call your local recycling center and ask. Seriously, they’ll usually be very happy to help you, especially if you’re asking something like this. Most people never bother to check what is and isn’t supposed to be sent to them.

Here’s the thing. Glass is damn near infinitely recyclable in theory. It, however, isn’t usually economically realistic, so it varies a lot from location to location whether or not it actually gets recycled. A lot of it ends up in local landfills.

But, bleach will kill off anything that would be a problem. Mix up a 1:10 solution, soak that shit, then let it air dry thoroughly. Won’t be anything left on it that’s dangerous.

nadram , to nostupidquestions in Seriously, what the f*** is keeping Donald Trump in this presidential race?
@nadram@lemmy.world avatar

We should all be glad he is still in the race. If he moves over, the republicans will certainly have a better chance to win, and I don’t like their agenda at all. But fear of retaliation is what is keeping the republicans in line IMO.

TargaryenTKE ,

I agree in principle, but I feel like I should point out that mindset is very similar to what we all thought back in 2016, and he ended up ‘winning’ because we underestimated his chances. Unfortunately, we’ll just have to let hindsight be the judge

Asafum ,

I’m not actually sure I agree. Trump has so much support right now because he has formed a cult of personality. If Trump goes the GOP goes. Trump dominated every primary, no one else stood a chance, which means there isn’t another GOP memeber that the cult would move to so easily. Trump has a “strength” in being an “outsider” to his base, anyone else who was in the primaries would just be another “elitist” politician to the magas.

Unfortunately our politics have gotten so fucked by a disgusting form of propaganda that disregards the typical “immoral” stances (racism, sexism, etc) that I actually believe the only people that could continue to keep the GOP going are the absolutely disgusting people like MTG and Bobert… The loudmouth assholes with no regard or respect for anyone but their “tribe.”

EncryptKeeper , (edited ) to selfhosted in Paid SSL vs Letsencrypt

The point of paid SSL at this stage in the game are the higher tiers of verification. Instead of just verifying that you own the domain, you can verify that you are who you say you are. These are called Extended Validation and Organizational Validation certificates. This has historically been desirable by businesses. It used to be that these higher tier certs would not only give you a lock icon in the address bar of a web browser, but also a little blurb confirming your organization is legit. Not sure if this is still the case though. You will see the extended validation when you check the sites certificate though for sure.

As far as encryption and security, there’s no difference. Also side note, the Comodo brand still technically exists but it was bought by Sectigo like 7 years ago.

i_am_not_a_robot ,

I’m pretty sure browsers stopped distinguishing EV certificates years ago.

EncryptKeeper ,

I think you are right but I wasn’t sure. Like technically you’ll still see the details if you open the certificate but… who’s doing that?

Bug has been officially filed and confirmed in the arch repos. gitlab.archlinux.org/archlinux/packaging/…/8

Guess they will figure it out and fix it in the next update.

Edit: The issue was tracked to a problem with the opencv package and the new version is in the testing repos. I have activated the testing repos and grabbed that package and it does in fact fix the issue.

pumpkinseedoil , to nostupidquestions in Why limit immigration?

There only are so many resources for them. Here in many European countries the main issue (I think) is that with the current numbers we fail to teach them all our language (it’s simply not possible without having more language teachers available, and apart from needing those teachers that also needs more money). Without knowing the language their professional development is massively hindered, causing many to remain lower class, and causing disproportionately high crime rates among certain groups.

This leads to further problems: In the big cities there already are schools where people who speak the local language are a minority (for example in a primary school near me they have two classes for each grade (1-4) for children who can’t speak German yet and one class for all grades together for German speaking children).

So guess what people do: They go to a district with less immigrants, while the districts with many immigrants keep getting more immigrants (since cost of living is low there and as pointed out earlier many struggle to leave lower class). We’re re-creating segregation. This makes it even harder for those people to leave lower class, since they have no networking opportunities but only know others from lower class instead.

Even the left wing parties are now saying that we have to reduce immigration and instead integrate immigrants better.

Cryophilia OP ,

That’s a good point. Maybe a more even distribution of immigrants would help.

It’s a little strange to me because the US has no official language. My poor grasp of Spanish and Chinese is actually a hinderance here in California.

GBU_28 , (edited )

That’s a problem though, you can’t dictate where people live, within the country. Even if you tried, assigning them to a very expensive town, perhaps where no one knows them or speaks their language just puts them dead in the water.

