I didn't know California is a private company

yogthos OP ,
@yogthos@lemmy.ml avatar

California isn’t a private company, but it relies on private capital to do infrastructure development. Hope that clears things up for you.

But the decision-making process is supposed to be done by the state, right?

yogthos OP ,
@yogthos@lemmy.ml avatar

When your whole economy is organized around private ownership then the role of the state is to primarily mediate between different capitalist interests. It’s not like California has public sector capacity to deliver large scale projects that way state owned enterprise does in China.

@Athelstan@persadon.com avatar

@yogthos
I asked about the decision-maker; is the state of California responsible for making the decisions regarding building speed railroads, cancelling it, switching to hyperloops, again cancelling it, etc? (yes or no)

yogthos OP ,
@yogthos@lemmy.ml avatar

You’ve asked a loaded question, and I gave you a response that includes important context. The scope of the decisions a government can make is inherently limited by the options the government has. Not sure why that’s difficult to understand.

Do the Mario RPGs count

I like the timing-based mechanics because they make the fights feel less like glorified menus. Sure menu-based fights can be strategic and entertaing, but sooner or later you’ll end up in grind city just mashing the confirm button to see number go up. Not a thing in the likes of Paper Mario and Bug Fables.

Honestly I just watch streamers like Cohhcarnage or Lirik as they pretty much only play new and indie games and they tend to give honest opinions on what they play. Literally just bought an indie game today after watching Lirik play it.

Taisei and Minetest with VoxelLibre

NodeCore is another great Minetest game. I haven’t been able to find a game that matches the feeling of discovery it provides as you learn about the rules of the world.

I managed to complete one round in Monstrum . I nearly quit a couple times, because wow this game can be frustrating. But I made it through in the end, once I got a better idea of where certain items would be and how the monsters vibe. I'm kind of glad I stuck with it for a couple days; it made escaping that much more satisfying.

The Spectrum Retreat seemed intriguing, so I gave it a go. It was not quite what I was expecting, and I'm not sure I really liked it. The set up was a little odd, in my opinion, where you would have a bit of story and then a block of Portal-like puzzles, sans the humor. The puzzles weren't really all that difficult, but they seemed disjointed from the story, which in itself was vague and left me with a lot of questions. I guess I shouldn't have expected much for a game built around puzzles, but still.

Also played through The Vanishing of Ethan Carter Redux. I gotta say, the story is not at all what I expected, in a good way, although I'm not sure I'm a fan of the ending. Walking between areas was a little tedious, but the scenery was absolutely beautiful, and the sprint speed was a lot better that most walking sims I've played. It kind of reminds me of What Remains of Edith Finch or Dear Esther, both of which I also enjoyed. I think I might play this again sometime just to take screenshots.

I'm not sure what game I'll be playing next, but Diablo 4's Season 5 is coming up next week, so I'll probably dip back into GamePass to see what's on there.

GammaGames ,

I didn’t know they redid Ethan Carter! The original release used photogrammetry and was GORGEOUS, was one of my favorite walking sims

CharlesReed ,
@CharlesReed@kbin.run avatar

It's an Unreal Engine 4 remaster! I haven't played the original so I can't really compare, but I have read that they added some additional dialogue lines as well.

GammaGames ,

I’ll have to check it out, thanks!

Such a shame…

Here’s Gideon Zhi’s response and a little explanation, from his side anyway, of what has actually happened.

If you’re not familiar, he runs Aeon Genesis, one of the longest, if not the longest, running translation groups.

bassomitron ,

Yeesh, I’ve never used the website but that NightCrawler person seems like they have some serious control problems. The fact that the whole community was willing to chip in/pay for it and take it over and the admin still refused to cooperate is pretty shitty. At least it looks like someone managed to convince the admin to let them host and takeover the site’s wiki.

Ashtear ,

This is oddly common in ROM hacking/mod scenes. There’s been no shortage of drama in the Fire Emblem and Final Fantasy Tactics communities, too.

At the very least I wish people would consider the bus test once a site/project gets to a certain critical mass. Insane to me that a site with this kind of profile never had coverage for that scenario this entire time.

Peffse ,

I really hope that tcrf doesn’t take over. I STILL can’t contribute to that website because it requires you to sign up for Discord and agree to Discord’s ToS just to paste some stupid code into their bot.

capt_wolf ,
@capt_wolf@lemmy.world avatar

Wait are you talking cutting room? I had no idea they did that. Very weird for a site that’s just copying Wikipedia.

catloaf ,

Copying Wikipedia? Where did you get that from? They have loads of content, including stuff like text dumps, that you’d never see on Wikipedia.

capt_wolf ,
@capt_wolf@lemmy.world avatar

I mean the format, it’s a generic wiki formatting. Not referring to the actual content. The content they have is awesome.

catloaf ,

Yes, the software that runs the site is Mediawiki, same one that runs Wikipedia and others. Sites can add their own registration requirements.

doctortran , (edited )

after some further research, it became apparent that Discord staff could save a significant amount of money by changing S3 providers. The new bucket was set up, but when the time came to make the change NC refused to do it, even though he was not the one footing the bill.

There’s a conspicuous absence of explaining why they wouldn’t do it. What were their actual concerns? Did they not voice them or are they just being withheld?

NC refused to join the Discord to talk about solutions in real-time.

Why was this a requirement?

Did we vent in private? Sure.

And what did you say?

Did we dox or threaten? Fucking hell, no! And frankly I’m LIVID at even the suggestion that we did.

Well something clearly happened if his family was brought into it, so if you’re going to skimp on the details, I’m not sure how I’m supposed to believe that.

The whole thing just comes back to the larger issue with discord: the record vanishes.

obstbert , to asklemmy in What are your favorite open-source games?

I don’t know if it counts, but I think the source code of Freespace 2 was released eventually und a non-profit license. The community did some great things with it, especially the Blue Planet campaign.

God, I loved this game.
