cloud).

dessalines ,

Same for me, but I’ve started using fulguris on android. I think it just uses the android webrenderer unfortunately, but it is open source.

If your laptop is on the potato side I would personally avoid kde, it’s much lighter now than it used to be but still heavier than other options. Mint looks good in my personal opinion and, again in my opinion, is a better alternative if compared to ubuntu, it’s based on it but with some improvements. The default flavor comes with cinnamon, but if your laptop struggles it’s also available with xfce, which even older machines should be able to handle.

I put xfce on a garbage laptop for my parents (who are used to much older windows) and they loved it, the laptop ended up breaking eventually but that was a hardware issue and they regularly ask me when I'll be able to replace it

Adda , to linux in Lemmy GUI app for linux?
@Adda@lemmy.ml avatar

Welcome. Sure, Linux Mint’s WebApp Manager or Peppermint OS’s Ice are here for you. But jokes aside, sadly, no. Lemmy does not have a native Linux application as of now. But you can make use of the fact that the browser UI is a PWA which can be installed like a regular app as well.

CannotSleep420 ,

Proper PWA support isn’t in v0.17.3 (although mobile browsers will let you add it as an app). However, PWA support was merged into the main branch. I’m not sure which release it will be a part of though.

Have a look at Neocities (a successor to Geocities). My website is here.

You can also have a look at the rest of the Fediverse. There are some cool accounts on Mastodon and PeerTube.

For that true “old web” thing, have you ever heard of gemini? Take a look. My capsule on gemini is here, but you will need a gemini browser in order to see it.

Hope this helps!

natebluehooves , to technology in 👋 Have you stopped using Google much because of ChatGPT/Bing ?👀

I wouldn’t personally use chatGPT ,or any language model for that matter, if factual information is the goal.

@natebluehooves @dl007, to find what I search I use mostly these search engines with AI without BigBrother company spyware, is in these where AI is usefull because "de-hazzle" the internet with direct answers based on reliable resources, ChatGPT can't do this, it has a knowledge base from 2021 and can't give reliable and up-to-date answers because of this.

None of the search engines is perfect, all of them have pros and flaws, because of this, if you need a deeper research it is inevitable to have several on hand.
