I don’t know why you guys keep pretending X is Truth Social levels of dead. Is this just copium or are you really that far removed from reality? X is absolutely in a significant decline but it’s still the dominant microblogging platform by a mile. All politicians, all media organisations, all celebrities use X. And ultimately these are the accounts that will determine whether X remains relevant in mainstream society.

All true.

With that said, Bluesky has had one hell of a growth month - not just from Brazil - and that’s nice.

Even assuming 25% of Twitter users are bots (probably a significant over estimate), and even if half of Twitter’s users quit in the next year, it would still be 150x bigger than mastodon

(Mastodon has ~1m MAUs, compared to ~421m for Twitter)

chiliedogg , to asklemmy in What is your favourite open source software that you discovered in the past year, that you can no longer live without?

I didn’t discover it this uear, but I started using QGIS professionally when the small city that hired me to, among a lot of other duties, be the new GIS department.

Turns out they thought ArcGIS cost the same as like Office or Acrobat, and they didn’t budget for it for the fiscal year that started 2 weeks before I started working.

Anyway, I’ve gotten pretty good with QGIS, and we’re sticking with it. It does everything I need it to do, and I can still pull stuff from most REST servers.

Knoxvomica ,

As a GIS person all I can is …fuck yeah. I’m for better or worse deeply embedded in the ESRI world but I’ve started dabbling in FOSS GIS software and honestly it’s all damn good. I don’t understand how ESRI charges what they do. Also, FME is amazing if you haven’t tried it yet (not free or open source) but awesome for quick visual development and data ETL.

archomrade ,

I use this for architecture and it’s saved me so much time

ESRI is in the position that Microsoft and Adobe want to be in, a de-facto monopoly.

OutlierBlue , (edited ) to asklemmy in To people who choose not to swear (for non-religious reasons), what is your motivation to be that way ?

I try to avoid it because it dilutes your actual point. They’re filler words, that are sometimes used for actual emphasis, but mostly just said out of habit and really don’t mean anything at all.

Besides, if you rarely swear, it makes it even more powerful when you actually fucking mean it.

BaroqueInMind ,

Fuck no, they are powerful words that can convey emotion better than regular words, to the point where mods will ban you for hurting their feelings.

rtxn , to linux in Do you know if it's possible to run a second session in a window?

XWayland has something called a “rootful mode” where it opens an X11 session as a window nested inside a Wayland session. www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ij3rsqX2pKQ XWayland will be started as your own user, but maybe you could use sudo -u … to set a different user.

The other possibility is to switch to another terminal session with a different user, start an X11 session with startx, and use x11vnc -listen 127.0.0.1 -forever -passwd PASS1234 to run a VNC server that’s only accessible from the local machine.

I would get a cheap MinisForum/Beelink mini-pc with an i5 and install Yunohost, or Casaos, or Cosmos or something like that, really easy to install, use and maintain.

To access the PC, just add a Wireguard server to your mini-pc server, set wireguard client on the PC, AND and you’re ready.

I got this one for around US$360 and added a SATA 4TB SSD to it, running all my services out of it and have yet to see it hit 50W.

You know old Teflon is toxic… sounds about right.

some_guy , to nostupidquestions in How come Israel don't use Mossad to take out all of the Hamas leadership similar to what they did after Munich? Would this not be better than bombing stuff into oblivion?

The “war” in Gaza isn’t meant to take out Hamas. It’s meant to eradicate the Palestinian people.

Don_Dickle OP ,

Ok I have seen many replies saying the same thing but the question I got if say they take Gaza what are they going to do with it? Just focus on the West Bank?

some_guy ,

Presumably. They want to kill all Palestinians or drive them out. Either is acceptable to them.

some_guy , to asklemmy in To people who choose not to swear (for non-religious reasons), what is your motivation to be that way ?

I choose to swear because sometimes words aren’t enough otherwise. When faced with the horrors of this world, sometimes a good “fucking” paired with whatever garbage is just appropriate. As in, “this fucking society.”
