Commod0re , to startrek in Best order to get into the show without having to watch everything?

to be perfectly honest, order doesn't really matter. There is a small amount of interplay between TNG and DS9 and that's about it. Watch it in whatever order fancies you, as long as you don't watch Enterprise first because it's high level of boredom might turn you off

Trust me when I say that if Trek strikes your fancy, you probably will want to devour the rest

personally I would suggest starting with TNG, that one definitely qualifies as the "most universally loved". Plus, if you liked Lower Decks, then TNG-era Trek is likely to be your jam anyway

after TNG, watch DS9 and Voyager in whatever order you want. They ran concurrently originally, with DS9 having started a couple years before Voyager. You can watch the TNG movies anytime after finishing TNG bearing in mind that First Contact has minor consequences in DS9 (you will mainly notice a uniform change that coincided with the release of that movie)

watch the TOS movies at some point! they are much easier to get into than TOS proper. Just bear in mind that the even numbered ones are generally better liked than the odd numbered ones.

Might be your usage of the API, but there's really no information you've provided that we could use to do anything other than guess.

Starting to wonder if they've decided to scrape user IDs from here and lemmy and compare to their own DB to try and scorch the earth.

abff08f4813c ,

I don't think the scraping is the full reason. I was not on lemmy/kbin or any other part of the fediverse and I still got this random permaban, in fact it happened before the pricing changes were announced on May 31st.

Also, my username there is different to what I'm using on the fediverse.

Prior to being permabanned I also never used the API for anything. Only used it for the scripts to wipe my account clean (so being permabanned doesn't typically prevent one from creating the API tokens or actually using the API, it seems).

dismalnow ,
@dismalnow@kbin.social avatar

Well that rules out (most) of the malicious possibilities. What we're left with is probably either Hanlon's razer, or something you commented about spez.

If it's the latter, the four accounts I nuked are still alive.

abff08f4813c ,

Sadly, it wasn't the later. I never mentioned spez and didn't even know what the CEO's name or username was until the blackouts (i.e. after i got permabanned).

VPN? They have this half-baked user "reliability" rating system that they claim "identifies known alts".

Which is marketingspeak for "we log ips," I think. If they did that as poorly as everything else, it's possible they think you're the last guy to use that vpn before you.

Also.. sorry for grilling you. Just curious.

FinalBoy1975 , to nostupidquestions in What other less-toxic system could work instead of karma?

Posts should just be upvoted and downvoted with no credit given to the person who posted. Same goes for comments. In my opinion, upvoting and downvoting should just help the user find the most relevant information. Content that people upvote is the most seen. Content that people downvote is the least seen. Posters and commenters stay on an equal footing with no points system.

HangoverTuesday ,

Maybe we could still have karma, but display it as a ratio of good:bad karma or something? Active user and most of your interactions get upvoted, green dot. New user or not active for a while? Gray dot. Established user and all your content gets downvoted all the time, red dot.

Get banned from 50+ subreddits? Your color dot gets changed to a picture of u/spez.

best idea I have heard thus far

HangoverTuesday ,

It provides other users with an at a glance idea of your reputation, without chasing a "high score". Could always rank users based on up/down votes, as I said, but limit the range so that as long as you've been active for a few months and aren't a douchebag, your score will be maxed out.

Dreamfall: The Longest Journey. After playing it for a while I couldn’t stop until I reached the end. It looks aged now but controls are generally nice and the story is amazing. And I think the character feels feminine, it’s not just a neutral character with a female skin.

Lowbird ,

That is a good game, agree. My one complaint is that there’re a few moments of drive-by transphobia in it. And some puzzles are obtuse or require items that can be missed, but a quick google solves that frustration easily if need be.

Along a similar vein, Syberia is wonderful.

Flipht , to nostupidquestions in Why can’t we fall asleep on command?

Sleep now is a lot more difficult than sleep 100 years ago.

Light matters. Blue light from computer screens has been tied to sleep issues. The theory is that it mimics certain bandwidths of sunlight that our eyes are primed to read as “daytime, get up and start moving.”

Hydration and food matters. You need to be in a good state but shouldn’t consume much right before bed.

Exercise matters. A lot of people have trouble sleeping if they move around a lot before bed. Since we have electric lights and can stay up very late doing stuff, it’s hard for your body to know it’s time to start winding down.

Best solution I’ve found: no caffeine after noon, consistent bed schedule (both going to sleep and waking up), black out curtains and/or sleep mask, earplugs/earbuds/brown noise track, and stop using screens an hour or two before bedtime.

cley_faye , to nostupidquestions in What other less-toxic system could work instead of karma?

Score the posts, not the individuals. Attaching imaginary points to any kind of activity instantly turns it into a competition.

Instead, any scoring should focus on actual content, which is basically what the up/down vote is.

tvcvt , to selfhost in [Question] Best way to set up docker containers that depend on other container

I think what you’re describing can be accomplished with docker-compose’s depends_on option. I’m not certain how it works across compose files, but that would be the first place I’d look.

fernandu00 OP ,

Yeah…seems like the depends_on works with multiple services in one single compose file…and putting 10 services in tha same compose file is messy

narc0tic_bird ,

You can split services into multiple YAML files (i.e. docker-compose.database.yml and docker-compose.backend.yml or whatever) and then use docker compose up -d docker-compose.database.yml docker-compose.backend.yml. Compose treats this like it would one file internally (i.e. the services are connected to each other via an internal network by default).

Bookstack is a really nice wiki/documentation tool.

You may also like wiki.js or even just storing markdown files in a git repo. Lately I’ve been using Obsidian to manage some notes about servers, but am thinking of going back to bookstack to “publish” docs for others.

@erre@feddit.win avatar

I feel like I’m missing something here. I’ve never needed to worry about docker container IPs.

I wonder why you want them to have fixed IPs. I guess I want to understand the problem it would solve.

If all you want to do is have the other containers use the pihole as DNS… they’d already be doing so if the server is using it as the DNS server.

At worst you’d need to provide

<pre style="background-color:#ffffff;">
<span style="color:#323232;">dns:
</span><span style="color:#323232;">  - <server IP where pihole is>
</span>

property to the services.
