It’s a great book for sure. Two things I really liked are

spoilerI haven’t read a good alien contact book in a long time, so I really enjoyed that part. Also, the whole arc of “I must have been convinced to do the right thing because I’m here - I guess I’m a good guy, and Rocky did the same.” Was really powerful.

And, of course, Weir does a really good job with hard SF, keeping things anchored and believable.

capybeby OP ,

Yes I loved that arc! I loved that he does prove it true in the end.

flyingjake , to books in Just read Project Hail Mary

I enjoyed it, I read the Martian before it got big and turned into a movie. I thought it might be a one hit wonder when Hail Mary came out and was prepared for disappointed but I ended up enjoying it quite a bit.

For me it was follow liberally and go down the rabbit holes of peoples reblogs to find more.

You can always unfollow later if they suck.

I teared up big time at the end when Grace realizes what’s happened to the astrophage and has to make that discission. Easily an all time favorite.

SirEDCaLot , to nostupidquestions in New moderator needed! [META]

I’d be interested. I have experience moderating Reddit communities (I’m /u/SirEDCaLot over there too).

I’m Eastern time. But I can’t commit to any specific amount of availability for two reasons. 1. My real life is pretty hectic and many days I literally have no time at all to participate let alone moderate, and 2. Lemmy/Reddit for me is a hobby, not a job, and I have no desire to change that. So my availability is ‘when I have time and feel like doing it’. Sometimes that will mean I disappear for days, sometimes that means I’m on for multiple hours per day.

What I will say though- is that whatever I do have time to do, I will do well. I believe in treating users with respect, even when they break seemingly simple rules. I’ve found that if you don’t assume bad faith and treat people with respect, even when they appear to be idiots, more often than not they return the gesture.
I also believe that moderators are more like janitors than gods. So I’m not interested in ‘power’.

Thanks for your input! To be able to moderate this community on our instance, you’d need to be on our instance, haha. If you ever feel like you could help or have the (mostly) consistent time in the future, then feel free to reach out.

Making an account is easy. Consistent time, not so much. Heh.

z3n0x , to books in How do you decide when to give up on a book?
@z3n0x@feddit.de avatar

Either I’m hooked from the first sentence or I’ll never be. Simple as that.

Andjhostet ,

This seems absolutely absurd to me. Some of my favorite books of all time took a good 20 or so pages to get into. In fact, I don't know if there's any book I've been hooked from the first sentence.

flyingjake , to mildlyinfuriating in A friend of mine says they don’t wanna “yuck my yum” whenever they’re about to trash something I like and it infuriates me, mildly

While I’m definitely one to get mildly irritated at the phrasing (and am even more irritated by “fur babies” lol), I’m really bothered by people excusing their own rudeness - right up there with saying “no offense” right before being deliberately offensive. Like if you don’t want to yuck my yum or cause offense then why are you about to do it anyway?

scottmeme ,

What about “skin dogs”

CmdrShepard ,

Is that like the reverse of the above, used on human children?

scottmeme ,

Exactly

Jerkface ,

Between the lines of “I don’t want to” reads “I have to”, which is easily disputed if said out loud.

livus ,
@livus@kbin.social avatar

Yeah I agree! I usually interrupt with "offense taken" before they get through their sentence.

Either say it or don't, but lets not pretend the disclaimer does anything other than act as a mild spoiler that they are about to say something edgy.

intensely_human ,

The reason I say “no offense” is to indicate to you that my intention is something other than offending you.

For example “no offense but your breath stinks. We should stop and get some mouthwash before we get to the party”

I’m not saying that to make a person feel bad, though they will likely feel bad after I say it. I’m saying it to help them.

I’m autistic, man. If the autistic kid can figure this stuff out so can you. No offense, but maybe you should consider things you don’t understand more deeply before tossing them in the waste bin.

flyingjake ,

Thanks for your comment, certainly there are people like yourself who mean those words earnestly to convey a delicate point. I also imagine that comes out in your demeanor and character when you are saying that to someone.

Unfortunately, in my experience, many people say it without any sense of empathy or compassion at all despite the literal meaning. 😕

intensely_human ,

I think people misinterpret it more than people use it as a cover for being mean.

questionable naming schemes

Yes, because no one wants to have problems with someone’s trademark, since that would foce them to change app name.

Easiest way to avoid this is using strange name.

itsnotlupus , to mildlyinfuriating in A friend of mine says they don’t wanna “yuck my yum” whenever they’re about to trash something I like and it infuriates me, mildly

“I’m not X but <position statement that clearly requires them to be X” and “I don’t want to Y but <proceeds to do exactly Y>” are used by people that mistakenly believe a disclaimer provides instant absolution.

On the other hand, I’ve never had anybody threaten to yuck my yum in exactly those terms, and I’m slightly intrigued by the prospect.

RotaryKeyboard , to piracy in Next Steps for a Beginner Plex Setup? Where to Upgrade First

The first thing you should do is get a dedicated server for your plex server software. I recommend the NVidia Shield Pro as your first Plex server host because it has excellent hardware transcoding capabilities. If you don’t want to buy the shield, you could get a larger server with a processor that has integrated graphics capabilities. Installing plex on that will actually give you a few more features and probably better transcoding capabilities, but it would be significantly more expensive.

After that, I’d get a Plex pass to unlock a lot of the good Plex features.

VentraSqwal OP ,

Thanks! That’s a good actionable next step. I’ll have to look into what benefits Plex pass gives, too.

TotallyTerry ,

As much as I love my Shield Pro, I just recently had to switch to an actual dedicated device for streaming. The shield pro is showing its age and could not keep up with transcoding and I had nothing but issues with the server being available. I switched to a pretty cheap mini pc with an Intel N100 (Intel sync allows for quick and power efficient transcoding). It’s been night and day in terms of performance.

VentraSqwal OP ,

Was it cheaper than $200? That’s one draw of the Nvidia Shield and Raspberry Pi other people in this thread have mentioned. Although I’m sure they’re less powerful.

When do you need transcoding?

CmdrShepard ,

You can get an old Optiplex micro PC (Optiplex 3060 Micro for example) for around $100 or so online for the time being. The drawback with these, a NUC, and the Shield is that there’s nowhere to store HDDs and you’re forced to use USB rather than SATA. As your collection grows you’ll almost certainly want a larger case to house multiple HDDs rather than having 10 external drives cluttering your space.

I went with a Fractal Design Define R6 for mine which can hold 12ish 3.5" drives in a relatively small footprint.

Also if you want to try Jellyfin you can run it alongside Plex. You don’t have to choose one or the other. I’ve been running Plex and Emby (what Jellyfin was forked off of) for years and both work fine but Plex is more feature rich (with the Plex pass)
