Is this a Black Mirror episode or something?

HeavyRaptor ,

We just had a vote for government officials along the EP vote. Less than 60% turned up which means the most common vote was a vote for nothing. The average voter doesn’t care.

HeavyRaptor ,

It’s okay. I played Borderlands 3 with voices off, only sfx/background sounds/music. I’m sure I can do the same with this. Maybe turn picture off too while I’m at it.

HeavyRaptor ,

Let’s hope it isn’t. Even though civ 6 had multiple interesting aspects and in certain ways it was objectively better than 5, I just could not look past the ugly presentation.

HeavyRaptor ,

I recently switched over my ARR stack to only use usenet. Working well now but you really need a good indexer. The public ones are just not quite good enough.

HeavyRaptor ,

My Brother in Christ, WTF is a sCiEnCe?

Is this a US thing? Does it cover the entirety of chemistry, biology and physics (and maybe maths or geography)?

HeavyRaptor ,

There is definitely a buzz, the SPT (single player Tarkov mod) servers have been constantly overloaded for days now

HeavyRaptor ,

Is there?

HeavyRaptor ,

Apparently there is! There is a mod for SPT called MPT (now renamed to fika). It has a github but the download is only available through their discord. Took me a while to find it. Gonna see if we can get it working tomorrow.

HeavyRaptor ,

I lost faith in the verge after how they handled the whole PC build fiasco

HeavyRaptor ,

Would you even be able to move it? You’d have to put it in neutral first so you can attempt to push it but good luck with that if it’s bricked. I know electric cars generally shouldn’t really be towed either (a few meters might be okay but I’m not sure).

HeavyRaptor ,

I’m still looking for something to replace my shield TV tube. I don’t believe that has AV1 support.

Games that still need more patience: what games released a year ago (or older) are you waiting for a sale on? Or that need another patch?

Other than a slew of Nintendo titles that maybe hopefully will come down in price (the patient gamers’ bane), I have my eye on the next time Divinity: Original Sin 2 goes on sale. A friend who never plays anything other than WoW loved playing Larian’s newest with me and I’m trying to get her to pick this up. Pretty sure...

HeavyRaptor ,

Helldivers. $40 is a bit spicy for my friend group. We don’t have a good enough track record to keep playing a game to justify full price.

HeavyRaptor ,

Features out the wazoo and an insane amount of customisation available to the user via Goodlock, but also some quirks.

Here are my highlights: limit charge to 80% to conserve battery health; custom shortcuts when dragging from the side of the phone based on the angle of your swipe; not sure what app just woke the screen or sent a notification that disappeared? You can get a log of all of these activities; add a dedicated 2x crop button to the camera app; send audio from different apps to different sound outputs simultaneously; a whole stack of s-pen features ranging from useful to very niche (quick lock screen note, screen crop, use pen as camera shutter); and many more.

There are some annoyances also: you can’t have an infinite scrolling app drawer, it has to have pages; using icon packs from the play store is annoying and the Samsung theme store sucks.

Overall I like one UI 6 but there is always some room for improvement.

HeavyRaptor ,

Low key I’ve been checking in on Fallout London every now and then. I have no expectations, as these projects seem to fail most of the time before thay can even release, but if they actually manage to finish it, I’ll definitely play it. Another one in keeping on my radar is Morrowind in Skyrim, that one is in a much earlier stage though.

HeavyRaptor ,

Who knows, maybe now Chat GPT will blabber about for an extra three paragraphs before getting to the point and then give you bullshit info like many of the YouTubers.

Chat GPT, how do I change a light bulb?

Hey, what’s up, fam? Welcome back to my channel! Today, I’m going to show you how to change a light bulb, but first, let me tell you about this crazy party I went to last weekend. It was insane! I mean, the DJ was dropping beats like nobody’s business, and the dance floor was on fire!

But back to business. You know, changing a light bulb might seem like a simple task, but trust me, it’s all about the technique. Before we dive into that, though, let me share with you my latest fashion haul. I just scored these killer new sneakers that are going to take my style game to the next level!

