Why would this make a difference?

So I deleted the story before I posted it, and began to realize that even though I’m 40, and should be past all this, it still hurts, and I’m a deeply broken person.

The thing about trauma (and it likely is trauma) is that it often just doesn’t go away on its own and you need to do work on it. So, why should you be over it?

Should is a loaded word as it pretty much always comes from what you learned as a child. You should do that. You should be like this.

That “should” probably comes from your father when he told you how you should be as a child.

It sounds like you aren’t over it now, but that’s ok. It’s ok not to be over stuff that happened in childhood. But the important thing to understand is that you can get over it with work. Being aware of that is the first step on that road.

I wanted to write pretty much what you did, but you did so perfectly already.

Generational trauma is a bitch.

MajorHavoc ,

Well said!

I want to highlight this, in case someone read fast and skipped it:

It’s ok not to be over stuff that happened in childhood.

It’s so important to give ourselves permission to not be okay.

You should ask that in the community of your instance, not asklemmy. Asklemmy is not the support community.

JackbyDev , to asklemmy in Can I be picked up from my mom's house as a date since I am an adult?

Yes, of course that’s allowed. Be aware that if you’re name of not on the lease or deed that your mother can kick you out though. Depending on where you live you may have less rights if you aren’t paying rent. In the US it doesn’t matter if you’re paying rent and they’d have to go through a formal eviction process. While of hope your mother wouldn’t kick you out for going on a date, the situation already seems extreme. But yes, you’re legally allowed to do this.

There’s smth about a basket of fires when I’m eating out that I like

MagicShel ,

A basket of fries allows for maximum malt vinegar distribution without spilling into other foods. That’s not how I eat fries often, but with the right fries and environment it’s the best.

ChronosTriggerWarning , to nostupidquestions in Have you ever realized just how broken you are?

A lot of us have stories like that.

When i was 4 or 5, i had a Tender Heart carebear that i LOVED. I took it everywhere with me. One of my first memories ever is my dad calling it “slender fart” to the point of me bawling my eyes out. He has never accepted that this fucked me up in a very deep way. The person i looked up to for protection was hurting me. For fun. I’m in my 40s now, and anything i start to develop an interest in, even to this day, comes with a sense of dread. “How can this be used against me?”

Irony of ironies, my dad now has in inoperable brain tumor. I’ve basically retired early and moved back in with my parents in order to be around if they ever need anything, which is every day. It’s crossed my mind more than once to return the favor and fuck with his addled old brain, but then, would i be any better than him? No, that misery he tried to breed in me stops and dies with me.

lvxferre , (edited ) to nostupidquestions in Why are states allowed to sue each other?
@lvxferre@mander.xyz avatar

Under a federation the subdivisions aren’t just “convenient units”, they should be able to behave in their own interest. And when the interests of different units conflict, they got to solve it some way.

Suing each other might look like a waste of money, but it’s less wasteful than the alternatives, and still respects the principles of a federation (as having the central government dictating it out of the blue deprives the states of agency).

For reference, a century ago my homeland (ParanĂĄ) was disputing area with another state (Santa Catarina), even if both are controlled by the same federation (Brazil). The legal dispute lasted so long that it enabled a civil war, since neither side was properly supporting the population dislodged by a railway company.

AdNecrias ,

When was that? 1800s?

lvxferre ,
@lvxferre@mander.xyz avatar

It’s bizarre to talk about XX century events as “a century ago”, but accurate in this case: 1912-16.

AdNecrias , to asklemmy in Do you know alternative scripts for your language? If so, can you talk about them?

There’s this pretty handy script me and folks around use for numbers, we call it Arabic numerals, even if the Arabs call them “hindian numerals”. They’re pretty handy. Beats roman numerals at everything but looking classy!

AdNecrias ,

Jokes aside, hope people say which language they’re talking about. Mine, Portuguese, doesn’t really have alternate script as far as I know, unless you you count the old mobile phone shortened typing as such

velox_vulnus OP ,

I was talking with respect to modern, constructed writing system. Hindu-Arabic numeral system were borrowed from the Brahmi numeral system almost a few thousand years ago.

Each fry in an individual insulated sock to keep it hot. Socked fries in an orderly stack on a plate. Eaten with chopsticks.

You don’t even need to guess it based on whatever USA they posted at the centre. Just look at Giorgia Merdoni at the left.
