howrar , to asklemmy in Honest question, how many of you watch the autoplaying videos on websites ?

I do, and then I forgot why I was on that website to begin with. Takes me forever to get my bearings back. I hate it.

I see people saying that ublock can get rid of those. If someone can share how, that would be awesome. My ublock only blocks ads.

glitch ,

Right click on the video under ublock select block element. A popup will show up in the bottom right where you can fine tune. If the video has a custom right click menu just do it anywhere else and in the fine tune options click select element then the video. Also make sure you use uBlock Origin.

@nek0d3r@lemmy.world avatar

I know the differences between these metrics are inconsequential because the happiness view doesn’t start at 0, but it still makes me want to shout “what the fuck are gentoo users so happy about” lol

desktop_user ,

Not needing to deal with arch users, also having nice reading time (compiling a Firefox update on a laptop)

nek0d3r ,
@nek0d3r@lemmy.world avatar

Sometimes it’s hard to tell the difference between arch and some gentoo users

whydudothatdrcrane ,

because the happiness view doesn’t start at 0

How is that so?

The_Terrible_Humbaba ,

The scale on the left doesn’t start at zero, so the difference is smaller than the size of the bars make it seem. The difference between #1 Slackware, and last spot Arch, is 0.75 points in a 0 to 10 scale, but the bar size of Slackware is about 2.5x bigger than the bar for the Arch users.

whydudothatdrcrane ,

Fair. You know these figures right out from the graph don’t you?

nek0d3r ,
@nek0d3r@lemmy.world avatar

Just to kind of demonstrate that idea, I’ve recreated the graph in Excel with the axis starting at 0. I think Excel might actually be to blame for this happening so much, its auto selection actually wanted to pick 6, gross.

https://lemmy.world/pictrs/image/b2e191ee-9fd1-4ac8-8f45-431332b8cd11.png

whydudothatdrcrane ,

This is indeed misleading. It has no numerical figures, and it wastes loads of ink and screen space. The other one is better structured as a chart. I a sorry you spent your time to demonstrate something we all know, but may be Excel has good reasons that cuts off the axis at 6.

luciferofastora ,

The axis is cut off below 6, so the difference between the columns’ size isn’t representative of the actual scale

monobot ,

Because it works and we didn’t need to change anything in the last 20 years. I don’t even think about it.

Whenever I try something else, problems come as soon as I want something that’s not default. Which is often.

So just to add some factual context here. Your Dad fought actual nazis. The people we call nazis are not actually (nor will they be) that powerful. The world thanks men like your father for their success.
The losers we call nazis today also go by many names, christians, christian nationalists, evangelicals, KKK, racists, bigots, white supremacists, dictators, etc. But the one name that actually describes who and what they are is Fascists.

deranger , to asklemmy in Looking at 2 Uninterrupted Power Sources, CST1500SUC and CST135UC2. Which should I go for?

I’ve got a similar Cyberpower 1500, it’s simulated sine wave. It’s perfect for my desktop, network gear, and NAS. Pure sine wave seems like it would obviously be better, idk how exactly, but none of my hardware seems to care about simulated sine wave. The 1500 gives me enough time to shut down the desktop and it’ll run the NAS and network gear for a few hours. If I’m full power gaming (5800X3D, 3090, big ultrawide OLED) and the power goes out, I get about 15 minutes. Batteries lasted 3 years before they needed to be replaced, that could have been due to high ambient temperatures.

TheGoldenGod OP , (edited )
@TheGoldenGod@lemmy.world avatar

Thinking of going with the 1500, despite it costing $170 vs the other one. I do want the ability to log off in a brownout. I still don’t really get sine vs simulated myself, but I’ll trust there’s a logical reason? 🤔

qprimed ,

performance metrics for power supplies (a PSU as opposed to a UPS) are calculated using the regional AC sine. anything other than a pure sine is going to make the connected PSU work harder and, eventually, marginal components may fail.

having said that, stepped square, modified square, simulated sine are generally going to be perfectly fine for virtually any consumer equipment you connect to it.

cyberpower make cheap (but halfway decent) UPS units. I have used both APC and cyberpower for years without issue.

