Debian isn't a meme but it's a good thing that you now have a lot of work to do.

schwim , to linux in Is Linux As Good As We Think It Is?

Like anything else, can be, depending on your needs.

Telorand , to linux in Is Linux As Good As We Think It Is?

But that aside, do we give Linux too much benefit of the doubt relative to the “things that just work”.

No, I don’t think so. There should be an expected difference between Windows (for example) and Linux as far as “it just works” goes, simply by virtue of the fact that one is actively developed by a company with eleventy-bajillion dollars and the other is developed by lots of hobbyists and a handful of profitable companies.

If Windows doesn’t work, it’s not unreasonable to expect that it should. If Linux doesn’t work, it is unreasonable to expect that it always will.

arandomthought ,

Additionally much software (and hardware even more) primarely targets windows as a platform. The way printers mostly "just work"™ on Linux still amazes me, because printer vendors have all the incentives to make their stuff work for the most used platform, which sadly isn’t Linux right now.

Telorand ,

And let’s not forget that printer vendors historically bungle even that much. That they work at all on Linux is a testament to the various Linux devs.

Hawke ,

Also a testament to how much of a benefit it is when the vendors just get out of the way and don’t feel the need to add their own Special Sauce^TM^ to the drivers.

narc0tic_bird ,

To be fair, a big portion of the work that goes into Linux (at least the kernel) is done by paid developers working for big corporations.

Telorand ,

That’s true, it’s not just hobbyists. I meant that the paid effort is relatively small potatoes compared to giant companies like MS.

BennyCHill ,
@BennyCHill@hexbear.net avatar

Pls stop giving billion dollar corporations so much credit.

The difference comes from windows dominant (home pc) market position meaning that almost all software and hardware is specifically made to work with it, with even things that officially support linux being afterthoughts.

bataklik , to linux in Is Linux As Good As We Think It Is?

Exactly. I give more credits to linux, and it deserves this. I like your garden metaphor, yes my linux pc is like my garden and linux behaves to be, unlike windows.

HarriPotero , (edited ) to asklemmy in Do you have any OC's? Can you tell us about any?

I haven’t done that in a long time.

Most recently I probably overclocked my original playstation portable.

CraigOhMyEggo OP ,

OC stands for Original Character.

tobogganablaze ,

That just raises further questions.

CraigOhMyEggo OP ,

It’s a term in the artist community to refer to characters that are standalone, as in they aren’t from a particular work of fiction, which are in turn stereotypically (but not always) used for purposes of roleplaying.

infinitevalence , to asklemmy in Do you have any OC's? Can you tell us about any?
@infinitevalence@discuss.online avatar

I think my favorite overclock was back in the early Conroe days when Intel first released the core m processor. I bought an Asus white book and after assembling everything and doing on a power-on test I immediately powered it off and did a pin modification to force the socket from 100 megahertz front side bus to 133 megahertz front side bus.

It was such a simple modification that netted me significant performance improvements and voided my warranty in the first 5 minutes.

CraigOhMyEggo OP ,

OC stands for Original Character.

Mr_Blott ,

How the actual fuck did you expect people to know that? 😂

CraigOhMyEggo OP ,

When someone in the artist community says OC, it always means that, and nobody ever actually spells it out. So my thinking was, if there were as many artists on here as I thought there would be, someone might have one they could talk about.

HarriPotero ,

I self published two books and am almost ready to do a third. No interest in being a famous author or making millions, just glad to get them out of my head and to know they are just what I intended them to be.

BugleFingers ,

There’s a smaller publishing company for small time authors in Florida (if the company is still around) Called witching hour publishing. Their whole schtick is to make publishing cheaper and easier for small time writers. Check it out, might be worth it if you are gonna be prolific.

Diddlydee ,

Thanks. I’ve got two young kids and a busy job so not as prolific as I’d like. Maybe a book every 3-4 years, longer if it’s a grand fantasy. My first one was a quarter of a million words in a world I created from scratch, so that took maybe 6 years.

You are an inspiration. :)

Speaking as someone who rarely ever writes because life keeps getting in the way but still hopes to be published someday. Every day it seems that dream gets further and further away… :(

callouscomic ,

I saw a comment recently online regarding publishing an indie video game that “nobody played” where people noted you set out to do your goal that very few people ever complete. You published. You’re a winner. You accomplished your feat.

I had similar stuff with music once in my life. It never went where I or others might have hoped. But we recorded and made albums. We played tons of shows. We had a few fans. We opened for big names we loved. I feel like a winner too.

I’m not really saying this to reply to you. I’m not even sure you need to hear it. But someone out there does. Don’t let others define what success or winning is. By setting out to accomplish something, and doing it, that’s a winner already.
