Supply and demand, pandemic, chip shortage, scalpers. That pretty much covers it.

tvcvt , to selfhosted in OPNsense virtualization

Hey, as others have said, you can definitely set up OPNSense in a VM and it works great. I wanted to take a second and answer the first part of your question: it cannot run in Docker. Containers in Docker share their kernel with the Linux host machine. Since OPNSense isn’t a Linux distribution (it’s based on FreeBSD), it can’t make use of the shared Linux kernel.

syklone , to linux in Why is Linux so frustrating for some people?

When I was still a Linux noob I used to want to do all of the cool customizations and would often end up rendering the operating system unusable. Eventually I just switched to KDE whoch has a lot of customization built in. Some distros make it harder to shoot yourself in the foot, but I think being able to customize and run the latest software out of the box makes a huge difference.

Sugar. People don’t realize how bad it is for you and how addictive it is.

Zeth0s ,

Sugar is not bad. Abuse of sugar is bad. Sugar is absolutely fine, as long as one doesn’t exceed. Problem is that in American-inspired diets sugar is everywhere at gigantic doses

speaker_hat ,

Do basic groceries abuse sugar? And I’m not talking about the “organic” ones

Nioxic ,

Sugar does nothing good and its 100% konessential for the human body. You dont need to eat a single carb.

And that includes fiber, which is also a carb.

Zeth0s ,

Good luck with your digestion if you don’t eat fibers… Your gut flora must live a miserable life :(

knobbysideup ,

I’d go with high fructose corn syrup

UhBell ,
@UhBell@lemmy.world avatar

Fructose is typically fine when it’s paired with equal amounts of glucose, like in fruit. Your body has a really hard time processing high concentrations of fructose alone, which is how most sugary food is produced now a days since high fructose is a much cheaper method of sweetening food than a balanced mix of sugars.

I love Proton but I don’t use their password manager because I use Proton for email (and calendar, and VPN, and cloud storage). If my email gets compromised somehow, I don’t want my password manager compromised too.

a_spooky_specter ,

I use protonpass for alias email and bitwarden for passwords.

goodhunter ,

Why not simplelogin integration in Bitwarden? The first comes as part of your assuming proton unlimited package

Trapping5341 ,

Just got an email from proton today about their “lifetime deal” for proton pass I currently use bitwarden and Firefox relay but I’ve been debating trying to drop my Gmail account and switch everything to my proton account. Thinking it would be silly to pay Firefox $12 a year just for relay when I can get that and more from proton for the same price.

All of that to say how exactly does the email alias work and can I set a custom email subdomain to just have an alias get created whenever an email is sent to the email I give someone without me having to go manually create it?

fubo , to asklemmy in Every generation has some product/ingredient that they didn’t know was dangerous at the time: tobacco, lead, asbestos, etc. What is that item for this generation?

Perfluoroalkyls aka PFAS appear to screw with all manner of body functions.

Since you mention tobacco: It’s worth noting that the smoking/cancer connection was noticed long before peak cigarette smoking in the population. Prior to WWII, lung cancer was considered a rare disease. That changed with the mass marketing of cigarettes.

WagnasT ,

There’s a couple studies showing that even though your body can’t process and remove PFAS and it just keeps accumulating, if you donate blood regularly you reduce the amount in your body by a bit each time. There are other slight health benefits to donating blood and lots of places will pay you for it. So if you can reduce your PFAS intake and donate blood you can slowly get rid of it. I use arch linux btw.

Plastic. Its in your blood ffs

keenanpepper ,

This may be true but I hate the practice of referring to “plastic” as if it’s a single substance. It’s a bunch of different materials that don’t really have that much in common with each other, especially from a health/toxicity standpoint.

For example, people treat it as common sense that “you shouldn’t burn plastic” because the smoke is “toxic”. For PVC this is totally true, it makes very nasty stuff like dioxin that will poison you. But on the other hand you can burn polyethylene (think milk jug) and it’s no more toxic than burning a candle. Definitely way healthier to breath than wood campfire smoke, for example.

There’s also such a silly pattern where people learn some chemical might have some effect on the body and suddenly everyone is up in arms about it. For example Bisphenol A in many applications was replaced by the very similar Bisphenol S just so things could be labeled “BPA Free”. BPS probably has similar estrogenic effects to BPA.

I’d say the moral of the story is be wary of received wisdom about chemical toxicity from people who aren’t chemists.

erogenouswarzone ,
@erogenouswarzone@lemmy.ml avatar

Not only BPAs but many chemicals like BPAs can cause birth defects because our bodies think they are estrogen.

If this worries you, read the books It Starts With the Egg and Grain Brain.

They both suggest that not only what you eat, but how it’s prepared can affect the health of a child.

For instance it’s a big no-no, according to It Starts With the Egg, to heat most plastics in the microwave. The heat breaks the plastic down, it can get in your blood, your body will think it’s estrogen, and they don’t even know the full effects of this yet.

So think about

  • burritos in plastic wrapping,
  • cling wrap on a bowl,
  • reheating leftovers in Tupperware,
  • disposable cutlery

These chemicals are not just in food:

  • your car’s interior
  • your cell phone case
  • even the clothes on your back, unless they’re 100% pure, untreated, natural fabric, may have been made with these chemicals.

League of Legends. I used to enjoy playing it but could only do so many games before I got sick of the angsty teenagers

supertinkers , to technology in Bitwarden or Proton Pass

I subscribe to both services, and each has its own unique advantages. Proton’s ability to generate disposable email addresses for questionable or bothersome websites is a standout feature that makes it worth the investment. Additionally, Bitwarden’s thorough third-party audit instills confidence, and its excellent autofill functionality coupled with the option to self-host data is highly appealing. Moreover, the ability to unlock your vault using a YubiKey adds an extra layer of security to Bitwarden. While Proton shows promise and has great potential.

Social media. It wasn’t until very recently that people started to realize just how harmful it actually is.

thesprongler , (edited ) to nostupidquestions in Why do most gaming laptops have vents on the bottom?

Because despite their name, laptops are meant to be placed on a hard flat surface when in use - NOT on your lap, a pillow, etc. They have little rubber feet that allow just enough room for the hot air to escape, and when placed on your lap the air gets trapped. Manufacturers warn about the effects of the hot air on your lap for extended periods of time.

@Generator@lemmy.pt avatar

I only use PiHole for a couple of months, it wasn’t easy to setup something that worked on my LAN and over internet. Initially I used OpenVPN but was hard to use it with profiles to identify the devices.

Than a tried AdGuard Home, and use it with DoH/DoT server was very simple, and can easily use any profile for each device on LAN or DoH/DoT server.
Can easily search logs and block/allow for each device.

Give it a try, and use it for a couple days.
