The media is owned by rich old white men that would gladly accept fascism for lower taxes. It’s that simple.

SonarTaxLaw ,

That sure is part of it but don’t forget about voters. Even with all the gerrymandering and other sh*t, he does actually have a base of real supporters who can and do vote. Now the question is, how does he have supporters? I think the general answer is for decades if not generations, the Republicans have been systematically destroying public education, presumably because it’s much easier to trick an ignorant electorate into voting against their own interests than it is to trick a well educated electorate. They have been preparing for this for a long time… To really protect our democracy, we must invest in our population - and specifically in education. We need smart, critical thinkers to take this country forward.

Our ISPs are too cheap and lazy to even try looking. I still use I2P, but only because I need to justify my tin foil hats collection.

daniskarma , to asklemmy in Would you join a fediverse coop?

I don’t see the lemmy model failing. So, as others, I think is more of a solution in search for a problem.

In general I don’t see any reason to leave Lemmy right now.

Also I don’t think things will keep simple with that model. I see a lot of underlying complexities that the current formula does not have.

Maybe it would be a better to try that model on a fediverse area with less success than lemmy.

Peertube is really struggling for instance. Not really on the developer side of things but on the content creators. Maybe a coop of content creators for peertube could me something that is needed on the fediverse.

UraniumBlazer OP ,

Nono, I don’t think that the Lemmy model would fail either. It just would… trudge along (if that’s even a word haha). The potential of Lemmy is huge. In my opinion, we should totally push to get more and more users in. In other words, I think we should actively compete with corporate social media. Why?

For one, corporate social media is exploitative af. I wouldn’t want my mum on that, with all of her data being stolen by the overlords. As for Lemmy, as much as I love the devs and the amazing work that they do, they are kinda like benevolent dictators. What they want to work wouldn’t always overlap with what their donors want them to work on. Of course, they have the right to not involve donors. They are working for peanuts right now. But because of this financial inefficiency going on here, development isn’t fast enough. My mum would find it very hard to use Lemmy for instance.

I would like my mum to be on this platform. I would like her to see how cool it is. However, for that to happen, money needs to flow here. We need more developers (who get respectable salaries). The model that I’m proposing would ensure both, workers’ and consumers’ rights here. My hypothesis is that consumers would be more interested to put in money in a platform that they can democratically participate in. Workers would like to work in a platform where they too can participate democratically and earn respectable amounts of money.

If we have to make this competitive, then I believe that we would have to adopt the above model. The donations based model just seems too chill to take on the corporations imo.

Why do we all have to wear these ridiculous ties‽

aeronmelon ,

They’re waiting for you, Gengar, in the test chamberrrrrr.

Kalkaline ,
@Kalkaline@leminal.space avatar

They are markers of who belongs and who doesn’t in the corporate environment. Ties tell me that you love bureaucracy and meetings but hate real work. You can’t do real work in a tie and if you do, your tie is pretty gross.

Gork ,

This is why super tacky, gaudy, ridiculous ties should be worn. It draws attention away from the quality of your work so you can do it with complete mediocrity that’s symbolic of bureaucracy.

Contrasting bright colors. Polka dots. Razzle Dazzle. American flag. Busy stripes. Mildly phallic and vaginal but not quite HR reportable.

ZycroNeXuS , to asklemmy in People who have those extra fold out laptop monitors, are they any good?

I have a Mobile Pixels one, it’s certainly been a big help. Power and picture from the same USB-C cable. It was kind of hard to install (have to adhesive on some magnets correctly, glue wasn’t too great, I recently replaced them with some other adhesives I bought online, worked good so far).

For the most part it doesn’t give me any issues, does what I want of it, but if I have one complaint it’s that when I’m playing a game that uses my laptop’s graphics card, I will usually have to unplug and replug the screen back in because it begins fizzling out like it’s losing power or signal. Functions fine after though. It’s slightly annoying but not that big a deal.

Overall I don’t regret my purchase, I just wish it was a bit more polished with an easier and more reliable mounting process and not fizzling out when I play intense games.

sometimes even if you had the best application in the world you’d get ignored. Lets say HR has limited resources, X work hours to find a suitable candidate. They post an add and get 400 replies. After reading 100 of those, they are running out of work hours, and have already shortlisted a bunch of good candidates. So they toss the 300 others in the bin.

This happens all the time sadly.
