All VPs are basically picked because of what they are more than who they are. Since there aren’t a lot of actual duties assigned by the constitution, VPs are just picked to help win the election. That means their age, gender, skin color, birthplace, etc are more important than their achievements. That means almost all VPs, including Vance, are “DEI hires.”
Rogan josh curry sauce (although most other curry sauces are also good). Chips and curry sauce is a really popular fast food in the UK, but the curry sauce in question is much closer to a brown sauce than it is to anything that's usually associated with the word "curry". So I make my own curry sauce and put it on instead. This does, of course, completely ruin the "fast" part of "fast food", but it is very tasty
I have ordered from TEMU. Yes, getting their free stuff sends you into a black hole. You have to wait a few weeks for most items to show up. It saves a few bucks. Gotta watch the clothing fabric, lots is “shiny polyester”. It’s great for cheap seasonal decorations. Used to be free shipping on a $10 order. Now it’s $15 I think. My partner has figured out you can return at least one item per order for free (and still keep the item) so if you play it right, order a small quantity every day and when you receive it, see what you can return. When you order, it will keep the shopping cart “open” for hours, so if you come back it just adds to the initial order. That’s why I said order a few things once a day. It take like 8 hours to close out the order window.
Had I been asked to pay for shipping or something, I would have been cool with it for these “free” items. But my god, it’s like they didn’t want me to actually close out the order without paying way more than zero for it.
Have you found much practical use for small models yet? I love the idea that even the 1.1B tinyllama model can run on my phone, but haven’t found much real world use for it yet. Llama3 8b feels better, but not much better for even emails as it’s a bit dumb
I use my phone all the time, but I just use a wireguard VPN to tunnel into my home container of Open WebUI. Then I can interact with my desktop machine using a NVIDIA gpu. I’m currently testing mistral-nemo. It’s pretty great but it gets a bit verbose sometimes.
You can do other methods, but this one is simple and effective. Set it up, tell it what bands you like, wait a day and you’ve got the entirety of your childhood favorites and nearly every discography you can think of. All for maybe an hour of upfront work.
Versus remembering every band/song you ever liked, tracking it down, downloading each individually… Like yeah, you can do that. It’s what I do for shows and movies for curation. But for music, I have so much and so many that curating like this just isn’t as worthwhile as checking off a band in Lidarr and having all of their stuff in a few hours.
I’m sorry if I offended. I can’t code or understand existing code and have always felt that technical people code. I guess I should expand my definition. Again, sorry that my words felt like a punch in the gut… wasn’t my intention at all.
It depends heavily on what you do and what you’re comparing yourself against. I’ve been making a living with IT for nearly 20 years and I still don’t consider myself to be an expert on anything, but it’s a really wide field and what I’ve learned that the things I consider ‘easy’ or ‘simple’ (mostly with linux servers) are surprisingly difficult for people who’d (for example) wipe the floor with me if we competed on planning and setting up an server infrastructure or build enterprise networks.
And of course I’ve also met the other end of spectrum. People who claim to be ‘experts’ or ‘senior techs’ at something are so incompetent on their tasks or their field of knowledge is so ridiculously narrow that I wouldn’t trust them with anything above first tier helpdesk if even that. And the sad part is that those ‘experts’ often make way more money than me because they happened to score a job on some big IT company and their hours are billed accordingly.
And then there’s the whole other can of worms on a forums like this where ‘technical people’ range from someone who can install a operating system by following instructions to the guys who write assembly code to some obscure old hardware just for the fun of it.
I've been in my field for 21 years. I make really good money, and have high confidence in my hard-earned skillset. I focus on Cloud Infrastructure and general Linux administration, but I code in a handful of languages to facilitate automation (because I'm lazy). I consider myself extremely well versed in technology in general.
... Then I watch a YouTube video where some guy hand-solders a motherboard for his custom-designed keyboard, and decides it's easier to - instead of adapt someone else's - write his own driver from scratch, then open-sources everything from the PCB, to the CAD files he used to print the case, to the driver itself. Then he uploads the video, titled "Quick weekend project because I couldn't find the keyboard layout I wanted on Amazon", and forgets about the whole thing.
In that moment, I feel like a complete, no-nothing idiot.
A person with a doctorate in astrophysics isn't not-a-doctor because they don't know how to do brain surgery. Hell, a doctor who is a surgeon isn't not-those-things because he isn't - specifically - a brain surgeon.
Don't sell yourself short because other people do things you don't (yet, or even ever). You're a technical person.
It’s not literally a scam, in that I’ve ordered things and they’ve arrived (in a timely fashion, actually), but the “free” stuff is pretty close to being one. The free credits or whatever are so over the top as to be eye rolling, so while they probably are officially a scam, I just couldn’t get too worked up.
Overall, it’s basically a tiny bit cheaper than AE, a tiny bit faster, but with more limited selection and they make the annoying gamification on AE look like the height of restraint and class. I found my personal line for trading time and tracking for cheap prices, and it’s between AE and Temu.
One tangential weird thing is that I’ve seen Shein, the fast fashion brand, has gone full “marketplace” and is now selling a lot of Temu like stuff that has absolutely nothing to do with clothes.
