Thanks for creating this community! I must confess I wasn’t part of it on the other site because it was too active. I was however part of deliciouscompliance, which was a lot of fun.

I’m looking forward to seeing what everyone has to share. Who knows I might have some things to share, too!

Astongt615 , to gaming in Casual game recommendations?

Many roguelites could fall into this category, and are generally cheap to boot (i.e. vampire survivors).

limeaide ,

Any other games that you recommend?

Astongt615 ,

I would just look through any number of online list of “Best Swarm Survivors”. There’s dozens of different themes and tweaks from the VS formula, including boat and train varieties! I also watch the YouTube channel Never Nathaniel as he’s a pretty awesome source of both info and entertainment on the matter (as well as other games). He’s literally the only streamer I’ve watched and I couldn’t tell you why, his formula just works.

Astongt615 ,

One more that is outside of the swarm survival genre, Child of Light. Though there is a fun and endearing story that irecommend, once you get through the first 20 minutes, you can kind of just not care and enjoy the simple but interesting play style of an almost-turned-based RPG.

randon31415 , to nostupidquestions in Why does it feel like we're at a point where every social media + other digital media are making shitty decisions and falling apart?

A lot of technological flux going on right now, what with an entire generation partially trained to do WFH and job mobility that brings, the retirement of the tech-phobic boomers, the extremely tight labor market, Russian money going to “more important endevors” (which might also be why bit coin is down), and AI threatening to automate 80% of the workforce. Tech company owners are frightened and making random dumb or scared decisions because of it.

I’ve been visiting Reddit since 2006 and had an account there for nearly 17 years. I remember it before subreddits were a thing. It was for tech nerds and other associated weirdos before entering a genuinely charming period for a few years, but those days are long in the past. I’d rather try out something new with a smaller group of interesting people who are also into trying new things, and I hope this site is able to keep chugging along regardless of whatever is happening at Reddit.

ComradePupIvy , to asklemmy in Default Profile Pictures: Yes? No? Something else?
@ComradePupIvy@lemmygrad.ml avatar

I like this idea, and I would support it, I am curious though, would the default PFP be per instance or for the software at large?

CannotSleep420 OP ,

It would look for yours first, then your instance’s, then finally a software default. The linked PR only handle the first and third, however.

Daeraxa , to linux in Which office suite are you using and why

I was using LibreOffice on everything but for some unknown reason it just flat out stopped working on my machine so I installed OnlyOffice and honestly I much prefer it.

shreddy_scientist ,
@shreddy_scientist@lemmy.ml avatar

What makes you prefer OnlyOffice over LibreOffice? I like how OnlyOffice seems to decrease possible format errors, so I tend to open docs in it after putting them together in Libre.

Rain , to selfhosted in Which to host for a single user instance: lemmy or kbin (or others)?
@Rain@lemmy.ml avatar

While I quite enjoy the Interface of KBin over Lemmy. It seems Lemmy uses a lot less resources based on the “Admin Guides” for each service.

Lemmy: join-lemmy.org/docs/en/…/administration.html

KBin: codeberg.org/Kbin/kbin-core/wiki#user-content-adm…

Jamie ,
@Jamie@jamie.moe avatar

My Lemmy instance is currently occupying about 350MB of RAM, but you can round that up to 400MB. A lot less than the 4GB for KBin.Technically it’s a dual user instance now, since a friend wanted to join it and I said sure.

cyclohexane OP ,

Thanks for the info! what about storage capacity usage?

Jamie ,
@Jamie@jamie.moe avatar

After almost 24 hours, coming up on 662MB of images, and 371MB for the postegres database. Though, I could see the numbers fluctuating depending on how much stuff you’re subscribed to. I’m currently subscribed to 31 communities, most of them fairly large.

u_tamtam ,
@u_tamtam@programming.dev avatar

Damn, this is so much worse than good ol’ RSS for just following up stuff (which I imagine is the main argument to be made for a single-usee instance)

Jamie ,
@Jamie@jamie.moe avatar

The arguments for are varied. I don’t have to worry about any admins making decisions on federation, I can federate (or not) however I please. I have my own space that I can do what I want with in a familiar format, and I can make my username Jamie without it being taken.

ipkpjersi ,

Yep, making federation decisions myself is why I want to spin up my own instance at some point, and I have spare computing resources as is already lol

Jerboa. It’s pretty bad though, I wouldn’t even really call it “usable” since it crashes so much, had to just browse on Firefox on my phone.

Granary ,

I don’t think I’ve had a single crash apart from when clicking on a lemmy link

kratoz29 ,

You call it a crash, I call it a quick exit button /s

Granary ,

It is remarkably quick! Very efficient crash

OFS_Razgriz ,

Definitely some things I’m missing on jerboa. There’s no way to go to a post directly from your notification feed which is like… A crucial thing to be able to do.

justhach ,

It just started, though. I’m sure once they get over the hiccough of the influx of new users, itll run smoother.

I haven’t had any issues with crashing (so far).

This place is definitely not dead. Quite lively, in fact. I’m not sure why there being a bigger star trek community somewhere means that this one would be useless

TotoroTheGreat , to technology in What are your favorite browser extensions?
@TotoroTheGreat@beehaw.org avatar

I use Firefox. Other than Ublock Origin and Bitwarden, these are some of my favourites :

Temporary Containers is a new favourite of mine. It works just like container tabs, but the difference is that it deletes the history of that tab once it’s closed, similar to Incognito/Private instance.

Reddit Comments for Youtube - If a youtube video has been linked to reddit, then it basically gives a small box which lists all the subs the video has been linked to and shows you the comments. If you’re logged into reddit, then it will allow you to comment as well.

Keepa for Amazon. Let’s you track price history for any product, so you can see if a sale is actually a real sale or not.

Tab Session Manager - Basically lets you save tab sessions.

Enhancer for Youtube and Pockettube Subscription Manager - Gives various youtube enhancements.

Stylus - To style websites. I mainly use it to fix the youtube thumbnail and font size.
