That last one has me stumped… Their hands look like they’re good at sprinting from a standstill? 🤔

It means their limbs look strong (they look fit)

I’m pretty sure they only talked about torque and nothing about sprinting.

In case you learned about torque from a gearhead, torque is essentially a measure for the rotational effect of force around a fulcrum. So, since most (all ?) of our limb motions are turning around some pivot point (joints), we can measure torque for all of those.

Now I realise how hard it was for them to define torque to me as a child.

Viking_Hippie ,

In case you learned about torque from a gearhead

Yeah, English isn’t my first language and the first time I heard the word was watching Top Gear as an adult a decade or two ago, so that’s my most immediate association 😄

zout ,

It looks like they have strong hands. Based on this joke I think.

blaue_Fledermaus ,
@blaue_Fledermaus@mstdn.io avatar

What does toque have to do with sprinting from a standstill? Torque of more like, capacity to put out mechanical energy. I read this as "your arms look capable of lifting heavy weights".

Viking_Hippie ,

I first learned the word in relation to cars where torque plays a big part in acceleration 😁

ulterno ,
@ulterno@lemmy.kde.social avatar

Yeah. Torque (at the wheel) multiplied by the wheel radius will give the force that the car exerts on the ground, parallel to the ground. That will finally determine the acceleration of the car.

Though from what I remember, torque - as given with a car’s information - is measured at the flywheel, so there’s more calculations you will have to do to get the correct answer.

Viking_Hippie ,

Whereas the torque of my limbs are measured at the fly of my pants, am I right? Up top!

(I am not right)

That’s actually a really good book. It’s a sci fi novel about children from another planet who can fly.

This one is actually about butterflies. You can read it here.

If you want to read about children on another planet that can fly, George RR Martin has you covered.

So Turks just like to shoot with their hands in their pockets, I guess?

stephen01king ,

I think that’s just how the shooting stance works. Hooking your hand in your pocket prevents it from moving and messing with your aim.

EpeeGnome ,

They’re only allowed to use one hand, so the competitors always have their off hand tucked in or hooked onto their clothes so that arm can be relaxed and ignored.

JokeDeity ,

Got it, I’m honestly just riffing off another comment I saw a day ago that mentioned his hand in his pocket, I didn’t know they all did it. 🤣

Been loving my Framework laptop 16 - customizable with easy access to the WiFi card. Can upgrade it over time too as parts come out! Buy your own storage and RAM, cheaper than from their website.

Been daily driving it for a few months with few issues on Arch, and officially supports Fedora and Ubuntu.

cypherpunks ,
@cypherpunks@lemmy.ml avatar

It looks like Framework to only offers entry-level Radeon GPUs.

If you want to do GPU compute in a laptop and money is no object, something from Lenovo’s Legion series of gaming laptops is probably a good choice. You can get one with an RTX 4090 in it, and the series (or many models of it, at least) appears to have reasonably good Linux support. (Disclaimer: I’ve never used one.)

simple , to asklemmy in Asking for Laptop Recommendation – Offline GPU

For AI stuff you’d want something with at least an RTX 4060. AMD GPUs for laptops are not great and most of them don’t support AI. Any card that’s good for AI will also be good for gaming so you’ll be fine there.

You probably want something with 32gb of ram, too.

As for pulling out the wifi card, there’s no need. Most laptops let you disable wifi through the BIOS, completely disabling it at a system level.

Dual booting works on anything.

Generally I’d recommend Lenovo Legions, ASUS ROG stuff. If you’re rich you can also look into Razer I guess.

ghotigoat ,

AMD GPUs are much less of a hassle on Linux, though - looks like Nvidia are moving towards open sourcing their drivers soon which may make this less of an issue for op

simple ,

I’ve had zero issues with nvidia on Linux lately. It works flawlessly on newer drivers, even on wayland.

ghotigoat ,

Sweet, good to know! Always glad to see FOSS working better

BassTurd ,

Same. Probably about a month ago there was an Nvidia driver and I think Wayland update that took it from unusable on Wayland to quite stable.