Changing a light bulb is like changing your mindset, you know? It’s all about embracing the light and letting go of the darkness. Deep stuff, I know. But hey, that’s just how I roll.

Okay, back to the light bulb situation. So, you’re gonna need a ladder for this. Or maybe a chair if you’re feeling adventurous. I mean, who needs a ladder, am I right? Safety first, who needs it?

Next, you gotta unscrew the old bulb. But be careful, 'cause sometimes those suckers can be stubborn. If it doesn’t come out easily, just give it a good yank. What’s the worst that could happen, right?

Now, grab your new bulb and… umm… just stick it in there, I guess? I mean, it’s not rocket science. Oh, and make sure the power’s still on while you’re doing this. Adds a little excitement to the process, you know?

And that’s it! You’ve successfully changed a light bulb. Or at least, I hope you have. If not, well, there’s always candles, right? Anyway, thanks for watching, don’t forget to like, subscribe, and share this video with your friends. Catch you on the flip side!

In addition to what others said about weight, training, the logistics of moving that many people at once, and other common sense problems; the most times (~80%) something goes wrong with airplanes is during takeoff or landing where you couldn’t feasably safely jump out of the plane anyway reducing their effectiveness even further.

HeavyRaptor ,

The paradox holds in an infinitely dividable setting. Take the series of numbers where the next number equals the previous one divided by 2: {1, 1/2, 1/4, 1/8, 1/16…}. If you take the sum of this infinite series (there is always a larger factor of two to divide by) you are going to get a finite result (namely 2, in this instance). So for the real life example, while there is always another ‘half’ of the distance to be travelled, the time it takes to do so is also halved with every iteration.

HeavyRaptor ,

So this wasn’t exactly retaliation. The first approval epic got this year was from an automated system. Once they got the approval they assumed (very understandably) that apple was okay with them establishing their store within the new guidelines, so they announced their plans publicly. They also continued to diss apple on Twitter of course. Hearing the announcement, Apple execs decided to ban them again because they didn’t adhere to the rules last time.

This however completely looked like retaliation from apple’s side, so the DMA lawyers started an investigation and Apple had to re-allow epic again.

Wether it’s apple’s fault for having the shitty automated system or not, doesn’t really matter though. I just hope we get proper sideloading by the end of the process.

HeavyRaptor ,

You can use pixel search as a widget for play store search if you like

HeavyRaptor ,

Does this include Candy Crush an mobile gaming in general? I’d say that people who play something on their phone every now and then won’t be foaming from their mouths because of something like this. Then again, they don’t buy the games that we’re talking about here so that’s why I’m asking (I checked your link but couldn’t find this info)

HeavyRaptor ,

I could kinda see them designing a chip maybe but that’s not what they are saying. Many companies have their own chip by going to AMD for example and using their designs and process nodes to create something more use-case specific. For example the steam deck’s soc is a custom design madefor Valve. Or as you said it is possible to licence and customise designs from Arm to create your own custom SOC. This is what smartphone manufacturers do. Then they take their designs to a foundry like TSMC to create actual chips out of them.

But I don’t think that’s what openai is aiming for here, they want their own foundry. They themselves want to design and produce the chips.

Not even considering the actual design of the chips, just being able to mass produce something on the scale of modern transistors with economical yields is an insane task.

On some of the newest nodes, one aspect of lythography (the process of marking out transistors with a directed light) involves creating a micro-drop of certain molten metals. While the drop is falling, it is hit by a low power laser to change its shape to a ‘pancake’ like form. After this it is hit by a more powerful laser that vaporises the drop, crating a very specific wavelength of light. This light is then focused into an extremely sharp laser that marks out the transistor patterns on the target silicon. The process happens thousands of times a second.

Of course you can’t just buy one of these machines on Amazon. Each company guards their newest process nodes with the utmost secrecy, as developing a new node can cost billions of dollars, not even mentioning what it costs to build, outfit, and run an actual foundry itself.

