Turkey would have actually gotten a shiny platinum medal if there were no ffffffeeeeeeemales on the team.

z3rOR0ne , (edited ) to gaming in What JRPG combat is your favorite?

Xenogears for the PS1 had one of the best combat systems I’ve ever played. Tied with Star Ocean 2 for the PS1. There’s a remake which I think they overhauled the combat system, so I’m not sure if it still is as good as the first edition, but the customizability was amazing.

After that Grandia was fun, but I played it far less than the aforementioned, so have less to say. Chrono Trigger was very good for what it was, and IMHO was only matched by FF6 in that category (heavy turn based combat systems). Chrono Cross is an honorable mention in that category as well.

Lastly, very recently the Sea of Stars game had a very good combat system.

Ultimately these games have great stories, and that’s all I really cared about, but the combat systems could either make or break the monotonous grind to get to the plot points, so they had to be at least decent to make the games playable.

I highly recommend any of these games. Chrono Trigger in particular is highly regarded as possibly the greatest JRPG of all time, and personally I’d put Xenogears at 2nd place, with Star Ocean 2 at 3rd. But I might just be nostalgic.

If we talk Action JRPGs then i guess it’s Drakengard.

Protagonist power not enough? Then i summon my legendary dragon and end my turn!

(Wait no, that last thing is not true.)

I can’t say I have a favorite, but I do strongly favor anything strictly turned based. I’ve been playing Divided Reigns and its combat system is stellar imho, so there. Lots of weapon types, lots of attacks for each types, lots of skills, lots of magics. Makes non magic users at least as satisfying to use as spell casters.

PumaStoleMyBluff , to asklemmy in Have you been stolen from?

I took my bike out for a trail ride, decided to stop at home for a quick refill of water before going out again. I was in my house for under 3 minutes and my bike was stolen from my enclosed front porch.

Reported it with serial number to the police and a stolen bike website but never heard anything back.

I was in college and had to start leaving for classes 20 minutes earlier. I was pretty angry at the time. Now l’ll never leave a bike out of my sight unless it’s locked indoors or with two U-locks.

adespoton , to technology in My LibreOffice install broke and there's this Calligra software that caught my eye, should I switch or just reinstall?

Depends.

Calligra has a great interface.

I’m unsure however how it does with importing/exporting documents, and how well it works with OpenDocument formats.

LibreOffice can edit my ClarisWorks documents from 35 years ago and can also open and edit my OpenOffice documents and display them exactly as they were 19 years ago.

Lrobie , to linux in How was your experience using Linux in college?

I had a great time. I studied electrical engineering and my department had moved from using Matlab to Python which made my life a lot easier. There was one class where we had to use a Matlab library but I was able to use Octave with the library. There weren’t any other programs we had to install there weren’t compatible with Linux. A lot of classes just required a web browser, no additional software, so no issues there.

Trying out new things is always good. Best case you find new software you like, worst case you learned something new.

Sometimes limitations can foster creativity and end up with an even better workflow in the end by forcing you to reevaluate how you do the thing. Sometimes it doesn’t work out and that’s fine too but at least you didn’t pass on a potential opportunity.

Ahhh, my favourite debugging combo…

echo “<pre>”; print_r( “We are here, we are here!” ); echo “</pre>”; die();

Also fun at parties, hanging out asynchronously, is the ever popular PHP Mail to see if something ran in the background properly, or to get output.

tiefling , to nostupidquestions in Knife vs. Gun Control?

Butterfly knives only became legal in NY and MA about 4 years ago. There’s virtually zero reason to ban them other than protecting stupid people from accidentally cutting themselves

(I’m one of those stupid people)

WoahWoah OP ,

I got one of those things at a state fair when I was a little kid and set about immediately cutting myself trying to flip it open and look cool. My mom took it from me shortly thereafter. That ended the short saga of WoahWoah and the butterfly knife.

At this point, I can’t think of any reason I would want one. People that can use them well look pretty cool, but as a purposeful knife, they seem pointlessly complicated and prone to user error.

Honest question: Why does it matter if he’s a transphobe when choosing which Fediverse software to use? The software is FOSS and anyone can make their own instance. I don’t understand why his social views outside of sharing the software and protecting it from becoming proprietary matters when deciding what Fediverse software to use.

I’m not arguing my stance. I really want to understand what I might be missing.

Cyberflunk ,

When people are successful, sometimes their ideas are too. They become a sort of standard, or justified. While I speak only for myself, I think some folks feel like if this guy’s projects are successful he could use that success to oppres people. It happened to fluffy JK Rowling.
