A friend of mine for weekly movie night started this habit with his family where every time they watched a movie, the next week, they’d watch the movies advertised in the DVD previews, exponentially growing their movie list. They began with Kiki’s Delivery Service (I think) and ended (to my knowledge) with some random Japanese movie with English closed captions about three women and a girl who accidentally gets drunk and reveals when drunk that she is worried about one of the women moving, but they don’t and the movie ends with them walking along a beach (feel free to tell me the name).

Anyways, of the movies, there are several the library did not have because it runs on contributions.

Not sure about first, but the top 3 that remain as the beginning are:

  • Wonderwoman 1984
  • The Guilty
  • Searching

Use libreoffice over open office.

Blaiz0r ,

But what about Only Office?

beefbot ,

Seconded, why not OnlyOffice? (maybe parent commenter got names confused 🤷‍♂️ no judgement)

as for OpenOffice vs Libre Office— IIRC Libre has more recent development on it, which IMHO feels like a good sign for open source software; it’s kept more up to date

Vinny_93 , to asklemmy in What's your favourite country and why?

I haven’t seen much of the world yet. My dad was set on Germany and later Austria for holiday destinations. When I started going myself I visited Spain, Switzerland, Italy and Portugal. I’ve also been to Budapest (Hungary), Prague (Czech) and Krákow (Poland). I’ve been to England a couple of times because of family.

But lately I’ve been to Portugal a couple of times. I like the Portuguese people, the food, the wine, the environment in general, the ocean… I’ve taken to learning the language as well.

I prefer southern Europe because a) it’s Europe so still familiar but the climate is better, as are the views. But there is still so much to see…

xmunk ,

Portuguese wine is no fucking joke - the home of both vinho verte and port along with excellent standard table wines.

Vinny_93 ,

The Italians don’t do a shabby job either. By and large I prefer wine south of France.

Vinny_93 ,

Obrigado para as recomendancões! Eu tenho tentar de entender sua resposta sem tradução. Minha Português não já é muito bem, mas eu tento.

A lingua está muita linda é eu vou continuar de a estudar!

Les Diaboliques (1955)

Couldn’t find it anywhere, so it’s still at the top of the list.

There are many encodes floating around and even a full bluray copy (criterion collection) on ygg.re… but I’m curious, how come it’s at the top of your list?

Is it people that want to switch away from Windows or switch to Linux?

In my case it was the former, having spent a lot of time on FreeBSD so in 2007 I bought a Macbook Pro running OSX 10.3. This gave me most of what I wanted and when I needed something Windows (XP) specific I installed a VM running under Parallels, then Virtual Box.
I was able to run most of the open source software at that time such as Open Office, Firefox, Thunderbird in preference to the Apple supplied apps.

Might be related to long TTL on DNS entries making it hard to connect one failure to a thing you changed days ago.

I class myself as having similar experience to your friend having used Power Basic and Turbo Pascal mainly under DOS. I was able to use tkinter to produce some simple gui front-ends to produce dialogue boxes, process data and feed it to GnuPlot.

JustARegularNerd , to nostupidquestions in Why is DNS often joked about in the I.T. Industry?

Only a support tech chiming in, so far I’ve found when it goes wrong, it causes errors or behaviours that are unusual and could be hard to trace back. Clients might be confused as to why their laptop isn’t connecting to some services but their co-worker still can.

I’ve currently got an infuriating issue where the DNS on my modem just dies at seemingly random intervals. I set up a monitor using Uptime Kuma to let me know when it goes down, and ever since it just hasn’t been a problem yet so I have no idea why it’s going down. I might just set up a pihole and just work around the problem.

I can see why they would want that. They may consider email to be inherently less safe than their platform, so they don’t send any sensitive information there.

Canada’s government stuff also generally works that way, except without any links.

I’m not sure how legit their concerns are, but it’s a thing.

In fact a lot of things do:

  • My bank
  • All monthly work pay notifications
  • All tax notifications

It’s just normal to not include the actual information. But like you say, except sometimes the bank, they don’t include links.