This is one machine that is part of the complex process that is making microchips. Nvidia doesn’t even have their own foundry, they have been relying on Samsung and TSMC recently.

Asking for trillions of dollars to build something from scratch is just so unbelievably silly. Almost as silly as someone actually giving it to them.

HeavyRaptor ,

Let’s be honest here, 4k never made any sense on a smartphone. It was just a way to sell it to people who had no idea. It actually might be straight up worse than 1440p because it draws more power.

With that, I always wanted one of those 5 phones but they are just a bit too pricy for what you get. Getting an s23 ultra was cheaper than the 5iv at the time (that’s for 256 GB on the Samsung and 128 on the Sony btw).

The 5iv also had the snapdragon 8gen1 which was plagued by overheating and bad battery life according to reviews. I like the Sony phones in theory but they have to take a more critical look at their position in the market.

It doesn’t help that their hardware releases take so long all the other companies move on to next year’s SOCs by the time they release. Not sure when the 1vi will release so at the moment the 1v is still on the 8gen2 for example. You might say it doesn’t really matter at this point, these are all great chips, but when you’re paying a premium over other flagships it feels bad to get last years outdated hardware.

HeavyRaptor ,

Linking to the actual test so you don’t have to visit the verge.

What is interesting to me that many failed on the driver monitoring side which to me as a consumer (not a traffic authority) is probably actually a pro not a con. I don’t want my car insessantly beeping at me for dumb reasons. I wouldn’t intend to use these systems without attention but stricter controls will also mean more false positives.

By this logic Lexus, Volvo, Nissan, Mercedes, and even Ford seem great (somewhat depending on the model of the car).

Whats also funny is that the Tesla utterly failed almost all categories except the lane change (and passed emergency). But it can’t even do that unless you’re willing to pay them extra thousands of dollars for the software unlock.

HeavyRaptor ,

Also some of these cars are from 2021. I imagine there can be a significant difference between these and newer models.

I wonder how Audi is doing. They had a level 3 car coming out a few years ago now. Haven’t heard of it since…

HeavyRaptor ,

That’s fine, I agree it makes the roads safer, but it won’t make me buy a car that screams at me

HeavyRaptor ,

I love seeing these two assholes fight.

I think this is good though. Another data point of Apple not allowing true competition on their platform. Oh, you want your own app store? BAM! You’re banned. Especially now that it seemed Epic was gonna comply with this last set of ridiculous rules.

We might get a proper way to sideload if they keep this up. We’ll see…

HeavyRaptor ,

I think it’s only third party appstores for now. That’s why I’m hoping this will encourage stricter regulation

HeavyRaptor ,

(without having watched it) Why are these videos always top 10 upcoming games and never top 10 games that just released last month?

I’d be much more interested in stuff that’s already out instead of hyping myself up for something that might come out and be terrible.

HeavyRaptor ,

That’s cool that you’re looking forward to it. It’s nice to have something to be excited for. I guess I’ve just been burned one too many times to give in to the hype again.

I’m not even really talking about this video specifically, just that these type of videos are usually hyping stuff up, getting clicks, and in the end the games are often a letdown.

HeavyRaptor ,

Sounds good, but other metrics are also important, not just sequential reads. There could be some cool applications if price stays low and reliability is good enough for non-critical use. I’m always on the look for less pricy, high speed media storage. But readers would also have to be inexpensive in order to have multiple terabytes available of the stuff

HeavyRaptor ,

Almost feels like it’s more about kerning than actual character changes. Though I do prefer the symbols of calibri.

HeavyRaptor ,

Would the black version of the penis emoji be longer than the others? Would it be an erect or a flaccid penis? Why not both? Or better even, a full range of male excitement. The applications are endless!

(I’m joking of course but it does demonstrate the silly questions you would have to answer if you were to actually implement this)

HeavyRaptor ,

It’s really annoying. I was looking for a smart wearable with blood oxygen monitoring, and couldn’t find much useful info on reddit/Google so I asked bing chat. Instead of giving a useful answer it was parroting some bullshit about these gadgets not being medical devices. I know… if I wanted a medical device that’s what I would look for.

