ramble81 , to linux in what is the equivalent of Windows Active Directory in Linux?

Depends on what you’re looking for? Common logins? A way of mass applying configurations and policies or to multiple computers? Way of doing centralized shared file stores?

There’s no true 1:1 in Linux, but there are multiple applications that can cover all of the functions. As one person said, LDAP, but that’s a protocol that can be served via multiple applications. Samba is one that offers an AD like system that would probably cover SoHo type needs. Things like openldap, 389 server and other can do pure directory/authentication but may not meet everything.

I’m actually kind of looking for all of this. Everything there is currently Windows, but it’s kind of hard to upgrade everything without paying money haha. I was wondering if I could do a version of Linux because as a non-profit we have a free google workspace account. It would be nice to move away from the Windows teat(especially because we have a free productivity suite in Google Docs), but that might be a hard battle to win.

ramble81 ,

I’d start by looking at Samba then. That’s probably gonna be your closest 1:1 replacement. It can even act as a domain controller for Windows systems too.

Starbuck ,

In Unix, there is a philosophy of small utilities that do their job well and are easy to integrate with each other. You don’t find one thing that does everything in Linux the same way you do with AD, but you might find something that does most of it.

I’d look at SSSD and FreeIPA, those are probably the closest you’ll get. Put in Ansible and you’ll be fine. You might also look at what Google can do on its own with ChromeOS

catloaf , to linux in what is the equivalent of Windows Active Directory in Linux?

Depends, what are you going to use it for? Just authentication? OpenLDAP if so. If you want a full AD equivalent, it’s still AD via Samba.

What are the church’s requirements?

Jayb151 OP ,

Right, so the church itself has no idea what they want/need. I’m basically doing all this set up for free, just so I can say I’ve done it. What I was really hoping for was authentication, but also group policy management and file share. Thanks for the response!

Even better to get the meat out of the picture.

Get rid of crew compartment in tank, stick cameras all over tank, replace crew with teenager with VR goggles 100 mi. away. Bill it as World of Tanks II and you probably don’t even have to pay them.

On Pope side of things, put Pope in the Vatican, and stick a hologram projector in the Popemobile. Bonus: can have multiple Popemobiles and can tune projected Pope for local audiences, like more-Asian Pope when he visits Japan, etc.

It is effective and efficient, just not for the consumer.

BearOfaTime , (edited ) to nostupidquestions in Why doesn't the American market provide efficient and effective health insurance like it does for car insurance?

Car insurance isn’t efficient nor effective. It’s a complete ripoff.

Go file a claim, see how much grief they put you through. Every claim I’ve ever made, I’ve had to file a complaint with the state insurance regulators to get my insurance company to reimburse me (and I’ve never been at fault).

Insurance is the problem for both cars and health. They artificially inflate pricing for both, because they get to determine what is paid and at what rates (especially for health care).

It’s why you hear stories of things like tylenol at the hospital being $10 a pill. Since insurance may only reimburse the hospital at 10% of the filed claim, the hospital increases the cost 10x. (It’s more complex that this, it’s why medical coding is a specific job now, finding ways to code things to get sufficiently reimbursed).

Montagge ,

I also had to get the state involved when the insurance agent just wouldn’t return my calls

Hildegarde ,

I have made two claims with my insurance and they paid without any pushback. I think that’s just your insurance company. I would highly encourage you to name and shame.

fuckwit_mcbumcrumble ,

Yeah I’ve also had 0 issues with my insurance the two times I’ve used them.

Hell when I went to a repair shop I insisted on only OEM parts and the guy there said insurance typically wouldn’t replace that part OEM. But when I asked them about it they said they were happy to keep things 100% OEM.

DBT ,

How do you file a complaint? I had frame swap that cost almost 20k a couple years ago after getting rear ended and my insurance said the diminished value was only 60 bucks. I never even cashed the check I was so pissed.

bionicjoey ,

My sister lives in British Columbia, and from what I’ve heard, they have single-payer provincial government run car insurance (in addition to health insurance like the rest of Canada). It sounds awesome.

Passerby6497 ,

Might be your company, I’ve had 3 not at fault and 1 at fault accident and I’ve never had any issues with the insurance company paying out. In fact, my insurance has always been super chill about it, and the two not at faults that involved another driver both had the opposing insurance company tried to screw around to get out of paying.

    FreeIPA

Ho shit! I never actually heard of this before, but I’m interested now. I’ve been using Fedora on my personal laptop…and have been wanting to switch to Linux on my gaming PC. I haven’t made the leap yet though as I’m not 100% comfortable being without Windows. I know dual booting is a things but I haven’t done that in a decade and would rather just have one OS on my Pc. Thanks a lot for your response!

CrimeDad , to nostupidquestions in Why doesn't the American market provide efficient and effective health insurance like it does for car insurance?

I think, from the perspective of the insurance companies, the risk is greater for insuring people’s health than their vehicles. Also, people’s lives are at stake, so it’s basically just a complicated extortion market. I don’t know I think all the pharma and healthcare industries should be nationalized and all the healthcare workers conscripted. Can’t be worse than what we have now.
