ChatGPT will easily make you a basic GUI in Python using tkinter in my case. Can only recommend. It can also explain how those things work etc.

Diplomjodler3 ,

tkinter is pretty powerful but not exactly easy to use. I’d use something simpler to get started.

Eheran ,

Hence GPT to help. I build a fairly big GUI that way, far bigger than GPTs context window (about 3’500 lines), but as always we can break things into smaller pieces that are easy to manage.

kristoff OP ,

Hmmm … 🤔 The best way not to make friends with somebody with over 30 years of coding experience: suggest him to use ChatGPT to write a computerprogram 🤣🤣

Eheran ,

It is far more efficient to ask specific questions instead of reading the whole documentation. Asking those with relevant knowledge of the field is usually not an option. Asking GPT is an option we now have. Why would you not like it? It is like having Excel instead of a calculator and paper.

wrote a library in BASIC for screen / window applications in DOS. (you know, pop-up text-windows and so on). How do I do that on linux (in C)?
(…)
I know there exist things like QT and ncurses

So it’s graphical interface we are after or text based?

For text, I agree with others, ncurses

For graphical

  • pyGTK
basically everything you need, some learnig curve as it’s big and versatile. But to be honest, when trying to achieve something I’d suggest to start from GTK reference to me it somehow conveys the logic better than the PyGTK reference
  • Kivy
haven’t used it, but might be fun to use
  • wxWidgets
very cross-platform. Not only you can use it to write UI that will require minor fixes to have the same code for Windows and Linux at the same time, you can also tell it whether the toolkit used under the hood on Linux should be QT or GTK
  • Tk
old, simple (more fancy things need some gymnastics) but simple (easy to use) and supported in Python out of the box (you don’t even need to install anything)
  • QT
I’m putting it here just for fairness. I don’t like it, don’t like its signal-slot design, I think it’s hogging up too much resources. But last time I used it was ~10 years ago and in the end, it does in fact work
kristoff OP ,

Wauw! So many answers in such a short time. Thanks all! 👍 (I will not spam the channel by sending a thank you to all but this is really greatly apriciated)

Concerning ncurses. I did hear of it but never looked at it myself. What is not completely clear for me. I know you can use it for ‘low-level’ things, but does it also include ‘high-level’ concepts like windows, input fields and so?

The blog mentioned in one of the other posts only shows low-level things.

Yes, it allows you build full on TUIs.

PiJiNWiNg , to asklemmy in Do you have a form of government you invented/conceived, either as an idea or for fiction (or a favorite from someone else)? How does it work?

So strange to come across this as I’ve been pondering this very thing for a few weeks. Still pretty half baked, and I’m goimg to skip some detail for brevity, but here goes. Behold…

“AdHocracy”

A fluid, decentralized form of government somewhat inspired by the FEMA Incident Command System. It would be designed to facilitate temporary, task-specific governmental structures that are stood up and torn down as community needs arise. National baseline laws would be established to prevent confusion when traversing the country, and a legal framework established to ensure laws are consistent across the nation and no regional law conflicts with, or supercedes the law of, the larger region. Healthy food, clean water, housing, education and some form of internet connection would be considered rights. This system would rely heavily on digital participation, so open source technological development (particularly in cybersecurity) would be heavily subsidized. Establishing a secure digital identity would be needed for each citizen to participate in the governmental process, so likely using some form of blockchain tech.

The land mass of the country would be segmented into a heirarchical grid with a certain minimum resolution (I donno, 100m?) but when mapping a “decision region”, preference would be given to inclusion. For example, if a neighborhood wants a new road, you’d “paint over” the people and areas affected by the road, and expand the edges to cleanly fill a square (not sure I’m explaining this right, but oh well).

I imagine an annual “Call for Change Day” across all regions, allowing people to bring forward proposals for new laws or adjustments to existing laws. Those proposals would be submitted online, and could be easily browsed and voted on, (if pertaining to your region). Transparency is emphasized.

Thats about all I can think of right now.

Not sure if ita necessarily true, but it seems that organizations have a tendency to become more susceptible to corruption and bureaucracy the longer they stick around, no matter their purpose (governments, unions, HOAs, etc). This idea aims to prevent this by eliminating the need for career politicians (as all decisions are made jointly by those diectly impacted), and through systematic deconstruction of governmwntal structures before theyve had time to bloat and fester.

Imterested to hear everyones thoughts! On mobile, so please excuse formatting/grammatical errors.

Libreoffice draw is really bad.

Instead, you either need

  • masterpdf, paid but I guess worth it
  • a mix of: Firefox PDF editor (drawing, inserting images, text annotations), Pdf arranger (bundling PDFs, removing pages, reordering), GIMP (redacting, compressing), Okular (viewing, marking, drawing, bookmarks)
  • stirlingPDF, in a local Podman container, in the browser

There is no free tool that does all the needed things. StirlingPDF is really close though and I am working on good desktop integration.

How easy would it be for you to find (natural) laxatives? ChatGPT names Prunes and Kiwis, Broccoli, Almonds and Walnuts, Yogurt (the white non-sweet kind would be best)

Basically the above is just a who’s who of healthy dieting if you ask me lol. If you need high caloric density for the “eating as much as possible” part just go for anything high in fat and or sugar. Nutella would check both boxes but this is really not recommendable from a health perspective obviously.

Competitive eaters like Beard Meats Food would just chug on double cream if they wanted to get as many calories down as possible. The only “problem” there is that it doesn’t make for a very entertaining video.

Superfederal Katamari

This one is a bit more niche. It’s a short-term revolutionary organizational strategy that would aim to provide a representative framework via distributed fractional shareholding in order to (1) legally seize private capital from a hostile oligarchy, (2) operates a de facto interim government in a post-capitalist/dystopian context.

It would be used as a last ditch effort in lieu of more traditional forms of organization like trade unions and grassroots politics when these have failed. The point would be expediency, to sidestep the immediate need for massive government deposition, restructuring, and/or bloodshed. The key mechanics are of market capture and federalist self-organization.

Market capture apparatus Workers would commandeer the overpowered institutional machinery of modern-day corporatocracy by staging a rapid campaign of mechanized corporate raiding. This would entail using vastly superior numbers to devalue then “eat” corporate entities of increasing capitalization. While this type of raiding would normally face hyperbolic friction due to market efficiency, successful collective action should ignore these effects almost entirely.

Super federalist apparatus The legal tools available for modern corporate organization are extensive and flexible, and crafting democratic and representative structures within these private organizations can and should begin immediately, while market capture is underway. At the outset, however, initial articles of the umbrella (federal) corp would need to be carefully written to strictly enforce the distribution of voting shares. Since aberrant internal power fluctuation would capsize the project and return capital to the free market.

Purpose: Once majority (or total) market capture is achieved, such that the bulk of the economy is technically owned by the umbrella cooperative (the people), the economic takeover would be sufficient to develop a more sensible government without the corruption/interference of the “invisible hand.” It should be much easier to do so after the antagonistic forces of free market capital have been neutralized.

Antitrust: Of course, we are talking about a monolithic transient organization, well beyond the typical monopoly, but the fact that the shareholder base includes all active participants of an economy makes government intervention improbable, and regardless our institutional antitrust measures are demonstrably toothless. Ultimately this revolutionary cooperative should be replaced, because a sensible government designed for the people would ultimately be a more appropriate longterm solution than an adhoc public entity functioning as a superfederalist government.
