HidingCat , to android in Best phone around 120 and 200$? (Read description)

no front camera

That sounds impossible, I don't think that even exists now.

Android 8 or 9

Really, next thing you'll want are Windows 7 PCs? All these OSes are no longer supported, no one is going to sell that new.

monkey011 OP ,

I unfortunely agree with your first point. I prefer older OSes because newer ones are usually filled with more garbage.

DpwnShift ,
@DpwnShift@kbin.social avatar

Of course you're allowed your opinion, but what exactly are you referring to by "more garbage"? Are you sure you're not talking about bloatware installed by phone/carrier companies that's completely separate from the actual operating system? Also, just like PC operating systems/there are OSes designed to be extremely lightweight, with low system requirements.

Security-wise, using any older OS is a terrible idea, IMO. As long as any personal information will ever pass through that phone, that is. Even if someone discovered a way to remotely hack your phone, eavesdrop on all your interactions, and steal your information, it wouldn't be patched, even if the vulnerabilities were published. These old OSes literally aren't supported anymore.

With that said, I wish you good luck in what you're searching for...

monkey011 OP ,

I mean TTS, “Phone Boosters”, animations and other things I don’t need.

Not everyone wants to void their warranty or risk making their phones unuseable.

Someome being able to remotely hijack a device that is running an os built by Google doesn’t make sense. I don’t know exploits that work like this.

BiggestBulb ,
@BiggestBulb@kbin.social avatar

Just because it's made by Google doesn't mean literally anything. Google hacks happen literally all the time.

Just heed the warning and slap new Android on it or an up-to-date alternative OS. Otherwise you're pretty likely to get gotten

randromeda ,

I don’t understand it so nobody does

Just because you don’t understand what security patches are doesn’t mean your phone can’t be exploited, especially when it’s running an os that’s half a decade old.

monkey011 OP ,

Explain how my phone can get hacked then

zysarus ,

There are literally hundreds of security vulnerabilities in Android 8 and 9.

www.cvedetails.com/…/Google-Android-8.0.html

Several of which allow remote code execution (meaning if exploited, attacker would have full control of your device, likely without you knowing). These vulnerabilities can be exploited a number of different ways, for example, this one would just require that your Bluetooth radio is turned on- www.cvedetails.com/cve/CVE-2021-0316/

This one just requires that you open a text message an attacker sends you- www.cvedetails.com/cve/CVE-2020-8899/

This one just requires NFC on your device to be on (which most phones have and is usually on by default) www.cvedetails.com/cve/CVE-2020-0073/

Don’t run old OSes. 90% of the reason new versions come out is to fix these issues.

monkey011 OP ,

Thanks for the effort but i still prefer non-bloated OSes with less data collection. I don’t see anyone complaining about their device being remotely hijacked outside the internet.

zysarus ,

Many of these exploits don’t require that the person using the phone even knows they’re in use bud. You do you, but know that your phone will likely be hijacked to be used as a crypto miner at best. At worst literally all your data will be exfiltrated.

dusty ,
@dusty@lemmy.dbzer0.com avatar

Google isn’t perfect, no company is, just because a big company has made the OS on your phone that doesn’t mean it’s impenetrable, especially if it’s (over) 5 years old like android 8 and 9 are, security issues that exists in these versions of Android are not going away

korok , to startrek in Best order to get into the show without having to watch everything?
@korok@possumpat.io avatar

TNG is, imo, the gold standard and an excellent starting point if you’re not looking to jump straight into Strange New Worlds. Its episodes are generally pretty self-contained, so you won’t be punished terribly for jumping around if you’re just looking to get a taste, and will still be able to enjoy the great episodes it has to offer, but you will get more context the more episodes you’re willing to watch.

Plenty of folks have compiled lists of which episodes are skippable vs worth watching, and there’s pretty universal agreement on which are iconic must-watch episodes, so there’s nothing wrong with following one of those for a first watch. Here’s an example.I’d recommend using the list at the bottom of that page (or another rated list) as a guide, and experiment a bit to figure out a good baseline for how low of a rating is acceptable and how many episodes you can tolerate in your first watch through.

