coyootje , to askuk in What are your red flags for job interviews?

When they ask you for an indication of what you’d like to earn, only to then casually say “okay” to what you said and low ball you by a lot afterwards. Lady, I can’t help that you didn’t provide the salary range in advance, that’s your fault.

mannycalavera ,
@mannycalavera@feddit.uk avatar

They all do that. They’re actually trained in how to do that. It’s some sick Prisoner’s Dilemma thing. They make you give an estimate first and then low ball from there. They don’t tell you a salary range deliberately because they know people will put themselves at the top of the range.

I’ve had it before where I’ve replied to them saying “What’s the salary range” and they’ve said “we don’t disclose that at this stage in the interview what’s your salary right now?”. The fuck. So they expect me to tell them everything and tell me nothing in return? End the interview right there.

db0 ,
@db0@lemmy.dbzer0.com avatar

I’ve read some instructions for workers where it says the best plan is to avoid disclosing your own salary or expectations until much further down the interviews. If they’re willing to hire you already, they’re much more likely to accept your request because doing interviews costs then money.

mannycalavera ,
@mannycalavera@feddit.uk avatar

This is what I’ve heard as well and I think it’s good advice. Putting it into practice is hard though. Do you just say “I prefer not to disclose that at this stage”? Or something else?

Githyanki ,

You can be vague. There are a lot of benefits, bonuses and other perks that make my current salary a little difficult to quantify at this moment.

plz1 ,

That sounds more like HR propaganda to me. Interviews aren’t free, but they are cheap. Paying someone what they are worth, vs. low-balling someone desperate, is fiscally practical.

I’ve gotten to the point where I ask recruiters that hit me up on LinkedIn if the position has a listed salary range. If not, I usually bail right then, unless the job or company is interesting enough to have a conversation. But if they are cagey about salary or benefits, I bail. They are the only reason I’m there, so being cagey about them is a red flag.

osaerisxero ,

This. Any position without a salary band, and a realistically narrow one, isn't a real position.

walter_wiggles ,

That reminds me, I should ask what the previous person was paid before giving my current salary. That way it’s an equal exchange of information.

some_guy ,

I no longer apply to jobs that don’t post salary because of this. It’s a lie. The salary is the low part of the range, but at least that’s something.

rayquetzalcoatl ,

I just lie about my salary when they ask 🤷 Can’t low ball me if I already inflated it lol

blackn1ght ,

I’ve actually had the opposite of this happen to me, I gave a figure and they offered me more. But I’ve also had this happen too when they’ve gone below what I asked.

Because this is not Reddit where regurgitated, repetitive garbage is reposted ad-nauseum. If you're going to say "Reddit is more forgiving...wah" then here's an idea - GO BACK TO REDDIT AND STAY THERE!

tatterdemalion , to science_memes in Tensors
@tatterdemalion@programming.dev avatar

Square matrices are linear endomorphisms. They are isomorphic to (1,1) tensors but not any other rank of tensors.

affiliate ,

a tensor is a multi-linear map V × … × V × V^^ × … × V^^ → F, and a multi-linear map V × … × V × V^^ × … × V^^ → F is the same as a linear map V ⊗ … ⊗ V ⊗ V^^ ⊗ … ⊗ V^^ → F. and a linear map is ““the same thing as”” a matrix. so in this way, you can associate matrices to tensors. (but the matrices are formed in the tensor space V ⊗ … ⊗ V ⊗ V^^ ⊗ … ⊗ V^^, not in the vector space V.)

flashgnash , to linux in Is Linux As Good As We Think It Is?

My experience is generally it doesn’t just work straight away unless it’s something I’ve hammered out myself

I am also using one of the more DIY distros and window managers though, so I wouldn’t expect it to without some attention from me to get it hammered out first

That said, once it’s hammered out it continues to work exactly the way I want it to, it doesn’t spy on me, it doesn’t shove ads down my throat every 5 minutes

Would be an interesting experiment to see how non techy windows/mac users would get on if you just put stock mint/pantheon on their systems but I get the feeling it would not be as smooth as if they just had the thing everyone knows all the flaws of already

dianyxx , to asklemmy in What duration of time do you connect to intellectual property?

I've always felt that it should be the lifetime of the creator and if there's no heir established to carry the reigns of the IP - then public domain. Companies like Disney love to lobby and push that number and have pushed that number to ridiculous lengths so that it's like 500 years (exaggerated since we know it's like 90+).

Because say the creator dies, they have not picked a heir or that they don't have anyone to entrust with, with their IP. It gets funneled through the state's laws of inestate succession.

However, what we mostly have seen is when an owner does give up the rights and it's in the hands of greedy mongrels like Disney. What happens is that the IP is just in a cycle of re-release hell just to keep whatever trademark or copyright alive, doesn't matter about the quality which is usually shit.

And in the video games industry, we've seen copyrights to games that will never see the light of day. Copyrights and IP rights get hot potato'ed all the time because there's so many people involved that it complicates things whenever a creator dies or vice versa. It's why we haven't seen digital releases for No One Lives Forever 1 and 2.

So, copyright has unnecessarily made things complex to where IPs are just used as extensive methods of profit, some of which aren't even being directed to the original creators. Which makes me feel like copyright should just be the lifetime of the creator and then outsourced to public domain.

It’s hilarious that you

A. Got mad enough to post about it.

B. Considered disrespecting this person you know nothing about by posting a picture of them taken without their knowledge.

C. Lack the empathy or intellectual capacity to imagine a world in which they’re justified for their behaviour because you wanted the experience to go a certain preconceived way.

D. Still think you somehow have a point, when in fact your stewing is your own fault.

dianyxx ,

It's even more funnier that:

  • You willingly made an account on here
  • Took time out of your day to read this magazine, click on this post and make a comment
  • Come out thinking you're the righteous one when you've had all of the choice in the world to simply not say anything
aniki ,

AlexanderESmith ,

A: I think you missed the point of this section of the fediverse. Check the name again.
B: OP never said they considered doing that; posts normally come with images, but they didn't have a picture of the mildly infuriating thing itself, so they posted this image instead.
C: This is the worst take ever. The person on their phone during a dark-room performance is the one lacking empathy, and you are too since you can't understand why this would be annoying.
D: The. Whole. Point. Of this community is to vent about annoying things. Is everyone here that stews about some annoying person or thing just incomprehensible to you?

I checked your comment history and all you do is complain about other people's comments (and most of your comments have been deleted by mods). Go back to Reddit if you just want to troll.

haui_lemmy , to games in Are any gaming streaming platforms besides TTV, YT (& FB(?)) viable?

Since you‘re on the fediverse already, consider peertube. It still needs work in discoverability but from a data ownership perspective its pretty top notch.

sunscream OP ,
@sunscream@lemmy.vg avatar

I seek a big userbase, not fedi-like alternative. I want to freely find nerds to nerd with.

haui_lemmy ,

Yeah, thats what we call a trade off. The large userbases are on the bad platforms and the good platforms have small userbases.

Until people start at least mirror their stuff on (eg) peertube, we wont see increase in userbase.

For that reason, if I planned to interact with a large audience, I would go to twitch, no two ways about it, but mirror on peertube so it gets a chance to grow.

There is no free lunch. We have to put in work if we want to see positive change.

Tellore ,

Interesting thing to try to make something else more popular is to start on twitch, mirror somewhere else, than declare you move there and mirror TO twitch from there. So that you don’t lose twitch audience but also make some of them want to visit the other site because the main stream is there.

haui_lemmy ,

Cool idea. Thanks for chiming in. :) i appreciate it
