Can you try true instead of True?

…freedesktop.org/…/value-types.html

Values of type boolean must either be the string true or false.

It’s also annoying that Microsoft sends links via sms using a really scratchy looking domain (aka.ms). Turns out they’re legit

BlueSquid0741 ,

But there are so many dodgy similar looking ones that auto complete if you’re typing it.

I went to type in the aka.ms to find a bit locker recovery key. And didn’t realise it autocorrected to something like akam.ms and it was a super sketchy site about bit locker recovery. Luckily I realised straight away even MS wouldn’t host a website like the one I saw.

azertyfun ,

They got the .microsoft TLD a while back specifically for this purpose. Supposedly they want to migrate all their cloud services there, but I learned about that a year ago and I’ve only seen it in use once since (IIRC on Loop…)

And let’s not forget about facebookmail.com, the official mail server for Facebook login notifications since 2004.

The tech is here, the risks are enormous, but the corpos don’t care because they don’t bear the costs of phishing attacks and governments are too impotent to enforce minimum standards of cybersecurity.

tias ,

Their latest iteration of Teams runs on teams.cloud.microsoft.

azertyfun ,

Looks like that works but my bookmark is on teams.cloud.microsoft and there’s no redirect whatsoever. Hopefully they’ll get there in a few months’ time.

Angry_Autist ,

Only reason I knew that was akamai was their hosting for their previous ISO distro system, it does look phish af.

Baku ,

I had to make a police report yesterday, and they wanted me to upload evidence. The (text) message they sent was along the lines of: “A. Last name requests evidence from you. Click here to submit evidence. vp.au/evidence”

Well, it could be argued that Trump is a cold-blooded fossil who looks kind of like that, so I think this has some merit.

@superkret copy the .desktop file to your users .local/share/applications and edit it to have NoDisplay=true

hollyberries ,

Piggybacking onto this, MenuLibre also works and the “hide from menus” setting does exactly that if a GUI is preferable. I used it to hide a bunch of VSTs a while back.

Diplomjodler3 , to linux in Lemmy predicts: Chromebooks will become the new Thinkpads

There’s certainly a case to be made for saving Chromebooks from the landfill by installing Linux. There will be plenty of people who will be happy to have one. But that will be a different target audience than the people who use old ThinkPads.

Maybe building one yourself might be a good idea. I found someone’s old desktop with an 8th Gen i7, 32gb of ram, mobo and Gtx 1070 gpu on the side of the road while on a road trip. Thing was sitting in the rain and slightly rusted, but when I cleaned off the corrosion, stuffed it full of hdds and set it up with truenas scale it’s been running flawlessly with an uptime of almost a year. Been running like that for about 5 years now with the occasional maintenance.

HouseWolf , to linux in The Best way to switch to Linux is to NOT

To add to the software point, STOP buying hardware that requires some shitty software to fully work.

I did this back in the Windows 7 days years before I even knew anything about Linux. But Razers rootkit managed to load in before the Win7 login screen then crash it. After that I avoided any peripherals with mandatory software and it made my transition to Linux a lot easier than most people I know.