Note that season 1 is widely regarded as the weakest, where the show is trying to emulate ToS and hasn’t yet come into its own, and you can skip episodes more liberally here, or even come back to it later.

rancidity9480 , to technology in What's currently the best Lemmy app for Android?

I’ll put my thoughts on this post as it showed up as I scrolled to get to the one from a day or two ago…I have 5 different Lemmy apps installed right now. Figure that there is going to be a lot of experimentation and work being done right now, so it’s nice to see what everyone is doing.

  • Jerboa - Personally, I really like Jerboa. Being the most mature of the bunch shows. It’s well laid out, has just enough UI options, and works. Except that now Beehaw isn’t on v0.18.
  • Connect - Not open source at this time, I get why that matters to people, but not a deal breaker for me. Typing this comment in Connect. Just updated this morning with additional and redesigned settings. There is about a thumbs width of space between this comment box and my keyboard. That’s kind of yucky.
  • Liftoff - I’m hopeful for this one. It LOOKS the best to me, but there’s some weird UX issues. Biggest being that the only place to see your replies/notifications is the top of the Home feed with no quick way to get there if you’ve been scrolling.
  • Thunder - I can see the potential, but it’s not for me right now. No buttons on comments, you have to use swipe gestures. But posts have buttons. Changing UI options doesn’t actually change anything 95% of the time.
  • Summit - You want a zero frills, dark mode way of browsing and interacting? This is that. I’d love a FEW options (like light mode), but it’s fast and easy. Uhh…just realized I can’t find a way to make a new post…
  • Wefwef.app - Last one. Really slick looking and responsive, but too iOS-y for me. It also claims to have light mode, but I can’t figure out how to switch it. Really polished though.
tanin , to youshouldknow in YSK: If you make popcorn in a pot on the stove, the oil to use is ghee.

I’ve always just used avocado oil. Sometimes coconut oil but that obviously leaves a faint hint of coconut that not everyone likes. I’ll try ghee next time but I never heard of anyone trying to make pop corn with just butter in the pan. That sounds like a mistake folks only make once! lol

RalphTheDog ,

The makers of my commercial-grade popper recommend coconut oil. Like you, I am interested in trying ghee. It’s good to just have a bottle of that stuff handy for lots of things.

Stabbywithsocks1 ,

I think ghee is clarified butter.

themeatbridge ,

They are pretty much the same thing. Clarified butter can be skimmed as soon as the milk solids begin to separate. Ghee is cooked until the solids become browned and settle to the bottom, giving it more of a nutty flavor.

hoyland , to gaming in GOOD games with female protagonists?

Extremely retro, but currently available on the Mac App Store: Mess O' Trouble. It was a WorldBuilder game--think Infocom, but with static pictures you could interact with. I believe your choice of Daredevil Dawn or Fearless Frank had some impact on the gameplay if you got far enough, but child me never did.

Mandy OP ,

Does this game exist on other platforms?

hoyland ,

Doubtful, though it might be possible to emulate System 6 or System 7 and get it running on Windows or Linux.

ironhydroxide , to android in What niche phone features would appeal to you?

Not really a feature of the phone, but a design theory. I want my small phone back. Not this “zenfone 9” size small. Like HTC One size small.

Make it bifold wallet sized, and ~1/2"thick.

These hugely tall phones where you can’t reach the top third if the screen without dropping the thing are just annoyingly huge. Then they make them so thin they can’t fit a big enough battery for a full day use.

Beyond that would like an under display fingerprint sensor. Rear and side mounted always have issues with cases for me, and make it more annoying when using the device while it’s on a desk.

Arch is a bad distro for newbies. Go find an ISO for Kubuntu and install that. The install wizard is idiot-proof. I use KDE-based distros like Kubuntu even though I’m a fairly advanced user so don’t view it as some kind of failure. There’s no virtue in using more complicated stuff. Get comfortable with the easier distros first.

LukeSky53 , to android in What's something that was dismissed as a gimmick but you liked?

Does IR sensor count? I loved that on older phones so much.

CmdrShepard ,

Not a gimmick. It was great to control TVs, air conditioners, audio receivers, and even electronics projects using something like an arduino and an IR sensor. Such a shame that our smartphones have been stripped of so many features as companies have run out of good ideas to increase demand.
