dianyxx , to asklemmy in What duration of time do you connect to intellectual property?

I've always felt that it should be the lifetime of the creator and if there's no heir established to carry the reigns of the IP - then public domain. Companies like Disney love to lobby and push that number and have pushed that number to ridiculous lengths so that it's like 500 years (exaggerated since we know it's like 90+).

Because say the creator dies, they have not picked a heir or that they don't have anyone to entrust with, with their IP. It gets funneled through the state's laws of inestate succession.

However, what we mostly have seen is when an owner does give up the rights and it's in the hands of greedy mongrels like Disney. What happens is that the IP is just in a cycle of re-release hell just to keep whatever trademark or copyright alive, doesn't matter about the quality which is usually shit.

And in the video games industry, we've seen copyrights to games that will never see the light of day. Copyrights and IP rights get hot potato'ed all the time because there's so many people involved that it complicates things whenever a creator dies or vice versa. It's why we haven't seen digital releases for No One Lives Forever 1 and 2.

So, copyright has unnecessarily made things complex to where IPs are just used as extensive methods of profit, some of which aren't even being directed to the original creators. Which makes me feel like copyright should just be the lifetime of the creator and then outsourced to public domain.

It’s hilarious that you

A. Got mad enough to post about it.

B. Considered disrespecting this person you know nothing about by posting a picture of them taken without their knowledge.

C. Lack the empathy or intellectual capacity to imagine a world in which they’re justified for their behaviour because you wanted the experience to go a certain preconceived way.

D. Still think you somehow have a point, when in fact your stewing is your own fault.

dianyxx ,

It's even more funnier that:

  • You willingly made an account on here
  • Took time out of your day to read this magazine, click on this post and make a comment
  • Come out thinking you're the righteous one when you've had all of the choice in the world to simply not say anything
aniki ,

Nice bait mate.

AlexanderESmith ,

A: I think you missed the point of this section of the fediverse. Check the name again.
B: OP never said they considered doing that; posts normally come with images, but they didn't have a picture of the mildly infuriating thing itself, so they posted this image instead.
C: This is the worst take ever. The person on their phone during a dark-room performance is the one lacking empathy, and you are too since you can't understand why this would be annoying.
D: The. Whole. Point. Of this community is to vent about annoying things. Is everyone here that stews about some annoying person or thing just incomprehensible to you?

I checked your comment history and all you do is complain about other people's comments (and most of your comments have been deleted by mods). Go back to Reddit if you just want to troll.

haui_lemmy , to games in Are any gaming streaming platforms besides TTV, YT (& FB(?)) viable?

Since you‘re on the fediverse already, consider peertube. It still needs work in discoverability but from a data ownership perspective its pretty top notch.

I seek a big userbase, not fedi-like alternative. I want to freely find nerds to nerd with.

haui_lemmy ,

Yeah, thats what we call a trade off. The large userbases are on the bad platforms and the good platforms have small userbases.

Until people start at least mirror their stuff on (eg) peertube, we wont see increase in userbase.

For that reason, if I planned to interact with a large audience, I would go to twitch, no two ways about it, but mirror on peertube so it gets a chance to grow.

There is no free lunch. We have to put in work if we want to see positive change.

Tellore ,

Interesting thing to try to make something else more popular is to start on twitch, mirror somewhere else, than declare you move there and mirror TO twitch from there. So that you don’t lose twitch audience but also make some of them want to visit the other site because the main stream is there.

haui_lemmy ,

Cool idea. Thanks for chiming in. :) i appreciate it

SapphironZA , to linux in Is Linux As Good As We Think It Is?

For me the main difference is Linux only does something when I ask it to.

Windows does whatever Microsoft wants it to do.

Both have major usability issues. But Linux gets a higher tolerance level, because of higher trust levels.

orcrist , to linux in Is Linux As Good As We Think It Is?

Who is “we”, my friend? This all depends on your research and expectations. IMO Linux works great, but you should consider it before you buy a machine. Make sure your graphics card and other hardware is going to work. When in doubt, buy from a reliable shop that preinstalls Linux for you.

I find that the default settings and programs of Debian (or whatever major distro) do 95% of what I expect and want, and maybe 5% involve some customization. In other words, it’s much simpler than getting Windows or Apple and then purchasing or downloading all the extra programs. But this depends on what you wanna do.

missingno , to games in Are any gaming streaming platforms besides TTV, YT (& FB(?)) viable?
@missingno@fedia.io avatar

Viable? No. It's pretty much impossible for any new service to compete with the big juggernauts. Video streaming takes a ton of bandwidth so it's one of the most expensive kinds of services to run, and it's pretty much impossible to convince anyone to switch over from the established platforms. Streamers won't move because viewers aren't there, and viewers won't move because streamers aren't there.

Every now and then a new competitor pops up because some venture capitalist thought they'd be special enough to succeed where everyone else failed, and promptly dies. No one stands a chance of taking on Google or Amazon.

People will point out that PeerTube exists on the Fediverse, but all that can really be said about PeerTube is that it is a thing that exists. If it's viability you want, PeerTube isn't there and I don't think it ever will be.

PhD grads? My guys, I’m in the same situation with a flipping Bachelor of Arts in my pocket.

I recently got rejected from a shop that sells cheap and poor quality items for being “underqualified” (the listing required 0 experience and basic education so I’ll go ahead and assume this is the only rejection email template they use and it’s actually the opposite)

D_Air1 , to linux in Is Linux As Good As We Think It Is?
@D_Air1@lemmy.ml avatar

No, not really. I believe it is because a lot of us linux users have more understanding of our systems, so we know why a certain outcome happened vs “it just works ^tm^”.

Also I would like to point out something that I have been telling people for years whenever a post like this comes up. Windows and Mac users do the same thing. They constantly overlook bugs, bad design, artificial limitations, and just the overall lack of care when it comes to various details that more community oriented projects cater to. The reason is because of familiarity. Just like many of us will often not see issues with new comers struggles because we have already worked around all of the issues. These users do the same.

Psyhackological ,
@Psyhackological@lemmy.ml avatar

At least on Linux you can have some kind of control while on Windows or Mac there is an illusion like “can’t do that, fuck you”, while Linux is like “can do that… will you manage”?

apotheotic , to asklemmy in Why do people on Lemmy get mad when you make multiple posts about similar topic?

Looking at your post history, you make a tonne of posts but don’t engage with the comments seemingly at all. That isn’t in the spirit of this sort of platform.

hungryphrog , to nostupidquestions in Why is there so much hype around artificial intelligence?

Robots don’t demand things like “fair wages” or “rights”. It’s way cheaper for a corporation to, for example, use a plagiarizing artificial unintelligence to make images for something, as opposed to commissioning a human artist who most likely will demand some amount of payment for their work.

Also I think that it’s partially caused by people going “ooh, new thing!” without stopping to think about the consequences of this technology or if it is actually useful.

sunscream , to fediverse in What made everyone move to Bluesky or Threads instead of Mastodon?
@sunscream@lemmy.vg avatar

For me fediverse is largely useless because it lacks any viable size of a gay population. From LGBT+ people it has a huge trans community but not gay. If you’re gay and want to interact with other gay men you need to use a more mainstream platform.

Which is a pity because I only liked Mastodon’s UI and the big platforms lack quality of life implementations.
