Yay!

Things are going well.

Hoping to see France meet the milestone since that’s where the focus of the campaign was.

I wish I could sign from the UK.

Vittelius OP ,

A UK petition is in the works. But it might take a month or two until that goes online.

Didn’t they have one already when the Tories were like “nah let the free market decide”

Vittelius OP ,

Yes there was one but the Tories didn’t have anything to do with it closing, at least not directly. If an election happens all open petitions are closed as a matter of process, because “it’s a new parliament”. And then you need to resubmit.

SubArcticTundra ,

That’s great to hear. I was just thinking that Parliament had a similar petition website

Metal Gear Solid 3.

I played overnight, alone in the dark, and it thunderstorms that night around the time I reached The Sorrow. Nothing else has been more memorable.

caoimhinr , to asklemmy in Why does it seem the world is all of a sudden concerned about sexual orientation? Especially America. Did I miss how far we came as a society to see it take a 40 year step backwards?
@caoimhinr@lemmy.world avatar

Especially America? There are countries executing people for their sexual orientation.

Don_Dickle OP ,

Well in america it seems to seems that people are theologically do things against LGBTQ and enacting them. The news we get and i preface this while knowing America is on the brink of it. That other countries or instutions are savages. Not my opinion but what we see daily.

DaedalousIlios ,
@DaedalousIlios@pawb.social avatar

My guy, there are entire countries controlled by Islamic Extremists where you’re lucky if all they do is kill you when they find out you’re LGBT, and it’s entirely for “theological reasons.”

I put this in quotes, because I’m not nor have I ever been a Muslim. But Islamic Extremists will kill gay people for supposed “theological reasons.”

It’s most definitely not just America doing it because “mah holy book says it’s wrong.”

Don_Dickle OP ,

Like I said I am in America and all we see is how backwards other countries are on the topic. It just feels like America is now in the process of becoming one of them

CrabAndBroom , to games in Is Elder Scrolls 6 doomed to fail? I can't see how it will work

I think they’re falling into the same trap Bioware fell into, whereby they have a couple of critically acclaimed franchises under their belt and are universally praised and all is well, but then obviously that can’t last forever so as soon as the wheels start to wobble a bit, they start over-thinking, over-developing and over-managing their games because the next one needs to be a massive hit, but then what inevitably happens is they end up sabotaging development as they keep throwing out ideas and polishing all the rough edges off. So you actually end up with something that feels under-developed and bland because it’s all designed by committees and middle-managers, and built by underpaid devs on a crunch who just want to be done with it.

Also Microsoft bought them in the meantime, which can’t be helpful.

bastion , to linux in Is Linux (dumb)user friendly yet?

Yes, it’s easy. BUT:

  • buy Linux-compatible hardware. While you might technically be able to get something to run by fucking around, it’s just better to bit Linux-compatible hardware. If something doesn’t work, it doesn’t work, put it on a shelf and try again in six months.
  • If you’re dual-booting windows, know that windows occasionally nukes the boot loader, so that only windows loads. This happens irregularly, like every 2-5 years. A Linux friend can help fix it, or you can follow instructions online (you need an empty thumb drive to do it).

It’s possible, but even at that level of detail it would have been trivial to add a white dot and elongate the red triangle. I’m thinking they intended it to be Palestine.

xonigo , to nostupidquestions in Why is there no Christmas version of Spirit Halloween?

Walk into any Goodwill. You will no doubt find their Christmas aisle fully stocked all year round.

Spirit Halloween probably makes most of its money on the expensive Halloween costumes that parents buy for each kid every year. Christmas doesn’t have any yearly cost item unless you get a real tree and those are already sold at temporary specialty shops

outstanding_bond , to science_memes in i will never understand scientific fraud

The thing that gets me is that these people are all really smart. If someone is willing to lie and do math, why not work at an unscrupulous pharma/finance company? They’d make way more money and do way less work. I’d even argue that fraud in the private sector is less unethical - if investors give money to a fraud they deserve to lose it, and regulators take an adversarial stance and have whole orgs (in theory) policing fraud like the SEC and FDA.

It takes a really particular kind of scumbag to seek a position of public trust, make a bunch of trainees financially and professionally dependent on them, accept taxpayer money intended to help cancer patients, then commit fraud.

MNByChoice ,

I don’t think it is a “and then commit fraud”. They only got caught for the recent stuff.

tburkhol ,

I don’t know about this specific case, but it’s common for the big name researchers not to do any actual research or play any direct part in generating their images. That’s often done by kids - 25 year old grad students, even 20 year old undergrads - or other trainees. Those people may not appreciate how easy it is to detect image manipulation and are still learning what kinds of ‘refining’ of imagery and datasets is acceptable, while the PI that pays their stipend or sponsors their visa rages at their inability to get an expected outcome or replicate a previous result.

Not saying there aren’t people out there just flat-out frauding, but these are group projects with a structure of trust and pressure that can muddy assignment of culpability. Like any committee or corporate action, it can be tough to say that any one individual is the guilty party or which people where just going along with the group.
