For a physical book, I’m reading “One Hundred Years of Solitude” by Gabriel García Márquez. I’m not too far in yet, but I’m enjoying it so far. I am having some issues keeping track of names, which usually isn’t a problem for me, and I’m not sure why.

For my drive to work, I’m listening to “Words of Radiance” by Brandon Sanderson. I’m not sure if I’m really enjoying it or not, but I’m giving it a chance. For the first book, I thought it was just okay until about the last third of the book, so we’ll see how this one turns out.

You should name her Chocolate Rain!

I’m thinking about Boudica, since she’s a wild little fighter. Plus it goes well with the Arthurian name of my other kitten.

I usually give a week or so of separation to make sure they’re used to each others smell.

Thanks for taking her in, I can’t believe some people.

Also so new kitty can be vetted* for diseases. I hope OP takes new kitty to the vet before really introducing, if they can.

*Pun absolutely intended.

BakerBagel OP , (edited )

The vets are booked up for months around here. I haven’t even gotten Niniane in for her first vet appointment (scheduled for the emd of the month), even though i got her a month ago. On Monday I’m gonna call the vet and see if i can make the visit i have scheduled a double appointment. Other than that, I’m gonna give the stray a dewormer tomorrow after she eats breakfast.

alquicksilver ,
@alquicksilver@lemmy.world avatar

That’s unfortunate, but I’m so glad she (and Niniane) have someone like you to care for them!

BakerBagel OP ,

Yeah, that’s one of the drawbacks of living in a semi-rural city in Ohio. Niniane’s mom was a barn cat though, so i i figure she was exposed to worse when i got her. Her mom’s owner only put the bare minimum into preventative care for the cats since coyotes are such a big problem around here. Meanwhile the stray was a “city” cat, so I don’t think she was exposed to anything Nini wasn’t already exposed to. I’ll keep an eye oit for worms in the litter box, but the stray was probably only slightly more at risk for something nasty than Nini was when i got her. Either way, I’ll know in a couple weeks.

Ephera , (edited )

I don’t know a thing about cats, but I would’ve expected there to be more diseases in the city, with all the humans, car exhaust, trash etc…

No, it is not normal as far as I know (within the world of smartphones). However, this was a widely reported problem with one of Xiaomi’s recent flagships so it could be a similar design flaw.

I am reading Wheel of time. Currently on Book 4. Book 2 was a slog to get through but I am loving book 4 (book 5 counting the prequel).

SassyRamen ,
@SassyRamen@lemmy.world avatar

My brother has tried to get me into reading those since we found the first one in our public library in the early 2000s. Are they as good as he says? I’ve read The Sword or Truth series, are they similar?

IsoSpandy ,

I haven’t read sword of truth and I actually started reading because I am a Sanderson fan. But they are good. A bit slow to be honest, and apparently it will get even slower, but the world is fucking awesome. The world is set in an age which lasted for 3000 years, and there are significant things that lead to the creation of this age and Robert Jordan makes it feel like so. The world has a deep fucking history.

There is a part in book 4 where the main character gets to know events of the past (This is the best I can say without spoilers) and that had me in tears man. I would tell you to read upto there at least, then decide. I know it’s a long journey but I am loving it.

If I do read them, I’ll need to find a German copy, which I can thankfully order from the bookstore near my apartment 😁

The Pillars of Time, the third book from The Sword of Truth series, played with time shifts, but only for tension building purposes. These explained how one character was following in the tracks of the main character. The second was far more gruesome, still to this day it gives me chills.

When I read it brought you to tears, I added the series to my must read list! I just hope it’s been well translated, unfortunatly not all media is.

The link on your comment doesn’t work.

IsoSpandy ,

The link is a magnet link actually, so it gets picked up by a torrent client. But the link I posted is for the English version.

Happy journeying the story of the Pattern of the Age. After I finish this series I might look into The sword of truth.

Drusas ,

I don't mean to be replying to every post on this thread--I guess I love a lot of books--, but I'm going to have to recommend these in particular for people who don't usually read.

I had this friend in college who had never read a book of his own volition. He wasn't the sort of person who was proud of the fact, he just thought books were boring and had trouble getting through them. This horrified me, as somebody who had a collection of some 500 books or so at that point (almost all of them read). Anyway, he read Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy and then Catch-22, and he was hooked. He's been a reader ever since.

I’m currently reading the first Harry Potter, but this time in German.

The best science fiction has to offer:

Metro 2033

Sphere

Jurassic Park

Roadside Picnic

Metamorphosis

Add from Stephen King:

Night Shift

4 Minutes to Midnight

(Both are novellas/story collections)

And also:

The Call of Cthulhu and other weird tales

Drusas ,

I agree with more than one of these, but I would call out The Metamorphosis as one that everybody should read. You can appreciate it at any age (well, within reason--maybe not for the 8-year-olds), it's dramatic and captivating, and it's short.

I always try to recommend books of short stories to my friends who like to read but don't have much time for it.

Good on you for taking her in, but I’d suggest keeping her separated from your other cat until you can get a vet to look at her - there are a few nasties that feral cats tend to carry that you probably don’t want your other cat to catch

BakerBagel OP ,

Unfortunately the vets are all booked up for months around here. I haven’t even had my first scheduled appointment with my original kitten yet, so there’s no way to get the stray checked out before introducing them. I didn’t find any fleas when i brushed and bathed her this evening, and i am gonna give her a deworming pill tomorrow after breakfast.

Australis13 ,

Keep them apart for a week or so if you can to let any incubating infections show up. I recently had an upsetting experience with a family of stray kittens and their mother that my wife and I rescued, only to find out that they had feline parvovirus and had to be euthanised (whilst the kittens seemed fine when we caught them, the prognosis for kittens with parvo is horrendous; even the mother only had a 50/50 chance of survival). We kept them separate from our cats (and they are vaccinated anyway), but we still had to bleach the bathroom almost to oblivion to kill any trace of parvo. It was just a horrible situation.