It’s always been the case where you can research information that is plain wrong or even intentionally misleading. You have to take a measured perception and decide whether the source is to be believed.

And I shouldn’t have to justify every query I make to the bloody computer. It’s not the AI’s job to give me a lecture about skewed ethics every time I have a technical question. We’re heading to a world where children will be raised by these answers and I think the constant caveats and safety nets do much more harm than help. Learning to be critical is much more important than learning to follow the forced ethics set by some corporate guidelines.

(got the Ticwatch 5 pro btw - no thanks to bing. It works amazing, wakes me up with sleep as android when I forget to put on my cpap mask)

HeavyRaptor ,

Not exactly sure what the server limits are but something like Valheim could work for a large group of people. It’s an open world sandbox so people can divide up and do whatever they want to on the same server (exploring, fighting, mining, building, farming, etc.) Not sure how far you can get in the game in 3 hours though…

Alternatively you could play some sort of team based shooter but there might be a stark skill difference in a competitive setting.

Apparently the star wars bf classic collection has a 32 player co-op mode vs ai which sounds amazing to me, but I’ve never tried it before

HeavyRaptor ,

I used to just buy a key from Kinguin or similar. It’s usually around 2-3 usd for an OEM key (only usable on 1 computer) and you can pay with PayPal. Never had issues yet.

Next time around I might try this activation script that was mentioned here though.

HeavyRaptor ,

This is awesome, do you know who made the original?

HeavyRaptor ,

How can the picture be real of your eyes aren’t real?

How can the picture be real if your eyes aren’t real?

HeavyRaptor ,

Are you watching this on a Nintendo DS or something?

Got an s23 ultra last year, I’m loving it. I don’t really know what the people here mean by bloat, you can uninstall almost everything you don’t want, and disable the rest of the apps right from the phone. ADB exists if you want to dive deeper but I haven’t found the need.

Loving the fast chip and crazy cameras, some of Samsung’s extensive software is actually useful, and one ui has more customisability than any other flavour I’ve tried before. Much of the customisation is hidden behind this this app called Goodlock that allows you to change pretty much anything on the os. For example you can hide the app names on the home screen or have different actions depending on the angle you drag the back gesture from the side (I have a down swipe set to a system wide search for example). It’s crazy in comparison that Google doesn’t even allow you to remove their dumb search bar from the home screen without changing to a different launcher.

Even so, there are some small idiosyncrasies that are annoying. You can’t have a vertical app drawer without changing launcher, it’s annoying to apply themes from the play store and not Samsung’s shitty theme store, and if you unlock your phone with your face you can’t still tap your finger afterwards to unlock, you have to swipe. Every platform has some of these, you gotta pick your poison here. Graphene os up until recently didn’t support android auto and I still don’t think you can use your phone for contactless payments. Not sure about play protect and banking apps, I’m sure others here can tell you.

I the end, I got the ultra for the camera hardware but I also really didn’t want to give Google any money. With Graphene os now having android auto I might have reconsidered but I’d have to do more research on what limitations Graphene has.

HeavyRaptor ,

Battery life is brilliant! I have my phone set to only charge to 85% to preserve battery health and the only times it runs out is next day when I forget to charge it overnight. The snapdragon 8gen2 is much more efficient than the gen1 the year before (and Google’s tensor chips). I was not happy with the price either. The S23 is 90% of the ultra for much less money. I ended up going with the ultra purely because I kinda disliked the shape/feel of the S23 in my hands and found a decent deal. But the s23 is much better value (same chip, still very good camera and screen) all you’re missing out is the 10x zoom and the S-pen, both of wich are nice to have but definitely situational.

  • Many different ships and upgrades to choose from (go war canoe)
  • Sword fighting
  • Wooing governor’s daughters (somewhat similar in gameplay to sword fighting)
  • (mediocre) stealth and land battles
  • Free your family from the grasp of Baron Raymondo (Evil!)
