I suppose I’m a left-of-center liberal who flirts w/ anarchism & libertarianism. Thr’s a lot of alt, electronic, exp’tal, & “world” music I like. I’m working on fan-fix-tion for The Handmaid’s Tale and Star Trek.

I’ll stick to refilling old bottles with tap water.

DMBFFF ,
@DMBFFF@lemmy.world avatar

Normally one puts used 2-liter pop bottles into recycling.

Occasionally I reuse one a few times.

Why would I buy a water bottle when I essentially have one—at times several—already?

DMBFFF ,
@DMBFFF@lemmy.world avatar

Maybe, but such would be insufficient, IMO.

We must cease using all plastic:

plastic shopping bags, plastic textile bags, nylon, polyester, food wrap, margarine tubs, most electronics, automobiles, electric bikes, pedal bikes, definitely tires, plastic sandwich bags, tea bags, pens, chewing gum, filters, plastic pill bottles, plastic syringes, plastic in diapers, plastic in bandages, plastic in tampons, use only glass bottles for shampoos and conditioners, non-plastic combs and brushes, (most) imitation leather, plastic election signs, plastic gardening pots and trays, plastic garden hoses, plastic piping, plastic fuel containers, plastic casings for batteries, plastic electric chords, plastic in masks for the next pandemic, etc.

They’d have to be enforced to be effective.

Who made his gold-painted shoes?

The price of computers and TVs would skyrocket—making the tariffs regressive taxes—though it might also spur repair and re-use.

Clinton and others will probably be ready, and probably do better in court.

Aileen Cannon?

According to WP she’s “Judge of the United States District Court for the Southern District of Florida” so it’s unlikely she’d be hearing their cases; and I don’t think she’ll be hearing his appeals. Trump’s convictions might be dismissed by SCOTUS, but 5 November 2024 is 151 days away.

In the 19th century, it was whiskey.

Trump + billionaire elites

and the political idiots who vote for him are okay with that.

Are they using helium?

If so then re-use the helium.

I figured they died because they protested in a Communist dictatorship.

DMBFFF ,
@DMBFFF@lemmy.world avatar

I just pulled this out from WP:

wp:Red August

(my bold)

Red August (simplified Chinese: 红八月; traditional Chinese: 紅八月; pinyin: Hóng Bāyuè) is a term used to indicate a period of political violence and massacres in Beijing beginning in August 1966, during the Cultural Revolution.[1][2][3] According to official statistics published in 1980 after the end of the Cultural Revolution, Red Guards in Beijing killed a total of 1,772 people during Red August, while 33,695 homes were ransacked and 85,196 families were forcibly displaced.[1][4][5] However, according to official statistics published in November 1985, the number of deaths in Beijing during Red August was 10,275.[5][6][7]

This was back in Mao’s time.

It seems that Communism killed those Chinese people.

DMBFFF ,
@DMBFFF@lemmy.world avatar

Presumably,

Mao self-identified as a Communist (or something like it) and is today defended by such.

Deng self-identified as a Communist (or something like it) and is today defended by such (at least by many Chinese).

Palestinians, Gazans, and Jews were victims of the Crusaders.

DMBFFF ,
@DMBFFF@lemmy.world avatar

good point.

though I think they were a little bit more socialist in the earlier years.

I don’t like any of them.

might as well throw this in:

wp:Albanian–Chinese split

By the early 1970s, however, Albanian disagreements with certain aspects of Chinese policy deepened as the visit of Nixon to China along with the Chinese announcement of the “Three Worlds Theory” produced strong apprehension in Albania’s leadership under Enver Hoxha. Hoxha saw in these events an emerging Chinese alliance with American imperialism and abandonment of proletarian internationalism.

The might have been the reasons, or some of the significant reasons, for the protest but I don’t think Mao would have tolerated them more than did Deng.

@DMBFFF@lemmy.world avatar

Comments like this do nothing but make the Pro-Palestinian anti-Genocide movement look pro-Hamas.

some of them are.

DMBFFF OP ,
@DMBFFF@lemmy.world avatar

Yes, IIUC the theory goes that they did it to split support for Fatah, and if so, it seems to have worked.

Arguably, Hamas has done much for the Israeli right.

Maybe it’s just me, but while I support human rights for Palestinians, the right of Palestinians to be anywhere in Israel, and a right of return for those chased off going back not only to 1948, but earlier, say 1930, nonetheless, fwrick!, I find many of these protesters annoying, be they from Europe, that great shithole of antisemitism, California, where Indigenous were hunted for bounties, NYC where AFAIK, there is no record of the Indigenous in Manhattan getting those gilders for that prime real estate, and as for the leaders of the Muslim-majority countries, fuck Islam and their pedophile prophet (note: I’m not insulting Muslims, I’m insulting Islam).

DMBFFF OP ,
@DMBFFF@lemmy.world avatar

okay.

DMBFFF OP ,

Presumably you wouldn’t stand next to a Nazi who denounces Israel’s genocide.

Would you stand next to an Islamic fundamentalist doing the same?

DMBFFF OP ,

Why do I have to agree with or work with Hamas to want a Palestinian State?

I’m not.

DMBFFF OP ,
@DMBFFF@lemmy.world avatar

Yeah.

Mosaddegh was overthrown in 1953 because of US and UK, and about 25 years later, Iran became an Islamic theocracy, which has lasted for about 45 years and seems will continue into its 6th decade.

Well done, America-haters.

Texas Supreme Court rejects challenge to state's abortion law over medical exceptions (apnews.com)

The Texas Supreme Court on Friday rejected a closely watched challenge to the state’s restrictive abortion ban, ruling against a group of women who had serious pregnancy complications and became the first in the U.S. to testify in court about being denied abortions since Roe v. Wade was overturned....

wp:Human rights in the Maldives

The constitution declares Islam as the state religion of the Maldives and states that all Maldivian nationals are required to be Sunni Muslims.[13] It is illegal in the country to proselytize any religion other than Islam, and advocate for secularism or the separation of church and state. Apostasy and atheism are also outlawed and those who identify as or accused of being apostates or atheists are punishable by death by Maldivian law (though unenforced) and are often subject to vigilante violence or attacks with little or no consequences for perpetrators by the authorities.

Defamation and Speech “contrary to the tenets of Islam” is illegal.

As the state partially practices Sharia law in some matters, homosexuality is illegal. The punishment for men is nine months to one year imprisonment, or 10 to 30 lashes. The punishment for women is nine months to one year of house arrest.[3]

not the ones who didn’t steal land or buy stolen land.

Though that might apply to those in Manhattan, California, and Australia.

DMBFFF ,
@DMBFFF@lemmy.world avatar

This is Lemmy: the Shariah law as practiced by the Maldives doesn’t apply here,

nor did the Maldives fight a war for its very existence on the first day of its independence.

DMBFFF ,
@DMBFFF@lemmy.world avatar

Have you been there?

Have you been there, anon?

wp:Maldives

Since the adoption of the 2008 constitution citizens and anyone wishing to become a citizens are required by law to nominally follow Sunni Islam[176] which would make Maldives a 100% Muslim country in theory.

DMBFFF ,
@DMBFFF@lemmy.world avatar

okay.

I hope you enjoyed your visit. 🙂

DMBFFF ,
@DMBFFF@lemmy.world avatar

The Jewish presence in Palestine is older than the Muslim.

For that matter, those in the Maldives were Buddhists before they became Muslim.

Instead of blaming the victims of European antisemitism which kind of necessitated Zionism, you might wag your finger at Europe too for this.
