Oh, this is so juicy!

I am playing Sword of the Samurai right now, and might have to track this down 100 years from now when I finally beat it.

*I wondered what this thing was written in, because I loved how things were rendered bit by bit on the screen. So I looked it up, and it looks like it's written in BASIC. I actually don't believe I've ever run across it myself (I am sure there's like hundreds on folks on here who already knew this and shrug). But I found this interesting blog on it with a detailed write up, some sample code, a virtual emulator, and some text-based games from the 70s. So I figured I would share the wealth, iffin' anyone was interested =P!

Ziggurat , to nostupidquestions in Why doesn't the American market provide efficient and effective health insurance like it does for car insurance?

You, don’t have any bargaining power regarding your health. Let’s say you broke a arm, a Mundane thing. You’re in pain, and would do anything to make it stop. Once they give you some morphine, you’re high and can’t take any reasonable decision.

Moreover, you can decide to thrash away a car, it happens all the time, you can’t do it with your life.

Isn't this why reverse image search exists? Some people are just assholes, but there are tools to help you find a source.

FauxPseudo , (edited ) to nostupidquestions in Why are weather apps so bad at telling you the current weather?
@FauxPseudo@lemmy.world avatar

I know any in my case. I’m in a black hole of info. The nearest weather station is over 30 miles away and it’s not remotely accurate for my location because of terrain changes between here and there. There isn’t even a weather station in my overly large and oddly shaped county.

We went so far as to contact the people in charge of weather stations to see if we could set one up in our yard and while there was some initial excitement from them they eventually ghosted us.

trolololol ,

Why not buy a cheap weather station for kids that come with Bluetooth or server? There must be one with a web page on it ready to go for the less technically inclined.

Or just ask your nerd nephew to do it for you.

The cloudflare tunnel is effectively a local reverse proxy

Create a docker network, place everything on the same docker network, then you can reach stuff by setting the tunnel at http://[container-name]

So you set the tunnel at nextcloud or jellyfin:8096 and so on

You’d think “but without a local proxy that does ssl encryption, cloudflare could read my communication” - no, if they really wanted they could read it anyway as they decrypt and reencrypt

for some reason Donald Trump doesn’t go in the category of “people named Donald” in my head. like Tom Cruise, he’s not a Tom, for a Thomas, he’s always Tom Cruise.

when I hear somebody else’s first name is donald, it doesn’t make me think of him

Ramin_HAL9001 , to linux in More Linux libertarian shitposting 🦅🇺🇸🦅

I’m a communist but I suddenly realised that American conservatives should all be hardcore Linux enthusiasts. Why is this not already the stereotype?

Libertarians and conservatives in the US demand liberty only for the already wealthy and powerful upper class, the liberty to enslave and exploit whomever and whatever they choose. They believe the ultra-wealthy have somehow earned the right to do so. On the contrary, the socialists, especially the anarchists, are opposed to unjust hierarchies, and the hierarchy created by wealthy and politically powerful classes are the most unjust of all – quite the opposite of the libertarians and conservatives.

Libertarian (Liberal) propaganda appropriates the more popular socialist ideologies while conflating liberty for only the wealthy/powerful versus liberty for all people. One can see appropriation done in the same way in the very name of the National Socialist (Nazi) party of Germany. These tactics that were used by the Nazis are still used by various American conservative and libertarian parties, who mostly align under the umbrella of the Republican Party. Just look at what the Trump cult weirdos are all saying nowadays. It is pure KKK and Nazi ideology resurrected, under a thin veil of euphemisms.

So if you take at face-value what libertarian and conservative politicians in the US say publicly about freedom, small government, civil liberties, etc., then they ought to be very enthusiastically in favor of Linux, but it is all just propaganda. They don’t care about freedom, only freedom for the elite clique of their supposed “supermen,” the wealthy elites, the freedom to exploit groups of people who they hate most — take your pick: foreigners, black people, women, gay and trans, Jews, Muslims, the “woke,” the “leftist,” etc. The libertarians and conservatives hate things that benefit society at large, because what benefits society also benefits these people they hate.

Linux is pretty authentically a community project for the good of society, and it is truly subversive to the authority of the corporations and elites. So the various libertarians and conservatives of the US recognize Linux as a threat. Only that small group of privileged, middle-class libertarians stupid enough to be duped by the wealthy elite propaganda believe that free software is aligned with their ideology.

somenonewho , to linux in Would being a Linux "power user" increase my chances of getting a job in IT/tech?

As many people here have pointed out already, it’s highly dependent on what type of Job you’re looking for and in what industry.

When I was applying for my entry level Job (actually an apprenticeship to become a sysadmin), the fact that I was a linux user (especially daily driving Arch) and that I had set up my own self hosted projects was a factor in me being set up in the department that was actually interesting to me (the Linux/Server department) instead of the Windows/Client department but I probably would have gotten the job either way. My work there set me up deeping my path into Linux sysadminship where I still am today.
