Based on my understanding, Fedora will be unaffected but Rocky & Alma are in some hot water along with Scientific Linux. RHEL is based on Fedora while the others are based on RHEL.

runekn , to news in MEGATHREAD: whatever the hell is going on in Russia right now

Well that was... weird.

I saw several alleged videos of russian frontline units pledging their support for Prigozhin. Combine that with how little resistance wagner faced and Putin might have realized how weak his position is and given in to replacing MOD staff. Not a good look the same day he declared Prigozhin a traitor and promised punishment.

Trading the long-term stability for the short-term. Because now every aspiring russian warlord know that if you don't like something about the state, all you need is just a big enough private army to bully the kremlin, lol.

techters ,

I don't know why anyone is taking any of this seriously. For all we know, this was done to lure Ukraine into following them into Russia to fall into a set trap, or theater or withdraw and resupply without looking weak. It is odd that it looks like Putin had weakness, but they can always say that's what it was later and the propaganda will work like it always does.

tias ,

Do you really think Ukraine has an interest in following them into Russia? If I was them I would just want to take back Ukraine and secure the borders.

techters ,

They currently have an operation attacking into Russia's boarder...

abhibeckert ,

Only if you accept Russia's description of where the border is. The border as defined by every other country in the entire world says Ukraine is still in their own territory.

There have been some Ukrainian sympathisers setting off bombs/shooting down aircraft/etc inside Russian territory - but those aren't Ukranian soldiers and they're pretty generally just a few random/nonconsequential attacks and don't show any signs of being linked to any "Operation". The front line of the battlefield is nowhere near the border.

hrimfaxi_work , to asklemmy in What's your favorite memory from the early internet?
@hrimfaxi_work@midwest.social avatar

Primitive search engines often allowed you to browse websites by topic. You could click on stuff like different music or film genres, specific movie or book titles, or celebrity names, and youd be presented with a list of all websites on that topic.

Since it was the early internet and everyone had multiple personal geocities or angelfire sites, you’d churn up pages upon pages of results for everything. Each search engine produced vastly different results, so you could waste a day on Alta Vista, then go to Excite and do it over again, finding a bunch of different stuff.

I’d spend hours opening websites for shitty (and some surprisingly excellent) bands from all over the world. A handful even went on to real life notoriety.

My biggest flex along those lines is I became a huge fan of AFI in 1992 or 1993 because there were some folks in California writing about the punk scene, and they came up a lot. Sometimes somebody would host 30 second .wav (.ra, maybe?) files recorded on a crappy tape recorder or something from a live show or local radio station. It was a cool time to be young and excited about music.

first day on lemmy, and this is the shit i see right off the bat. I found my reddit replacement.

deweydecibel , to fediverse in Shouldn't all the instances show the same community content?

That's the idea, but the reality is turning out to be very different with defederation. The result is two users looking at the same post see different content, which is not a great look for an aspiring reddit replacement, frankly.

timespace ,

I think the multiple communities of the same topic across different instances is a mistake honestly. Information/discussion should be concentrated, not spread about a bunch of places.

I read on here they are working on a method that would allow communities across instances to merge. I hope that happens.

Imo, federation should mean the same communities are replicated across all instances. If an instance wants to house its own content, they can maybe make a community that isn’t replicated to all the others but accessible nonetheless by everyone (ie Piracy community, maybe not every instance owner wants to replicate that to their instance).

I dunno, the bifurcation of communities just seems like a mistake and less efficient than everyone in the same place sharing knowledge and ideas.

andobando ,

I dunno about this. I REALLY like the idea of fragmenting the whole user base. When a community gets too big it ceases to be a community.

Why does the whole internet need to see then same content, and be a collective hivemind?

Whats wrong with the current user size we have on this current community? Id even argue its too big already. If it blows up by 100x we run back to having posts with 10k replies, 20 or so which everyone will read. Its a really dumb system

Poggers ,

I like both, in their own time and place. For memes, news, etc? I don't usually need to comment on those posts, but I do like there to be a steady stream of new content from a bunch of people. In that case, I'd love there to just be a bigger community, even if I don't feel like my comments (if I made them) would be read.

However, if I'm trying to have discussions about Magic, Zelda, teaching, or cooking, then I would rather have the smaller community to actually have discussions. Even it that case though, having one place as a "news aggregator" for that hobby would be nice.

plus this content is served off of Vultr’s CDN instead of your instance, meaning even less CPU load for you.

Currently the Lemmy backend proxies all image requests, so this isn’t true (for now).

@sparky@lemmy.federate.cc avatar

Ah! Noted. That said, it is definitely storing the bytes on the object store. I imagine someone clever with nginx or such could set up some rewrite rules to bypass pictrs entirely for GET requests, but unfortunately that’s beyond my pay grade here.
