When I was 18, 18 years old, I saw for the first time in my life, I saw a vision of clarity. I saw a comic strip, a three panel comic strip that, though simple as it seemed, changed me, changed my being, changed who I am, made me who I am, enlightened me. The strip, Garfield, the comic strip was new, no more then maybe a month and a half since inception, since… since coming into existence, and there it was before me in print, I saw it, a comic strip. What was it called? Garfield. The story here is of a man, a plain man. He is Jon, but he is more than that. I will get to this later, but first, let us just say he is Jon, a plain man, and then there is a cat, Garfield. This is the nature of the world here. When I see the world, the…the politics, the future, the… satellites in space, and the people who put them there, you could look at everything as a man and a cat. Two beings, in harmony, and at war. So this strip I saw about this man, Jon, and the cat, Garfield, you see… yes, hmm, it is about everything, this little comic is, oh… lo and behold not so little anymore. So yes, when I was 18, I saw this comic and it hit me all at once, its power, I clipped it and every day I looked at it and I said, okay, let me look at this here, what is this doing to me? Why is this so powerful? Jon Arbuckle, he sits here, legs crossed, comfortable in his home and he reads his newspaper. The news of the world perhaps. Then he extends his fingers, lightly, delicately, he taps his fingers on an end table and he feels for something. What is it? It is something he needs, but it is not there. Then he looks up, slightly cockeyed and he thinks… his newspaper in his lap now, and he thinks this: “Now where could my pipe be?” This… I always come to this, because I was a young man, I’m older now, and I still don’t have the secrets, the answers, so this question still rings true, Jon looks up and he thinks: “Now where could my pipe be?”, and then it happens, you see it, you see… it’s almost like divine intervention, suddenly, it is there, and it overpowers you, a cat is smoking a pipe. It is the mans pipe, it’s Jon’s pipe, but the cat, this cat, Garfield, is smoking the pipe, and from afar, and from someplace near, but not clear… near but not clear, the man calls out, Jon calls out, he is shocked. “Garfield!” he shouts. Garfield, the cats name. But let’s take a step back. Let us examine this from all sides, all perspectives, and when I first came across this comic strip, I was at my fathers house. The newspaper had arrived, and I picked it up for him, and brought it inside. I organized his sections for him and then, yes, the comic strip section fell out from somewhere in the middle, landed on the kitchen floor. I picked up the picture pages and saw up somewhere near the top of this strip, just like Jon, I too was wearing an aquamarine shirt, so I thought, “Hah! Interesting, I’ll have to see this later.” I snipped out the little comic and held onto it, and 5 days later, I re-examined, and it gripped me, I needed to find out more about this.
Variety - a silly taskbar program that changes my background randomly from my own selected sources with added random quotes. I have it set to change my background every 3 hours and the quotes every hour I think. I just can’ live without it anymore.
Maybe it’s not about humans and never has been. Maybe by the time the gods realized how much of an issue humans were, we were already too widespread for them to destroy us without either running out of mana or ruining earth for everything.
Maybe the cancer is a god’s plan, but it’s not working well enough.
Pending means the sub hasn’t gone through to the home instance of the community. If you’re the first subscriber, this means the there will be no inbound federation bringing the content from that community to your instance.
If someone else on your instance has already successfully subbed, the federating is already occurring, and your instance will be receiving the activity as it comes in.
Your instance will then show it to you, both in your subscriptions and in general, even though the sub is pending.
If your sub stays pending, you may have to unsub and resub to get it to work. If no-one else on your instance has subbed either, then the activity will continue to not show up for as long as it is pending.
This. Racism, bigotry, homophobia, xenophobia, etc will never go away, but hopefully it will go back to being something that is shunned instead of promoted
Either it will get incredibly better, or it will just fade out (except in some applications like execution of process based work, and possibly in the creative arts).
My choice is screen on the CLI. It’s an old one, but I just learned about it this year and it’s been amazing helpful doing complex, long-running tasks via SSH.
Yep! You can have multiple named screens, log them all individually, and they’ll keep processes running even if you disconnect. Never used tmux but screen is usually installed on the systems I’m working on.
The only way you can do this, is if the only service you use the provider for is storage. Encrypt the data before you send it to the provider and then they don’t know what they’re storing.
If they have to do any processing on it at all, then conceptually they need a plain text copy of it to feed into the CPU. And if they have that, there is nothing you can do to stop them from stealing it or using it.
There has been some research in this field, the concept is called homomorphic encryption. That is where you encrypt something in a way that allows a third party to manipulate the data without possessing a key. It is still very limited, and likely always will be due to the extreme difficulty of the question.
Everything, considering we’ll be fighting each other over puddles of standing water in about two to three decades. Today’s life will seem like paradise in comparison, even for people who are currently suicidal.
the future is not set in stone. Our weather predictive models are finding it harder to predict, given the high variability and uncertainty. Her kids might actually be fine.
I hope they are. I just don’t trust corporations/governments to take the major and expensive steps required before it’s too late, and I have a hard time seeing past that. Individuals can only do so much.
I have a 13-year old son I love more than life itself, and my greatest regret is bringing him into this world. It was not my place to create yet another source of suffering in this pit of eternal damnnation. I will definitely not make the same mistake again. Luckily I’m currently pretty much infertile.
