uin , to sysadmin in Tool for Monitoring Bandwidth in Real Time

So you want the available bandwidth to be monitored in “real time”, but you don’t want constant speed tests to happen. Then you mention a script doing a speed test.

You’re gonna have to choose: Either you run some kind of Speedtest on a regular basis, which will give you somewhat “real-time” results, or you don’t do it, and you don’t have real-time data as a result.

A very quick google search brought up this power shell script, that even formats the results for PRTG:

github.com/greiginsydney/New-OoklaSpeedTest.ps1

Yeah, I am a bit scatter brained today…lol. I am not sure what I want, but I will check out that github and see what I can do with that. Thank you!

pete ,

So, a speed test can show bandwidth but so can a graph, when you see the flat line, you’ve hit your limit.

Use interface counter graphs to map out b/s and then you’ll be able to see where you’re actually maxing out. If you’ve hit a bandwidth limit on a connection but your graph is still spiky it’s not you it’s them.

uin ,

But if he wanted that historical data for, say, making sure an ISP delivers promised bandwidth, then unless he’s constantly maxing out the connection, the usage graph is going to be fairly useless.

pete ,

Yes, but doing a speed test while you’re using the link isn’t an accurate test, so it’s extremely difficult to be able to show bandwidth issues with anything other than a graph. If the ISP is not giving you your full bandwidth, you’ll flatline below the full bandwidth on the graph. If you are using half your link and do a speed test you will only get results for about half your link unless you drop all other traffic to do the speed test.

I won a small victory in Sainsbury’s today. There were no checkouts open and a gaggle of shop assistants just standing around chatting. I dislike using the self service so I stood by a checkout and glared meaningfully at the assistants until one backed down and opened the checkout.

That’s pretty awesome of him to actually admit he was in the wrong and apologize instead of doubling down.

I think that’s a lot about personal preference. Do you enjoy your machine? That you can’t repair it? That you can’t easily take your OS with you one to a machine from another manufacture? Maybe you don’t care. I do. I think Linux gives you a lot of freedom, but if you don’t need or want it, I don’t think there is a reason to change. I mean, apart from the whole Apple-being-a-big-coorporation-that-actively-hinders-reparability issue that one might care about from a societal and environmental perspective.

Maybe you could get all the same stuff you need for development in Linux, and a lot more freedom to boot.

I apologize that this comes off a bit hostile. I am a bit hostile. I am also sorry for it!

Imagine the scene where Fry is in his 20th century apartment, and having to explain to your children that you absolutely lived like that.

His apartment isn’t too archaic lol, my first apartment like 3 years ago was actually pretty similar. The only difference was that I didn’t have a CRT tv lol.

jhoward , to futurama in Do you think younger generations will enjoy Futurama (both new/upcoming episodes and older content)?

My 10 year old daughter has been rewatching it for years. She found a role model in Leela and a name for her cat in Fry.

As for the references and jokes, yea many go over her head. But as time progresses, fewer and fewer. And she often asks about stuff she doesn’t understand.

Even without a complete understanding of the jokes and references, she absolutely adores the show. And is asking on a daily basis if the new episodes are out yet.

Aurailious , to selfhosted in Self hosted services with SSL cert

If you use Let’s Encrypt, or any public CA, all of your domains and certificates will be public. You can use a wildcard to avoid revealing subdomains. There is a website that you can use to search what is available, but I don’t remember what it is.

I suspect there aren’t any serious risks to having that information revealed. The only real reason would be privacy against which services you are using on that domain.

phi ,

yeah true but if the DNS records aren’t actually pointing anywhere then there’s no real threat no? because everything stays in the internal network
