As Capitalism continues to decay, and disparity continues to rise, both progressive and reactionary groups enlargen as the unsustainability of the status quo becomes more apparent. This is represented by a rise in fascism and Socialism.

Well, I don’t know if this will help or not, but maybe a viewpoint from the other side would help.

Now, back when I was young, I was more like you, just eager to get in there and go. So I definitely get your perspective.

For many people, a job is something they have to do, and it is often on a schedule they would never choose.

Shifting from “real life” thinking and action to “I’m working” thinking and action can take more than just walking in the door, particularly if the shift hours don’t match your internal clock (which is why I have been on both ends of your situation). Having time to shift gears into work thinking may be necessary for some people, and not a sign of laziness.

The early time of a shift is the only time it’s realistic to do that.

Now, if they’re leaving the work for others, that’s just rude, and a violation of professional ethics since the patient always comes first. You can’t putz around when patients need care. An hour is a very long time for that mental change as well, I would expect no more than enough time to drink a cup of coffee/tea/whatever.

There was one place I worked that factored it in. You start shift, then report for a sit down chart review, but were allowed to chat and socialize during that. Fifteen minutes, then you go to your area and handle the exchange of shift with the people on shift already. That usually takes about ten minutes with a realistic patient load.

Then, you go and do your patient checks or whatever other duties were in order for the shift you were on.

This was as a nurse’s assistant in my case, but the nurses and other patient care staff did the same thing.

But it is also easy enough to see why people in general would end up taking longer without someone pushing them along via policy.

In your situation, there really isn’t much you can do. You either do what you’re already doing and hope it doesn’t grind you down, or you follow the group and use the time to prepare for your shift and thereby make it so they have to step up when it’s apparent you aren’t going to cover for them. There’s obviously differences in U.S. vs German nursing, but I would be very surprised if there wasn’t paperwork or other things you could do while they socialize that would force them to do their part.

If there isn’t paperwork, or charts, there’s gotta be something like organizing and checking medications, stocking any carts with supplies, etc. That lets you do work that benefits you, while staying busy enough that everyone else will have to do their job because you’re Andy already doing something. Before I ran out of steam from the mismatch I have with the predominant shift times, I would very often be found prepping the supplies for my shift instead of wasting time, and that meant other caregivers would have to answer their own room calls and such.

This seems rather strawman-y

I posted this meme in three places. Did you not read any of the threads where old, cranky FHS luddites came out of the woodwork to angrily dismiss the concept of immutable distros?

LaggyKar , (edited )
@LaggyKar@programming.dev avatar

None of which are in this picture. The person in the picture talks only favorably of immutable systems yet is apparently against them, thus making for an easy target by arguing against themselves, so a straw man.

I’m actually positive to immutable systems, I just thought the argument wasn’t great. I realize that’s about what Skinner does in the meme, but it feels weak.

On second thought, I think the reason it was so jarring is because normally points against Skinner are in top picture, and the bottom picture has him abandon that line of thoughts in favor of something simplistic, thus changing his mind from one side to the other. Whereas here, the points against Skinner are at the end point of the meme, and thus he argues in both directions simultaneously.

For those saying this is probably just the devs being lazy… Well, they took the effort to write these two lines of CSS, and took the time to make sure they displayed as the exact same color.

    input:checked+.slider {
      background-color: rgba(18, 107, 255, 1);

    }

So there was effort to make both sides blue, whether that was incompetence or intentional, the design itself is still an asshole design and should be shamed :) Good toggle switches can be found all over the web in seconds!

It means “anyone who doesn’t immediately agree with anything I say/repeat” in magaspeak.

ArbitraryValue ,

I think OP’s question is about why parts of the Democratic coalition are hostile to other parts of the Democratic coalition, not about why Republicans are hostile to Democrats.

cabbage ,
@cabbage@piefed.social avatar

If a self-proclaimed "part of the Democratic coalition" is dismissing whatever arguments you make by weirdly comparing you to John Locke as a slur, chances are they are they are not, in fact, part of the Democratic coalition. The fact that they are borrowing their slurs from the conventional fascists should be telling enough.

They might even share employer.

ArbitraryValue , (edited )

I think that even the people who are just as bad as you say are also part of the Democratic coalition simply because both they and I will be voting for Kamala Harris in November, although they will be doing it while complaining a lot. I’ll be complaining a little because I’m never going to support any candidate 100% but my ideal candidate would still be a centrist Democrat.

With that said, I’m not sure how long this coalition will hold together because I would rather vote for a centrist Republican than for a leftist. Right now the Republican party is the one dominated by its extremists but if they return towards the center (Trump won’t live forever) and the Democrats shift left, a lot of liberals will be reconsidering their political alliances.

cabbage ,
@cabbage@piefed.social avatar

I have seen people argue that they will never vote for Harris, because she's just part of the same rotten establishment etc etc. Mostly from the same people who use liberal as a slur. They seem to be very loud around here.

I might be ignorant though. Have anyone established/respected in the circles around Sanders/the Squad used the term "liberal" in a similar sense? Or is it mostly by faceless folks online?

JimSamtanko ,

Those people were never voting for any democrat. Regardless of who was chosen.

BackOnMyBS , to nostupidquestions in Can someone define "liberal" (in its use as an insult) for me?
@BackOnMyBS@lemmy.autism.place avatar

I’m not really into this stuff, but from what I can tell, liberal became an insult purely because conservatives wanted to label liberals as inferior. That’s about it. Some leftists also use liberal as an insult, though to a lesser extreme.

How conservatives use it, liberal means someone that is too sensitive, accommodating, weak, and evil (especially in Christian terms).

How leftists use it, liberal means uneducated, hypocritical, insufficient, and turncoat/traitor.

cabbage ,
@cabbage@piefed.social avatar

So when self-proclaimed leftists use as a slur it's not even in relation to support for private property rights?

I guess, if you're a proper communist, you could use liberal as a category of leftists who don't want to abolish property rights. As for the far right crowd, it could be a slur for anyone who doesn't want to abolish all other rights.

You should look into Rockbox. It’s an open source alternative firmware for a variety of portable media players that adds features such as support for more file formats (and it runs Doom). As for which supported players I’d recommend then maybe a flash modded iPod or an AIGO Eros Q or K (also sold as the HIFI WALKER H2, Surfans F20, or AGPTek H3).

I’m amazed none of these have been mentioned yet. Here are some of my faves

Explaining stuff that’s happening

  • Real Life Lore (I’m almost signing for Nebula because of him, gorgeous map graphics)
  • Cold Fusion
  • Wendover

History stuff

  • Fall of Civilizations - Hands down the best documentary-like content I know of. Takes forever for new stuff to show up (because research), but it’s so fucking worth it!
  • Study of Antiquity and the Middle Ages
  • Kings and Generals (the narrator butchers every non-anglo name, it really grinds my gears)
  • Heroes and Legends - The long form, documentary-level videos are amazing. Watch the ones on Gertrude Bell and Voltaire

Gamurrs

  • Basement Brothers - Almost monotone narration, but possibly the only channel in english that plays and shows several details of old Japan exclusive PC games (PC88 and PC98 mostly)
  • Russian Badger - There’s a very high chance you’ve seen some of the memes straight out of his videos. Start with “Heavy flamer heresy” if you’ve never seen any.