TheGoldenGod OP ,
@TheGoldenGod@lemmy.world avatar

So I can easily get by with the simulated in my situation? I only plan on using it for my monitor, desktop, modem and router.

qprimed , (edited )

I would say yes. I have never used a pure sinewave UPS outside of a data center situation and all of those are on-line units as opposed to line-interactive anyway. I have personally never seen an issue with stepped sine UPS units on typical pro/consumer workloads.

lots of small and mid sized shoestring budget deployments make use of “economical” (but name brand) UPS units on legit sensitive equipment without fuss.

edit to add: of course, if your mains supply is absolute garbage, then a better quality can make a difference. if utility is clean and the UPS will just be doing ocassional brown/black out duty, then I would not spend more on a sinewave UPS.

TheGoldenGod OP ,
@TheGoldenGod@lemmy.world avatar

It will mainly be brownout/blackout duty, thanks for responding. 🙏

@TheGoldenGod@lemmy.world avatar

Wow, thanks so much for sharing this! It really helps to see it explained.

It sounds like the one for $109 should suffice for my situation then, right? Seeing as it’s just a desktop, essentially.

echo ,

Yes, it should be fine for your use-case. More sensitive equipment would want/need a true sin wave.

TheGoldenGod OP ,
@TheGoldenGod@lemmy.world avatar

Mind giving a few examples for what the more sensitive equipment might be? Really appreciate you answering.

Zahille7 , to asklemmy in Have you been stolen from?

When I was in middle school, I had these really cool (imo) Nike’s that were all white except for the stitching, sole, and the trim on the tongue and the inside were a bright, almost neon green. I saw them in the store at the NEX when we were visiting my brother when he graduated boot camp, and I begged my grandpa to get them for me, and he took a or of convincing and he finally broke down and got them for me. I was so happy about those things, I wore them all the time. One Friday night, when I was at some youth thing at a local roller rink that they put on every Friday night, some bastard kid stole them! I was so upset about it, I had to use the phone at the place to call my mom and tell her what happened. I had to sit around in my socks like a jackass until my mom came to get me. I was super bummed about it for a long time; tbh I still kinda am.

Then later, also in middle school, during a school event at night during the winter, my mom’s car got broken into and her purse was stolen from inside. That was very upsetting for both of us.

cashmaggot OP ,

Legitimately I grew up thinking why you can't have nice things because some asshole always swoops in and takes them from you. I always wonder who all is out here just taking this stuff? Like, you know you've gotta still cohabitate around these people. They at some point in your life gotta look you in the eyes o_o and have that heat on them.

Eh. There's gotta be some science behind it. I wonder how much is compulsive @_!?

p.s. - I have a friend who had to lie one way or another. They told me they'd say some of the stupidest lies they could so that they could get it out of their system and talk to others normally. I wonder if thieves were out here just taking pens at banks and shizz if they wouldn't feel the need to be ganking so many people's stuff.

RBWells , to asklemmy in What has been the worst church service you have ever attended?

Oh my God this brought back a memory. It was probably the time my friend invited me to their church and expected me to speak in tongues. Like wouldn’t let me leave until I was filled with the spirit and speaking in tongues. It was terrifying.

SendMePhotos ,

Can you type out a longer, detailed play-by-play so we can eat popcorn as we read it?

RBWells ,

It was so long ago, I remember being surprised that such a regular girl belonged to such a terrifying church, I guess if you grow up in it, it seems normal?

We arrived with her parents and sat towards the middle of the pews, there was the usual call and response and singing and a sort of sermon I don’t remember but then one by one the people in the audience started standing up and babbling. Then my friend did and their parents and the pastor was exhorting us that EVERYONE needed to submit and be filled with the spirit, EVERYONE!! Who, me? EVERYONE! I stood up and made some nonsense sounds and that seemed to satisfy them. I was congratulated and hugged and then there was some more churchy stuff not so crazy.

I mostly remember being scared, and also being so confused that this was “church” to my friend. My mom made us go to “church” and it was guys in robes and some singing, a sermon, some praying, a little more singing, a benediction (really pretty - “May the Lord bless you and keep you, may he make his face shine upon you and be gracious unto you”) and then walk out in an orderly fashion. Mostly really boring, not scary because I didn’t believe any of it.

But to her, “church” was this mass of people being crazy and babbling and the preacher yelling, and it never, like, coalesced into order, it was literally a pack of shouting mostly adults, who seemed convinced this was an essential sign that God was speaking directly through you.
