Look up any model you are considering on the following websites and if it’s listed it should tell you everything you need to know about Linux support. I’d say you’d be safe with most laptops these days though.

I’d love to see a movie as well!

dan1101 , to linux in Why is Linux so frustrating for some people?
@dan1101@lemmy.world avatar

It’s like so many other things, it’s simple when you know it well but when you don’t have a lot of experience it’s very daunting. A lot depends on understanding the file system, like what is the difference between /run and /media and / and /root? So much is command line with some pretty arcane commands and parameters. And not knowing what tools there are to help, and not knowing how to fix things when they break.

eshep ,

@dan1101 @leninmummy I love the use of "arcane" in place of "archaic" ...brilliant!

dan1101 ,
@dan1101@lemmy.world avatar

arcane: understood by few; mysterious or secret

archaic: very old or old-fashioned

I did mean arcane but archaic could fit too. I don’t really have a problem with old as long as it’s good, but not that many people out of general population understand what Linux commands there are and how to fully utilize them.

eshep ,

@dan1101 I figured it was used with that meaning. It just gave me a chuckle cause I initially read it with its darker meaning. ;)

For any linux distro you can search and find the answer.

Tell me for what Windows “distro” you can do the same?

JGWentworth ,

Uhhhh… Every single one. You can easily Google it, and chances are you will find a forum post about it somewhere because everyone uses Windows. Windows even has a multi billion dollar international company providing 24/7 support for it, for free. If you have a problem with Linux, good fucking luck finding help with it.

Chances are I can’t find the Windows 10 kernel source code on github.

Prove me wrong.

rivalary ,

I get what you’re saying; a good portion of the issues you encounter on Windows aren’t solvable as they are in the design or you have to wait for Microsoft to fix the issues, if they ever do. A lot of the design isn’t even for the customer, it’s for the advertisers or other interests. That said, you’re coming off pretty aggressive and I don’t think you’ll get many to consider your argument when brought forth in such a manner.

KIM_JONG_JUICEBOX ,
@KIM_JONG_JUICEBOX@lemmy.ml avatar

That said, you’re coming off pretty aggressive

This person I am responding to has no idea what a kernel is. That said, he or she should not be giving some questionably authoritative answer (which is clearly wrong.)

So are you going to post that Windows kernel source code? I’ll hold my breath.

With very rare exceptions, fostering is hard AF. It’s hard on you, it’s hard on your kids, it hard on your family, it’s hard on the fosters. YSaK that there is a disorder called Reactive Attachment Disorder where kids will lie, cheat, steal when they feel like they’re getting emotionally invested in the new family arrangement to sabotage the situation. There’s a lot of stuff they don’t tell you when you enter the system to try to help.

Yeah, very good book, I loved it. I’m usually not into optimistic sci-fi, but Weir’s books are comfortably heartwarming even for jaded ol’ me and pretty smart too. Not to mention that his language is very lively so you don’t get bored for a second, it’s fast-paced and to the point. And I have a special affinity for interspecies friendships ever since I read The Great Guignol of the Surrealists by Robert Sheckley where the main character was human and his closest friend and colleague was a essentially a big crab, there is something affirming in this very idea.

Holodeck_Moriarty , to steam in How can I bind the buttons on a Logitech joystick to steam games?

I haven’t done this in a while, but you might want to check out the community controller configs. I had a 3rd party controller with a few buttons that steam couldn’t detect, but someone had uploaded a config that worked perfectly for it.

I loved it too. It got me out of a really long reading funk.

Sure, it’s kind of hand-wavey in parts, and the science doesn’t always make sense, but it’s just so damn fun. I thought the character of Rocky never fell into tropes, and it was great how much personality and humor we get out of him.

Weir is definitely hit or miss from novel to novel, but when he hits he knocks it out of the park.

Where do you fall on the “fur children” way of describing certain pets? I feel like this falls into a vaguely similar group of mannerisms that probably mildly infuriate a number of folks.

Sockks ,

Fur children, fur parents annoy me to no end

dirkle ,

I have a cat. He is a pet. Not a fur baby or child. I am not a cat. He’s too old to be a baby. Young cats are kittens, not babies. I also very dislike doggos and kiddos.

Not sure why I wrote all that like a four year old. Maybe because that’s how I view the intelligence level of those that feel the need to use that kind of language.

HeyThisIsntTheYMCA ,

I have a cat. He’s the first cat I’d call a fur baby because he whines like a, um, fur baby.

LillianVS ,
@LillianVS@lemmy.world avatar

Admittedly, I too say it unironically. When my cat asks for cuddles, demands to be picked up and hugged. I have every right to call him a fur baby. He definitely acts like one. That and just “kid” because he is definitely a kid. It also sounds close to the ukrainian word for cat so it’s kind of perfect

Zagone ,

My wife has a 14-yr-old cat that she refers to as “my old man baby”. The cat’s mannerisms and age fit the name. That said, the phrase weirdly straddles a few categories in this discussion.

@sputtersalt@lemmy.world avatar

are you upset about the phrase “yuck my yum” or them trashing your food, period? I mean both are mildly infuriating to me but I’m curious

edit: added much-needed comma.

Also, I’ve only ever heard this in the context of food (hence the “yum”) but I see it’s also used for other things? Which is awful, because “yum” should absolutely never refer to anything other than food

Sadly, your story is not an uncommon one where the foster parents do their very best, but the foster child ends up creating a toxic environment. You did the best you could, OP. DrQuint , (edited ) to nostupidquestions in Where did all this reddit hatred come from?

I have disliked the direction of reddit ever since they made the new interface and removed css rules from subs. It was the first time, of many, that I saw reddit take something from the community and screw it up, all just to make the website more boring. It was especially annoying in that it removed text flairs from support and marketplace subs and forced people to come up with external systems.

They did it more often. Things like Reddit Gold were not first made by reddit, did you know? The whole API thing is just the concrete slab that pulverized the camel all the way to hell. Of all the things they took or took away, taking away the app I was using since years before they even made one was just too much. I can go from passively disliking them to actively hating them.

Plus, what ideas did they actually have that was original or good? “Hey guys, we stole Facebook’s chat”. “Hey guys, we added crypto”. The community makes bots that mediate debates, convert video format or do reminders, meanwhile reddit busies itself by ruining the Relevant option on its already bad search and then fucks off while stating “eh, you fucking degenerate nerds use site:reddit.com anyways”

Turkey_Titty_city ,

reddit's whole api used to be open and any user could run scripts with a bit of php. it was incredibly fun and interesting.

I’ve dropped books for being boring, poor dialogue, incosistency, basically anything that majorly breaks my immersion. I was reading the newest book is Andrew Rowe’s Arcane Ascension series, which I had loved up this point, and got to ch. 18 where he breaks all the rules of story writing and character development to basically go on a IRL political rant. I still havent picked that book back up.