Also, the US has a primary language, not a federally official language. The same issues of disadvantage occur if you can’t speak English.

adespoton , to nostupidquestions in how do I accept I'll never know why any employer rejected me?

There’s actually multiple questions here.

The hiring process has an application “filter” layer, a candidate selection layer, and THEN the interview with the person/people who actually want to hire you. Sometimes there’s an extra technical interview after that.

These days, the filter layer is mostly automated. Asking the filter why it didn’t select you is like asking a Machine Learning model why it chose to do something a certain way — you aren’t going to get a useful response.

So the only way to figure it out is trial and error: vary your application in terms of structure and content until you find the combination that makes it last the current batch of filters.

OR

Find a way to skip the filters altogether by finding someone on the inside of the company to flag up your CV to the people looking to fill the position.

Once past the filter, you get to HR, and if you get this far, asking questions about why you didn’t get selected to continue will actually be met with a useful response (unless it’s a company you don’t want to work for). HR will tell you the basic things they’re looking for in an application, and possibly how you compared in certain criteria to the stronger candidates.

Next you get to the manager. If you get this far, you can usually have this discussion at the end of your interview. They’re looking for fit for the role, and you can ask questions about fit as part of the interview process.

And finally you get to the technical interview. If you get this far and don’t get the job, the reason why is usually fairly obvious: either they had someone who was both a better fit AND understood the problem domain / demonstrated an ability to learn and reflect the team culture better, or you failed to prove technical ability in a key area.

AA5B , to nostupidquestions in how do I accept I'll never know why any employer rejected me?

My current company makes the effort to at least tell whether you’re still under consideration but I don’t think they’re allowed by legal to give any details.

At least in the US, it’s fine to not give a reason but if you do give a reason you’re liable for it. What company wants to risk that?

Asafum , to nostupidquestions in Seriously, what the f*** is keeping Donald Trump in this presidential race?

It’s propaganda.

Everything you listed is a “Democrat lie” if you were to ask a Magoo. Fox news, Newsmax, and the like spend an enormous amount of effort in creating a reality where Republicans are always the victim, and they point to the population to say “you’re next!”

Anything they can’t say is specifically a lie, they’ll say “well you did it too so it’s not bad.” Anything else just isn’t a concern to them since people like Hannity tell them what to think.

technocrit , (edited )

they’ll say “well you did it too so it’s not bad.”

And they’ll be right apart from it being not bad.

norimee , to nostupidquestions in What to do with glassware that is impossible to clean

Put them in the glass recycling. This might be different from your general recycling bin.

To recycle glass they break it down into tiny shards, it gets industrially cleaned and then melted and formed into new glassware.

Glass doesn’t has to be clean to be able to be recycled, just mostly separated into colours.

bob_omb_battlefield ,

I’m not sure this is the correct thing to do. Around here they say that only container glass can go into the glass recycling because the composition of other glass can be different…

kava , to nostupidquestions in Seriously, what the f*** is keeping Donald Trump in this presidential race?

Did everyone just collectively agree to forget 2016? The polls were all favoring Clinton by a dramatic margin. CNN famously had a headline where they predicted Clinton had a 99% chance to win off of the polls.

And what ended up happening? 538 (before bought and neutered by ABC) gave the odds 65-35 or so, in Clinton’s favor. Trump ended up winning that 35%. This year, according to polls, Trump’s odds are better than in 2016. Kamala has the upper hand, but

A) lots of things can change suddenly before the election (like the Hilary emails thing)

B) polls are not the ultimate arbiter of who will win an election- actual real votes are

C) Trump more than likely has some “extracurricular plans” in store, much like Jan 6th, that has a chance of working.

Tldr: don’t get drunk on positive news. Keep a level head and you’ll see this election is still very close to a coin flip

  • Having hand sanitizer in your everyday bag. I’ve been doing it way before the pandemic and it’s a quick and easy way to disinfect while you’re out and about and not near a restroom to wash your hands.
  • Want to get free food a couple of times a month? Just go on eventbrite and meetup and look up free events in your area. If you are in a relatively large city, chances are there are a ton of free events every week where you can just show up and get free food in exchange for a little socializing.

If you are based in Europe you could always try a GDPR subject access request to see the notes they’ve taken. Not sure if you can try something like that wherever you are though!
