@Hamartiogonic@sopuli.xyz avatar

Depends on what you mean by “tech industry”. If FOSS projects are outside the realm of “tech industry”, then yes. The users and money would just go to FOSS instead of large well known companies, but the money would still go somewhere and development would happen somewhere.

gogosempai OP ,
@gogosempai@programming.dev avatar

Think of it this way. Billions of people use Windows. The OS itself is not free, and despite that it is ridiculed with trackers and adware for more profits. Operating system is a multi billion dollar industry. If everyone started using a free OS tomorrow that doesn’t even have ads, the OS industry just lost everything. Sure the dev cost for linux distros would rise because of new users but that’s it. For companies like MS, dev cost would only be a fraction of what they reap yearly, so that profit will get wiped out because people don’t pay for it anymore, not even with their data.

Another example is of Uber. Uber is another multi billion dollar company. Uber takes 30-50% commission on each ride. If everyone started using a FOSS alternative that just charged say 5% commission to just cover the dev and infra cost and reap no profits beyond that, the ride hailing industry just lost billions.

  • The render distance (observable universe)
  • The pixel size (Planck units)
  • And the update rate (‘speed of light’ = speed of information being updated)
bionicjoey ,

Calling Planck units “pixels” is extremely reductive. This is just naively applying video game concepts to physics with a poor understanding of both.

BrerChicken ,

I took an entire graduate course in QM and a quantized Universe does, in fact, seem pixelated. That’s exactly how I explain it to people. There’s simply a finite level to how closely you can zoom in.

Matte ,

isn’t the most recent explanation on planck’s length saying that we simply can’t observe further down, but it is hypothesised that smaller lengths actually exist?

Djeikup ,

Just searched a bit, looking into how the length came to be and found this from wikipedia. https://simple.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Planck_length“The Planck length does not have any precise physical significance, and it is a common misconception that it is the inherent pixel size of the universe.” What I found elsewhere was that it’s the only length one can get out of the universal constans of G, c and h. So as far as I know with my limited know how is that the planck length is useful or more convenient than other lengths in quantum physics.

Space, time, and energy are all quantized, and maybe even gravity though we haven’t figured that one out yet.

bionicjoey ,

A finite level to how close you can zoom in is very different from pixels. Pixels (or voxels in this case) are indivisible elements of a larger whole that exist along an evenly spaced grid. The universe doesn’t have a Cartesian coordinate system measured in Planck lengths

BrerChicken ,

That’s exactly what a Planck unit of spacetime is. And yes, the Universe–like a screen–is divided into an evenly-spaced grid any time you choose a coordinate system.

Pilots keep their logbook in decimal hours, and the tach meter (engine hours at a certain speed) and Hobbs meter (aircraft operated hours) are decimal too.

Each decimal hour (0.1) is equal to 6 minutes. So if I ‘fly’ for 1 hour and 13 minutes I log 1.2 hours. I don’t do the mental math though, I just record what the Hobbs says.

I just want to share my positive experience with Folder Sync.

I use Obsidian for journaling and note-taking, and unless you use the paid plan it doesn’t have native sync across multiple devices. I have the root folder of my notes stored in Google Drive and use Folder Sync to sync my PC/laptop with my mobile. Very useful as I’m out in the field often and like to jot down quick notes on my phone.

10/10 it just works.

ThatGuyFromWork ,

Folder Sync is great. Have been using it since 2017 to auto backup my phone to a home server I have setup. This means that if I replace my phone or it gets stolen, nothing is lost. Granted, nowadays I am finding less and less use for it with most apps backing up their data to the cloud but for photos/videos, it is great to have a local backup

A few of mine :

  • AndOTP : A good app for OTP that actually let’s you backup your keys and move them easily and securely to a new phone
  • Blokada : A system wide adblocker for Android. 4000000 ads blocked so far on my phone
  • YouTube Vanced: Not really a “hidden” gem but a cool app nonetheless. I wish people knew you could get an ad free YouTube experience on mobile. It also includes sponsor block so you really get straight to content. Also let’s you get a YT popup player and shutdown the screen with the video still playing.
  • F-Droid an Android open source app market. Often includes apps that are not allowed on Google market.

AndOTP is no longer maintained. I’d suggest switching to something still supported, like Aegis for example.

dekatron ,

+1 for F-Droid. I always prefer open-source alternatives from there over ad-infested bloatware which the Play Store has a lot of.

Plus, there are some really good F-Droid apps too, like Droid-ify (F-Droid client with smoother UI) and Obtainium (update apps automatically from a GitHub link).

    For me

    1. MiXplorer (Mix) : Clean and powerful file manager at the same time. It’s easy to use for normal user and very powerful for power users.
    2. Lookup Pro: Floating dictionary that can blend in to native Android context menu when highlighting words. It’s similar to iOS lookup or Kindle lookup feature.
    3. Maosure: Google virtual measure app that make use of ARCore library.
    4. Moon+ Reader Pro: favorite ebook reader
    5. Seal: Favorite youtube downloader. Unlike other YT downloader that is riddled with Ads, it FOSS app.
    6. Toolwiz Photos: Best all in one photo editor for me. It’s very underrated. The variety of feature it pack is u match by any photo editing apps for me. From color correction to healing and cloning tools, the fun feature that gets old very fast like face rater, face swap, pip, etc. I just noticed that it has AI painting feature too.
    7. TTS Server : Azure/Ms Edge TTS ported to Android to use it as system wide TTS. It’s the most natural free TTS I’ve ever used. It’s originally Chinese only app, but I forgot where I got English version from.
    cy4n ,

MiXplorer is genuinely the best file manager I ever used, has basically everything but keeps being easy to use. and it has theme support!
