CrabAndBroom , to asklemmy in What is your favourite open source software that you discovered in the past year, that you can no longer live without?

My favourite recent one is Yunohost, which makes it super easy to spin up a little self-hosted server with a bunch of apps. I’ve been having good fun with that and a spare Raspberry Pi lately.

What’s the opposite of congress?

I think dd is the right tool for the job. Consider using pv though. It can be much much faster.

Well my good-faith arguments would be direct democracy (i.e. everyone votes on every change) or ranked choice, but that has its own problems. However, you didn’t say it has to be serious. So I suggest a system that locks a chimpanzee on LSD into a room with signs (options) and blinking lights. Chimp starts rolling and points to the blinky light he likes (or hates) either way, your government is operating far more efficiently than hairless apes doing something that is apparently too much work, and most are just as ill-informed as acid-chimp. I honestly think acid chimp accidentally gives you a better (albeit random) set of values than capitalism/democracy ever has.

Having a truck (I wish…).

weeeeum ,

Trucks are undeniably useful, but now have become an instrument of ego, and a status symbol, hence the stupidity of modern pickups. Hopefully they close the loophole of “light trucks” so these things don’t have to be so recklessly dangerous, same with SUVs.

Haha, yeah, I’m sure diseases will just respect our personal bubbles in the future.

I’d prefer GNU’s ddrescue just because I find it more robust and has better progress output. It’s functionally the same interface but lets you use a mapfile to resume sessions should anything happen to interrupt the copy.

Arguably I’m against this because you never know what’s going to happen and the conventional wisdom for appliances like this is to just backup any important configs, backup your containers and vms, then do a fresh install from the latest install media on the new disk followed by a restore of the backups. It might take a little more time but it’s negligible and allows you an opportunity to review your current configs, make necessary changes, and ensure your backups are working as intended.

The issue is that I can’t really fit all of the data somewhere else. Can I shove it onto the 4TB drive and then mount it on a new proxmox install and recover from there?

The answer was a resounding no

Varyag , to gaming in I have been getting into emulation (discussion)

Welcome! Emulation is probably my favorite method of gaming nowadays, giving me access to most of the classics of gaming from over 20 years of history all at once. If you have a decent computer you get get everything up to the PS3 generation easily, and a less powerful one or a phone can go up to the PS2 or PS1 gens, still giving you plenty of gaming options. I have found so many games and genres I would normally not get into, by trying them out via emulation. Arcade games, especially. I love arcade shmups of the 90’s and early 2000s.

there is an emulation community on lemmy.ml and another at lemmy.world but I would understand if you don’t want to interact with those. I am kinda surprised dbzer0 doesn’t have one.

@db0@lemmy.dbzer0.com avatar

Well we don’t “pre-open” the communities😅 . The hope is that emulation enthusiasts would naturally realize our instance is the best fit for that sort of thing.

Varyag ,

Hm. Maybe I’ll do it, then. Don’t know if I got the patience to admin a community but I am an emulation enthusiast.
