vrighter , to books in Just read Project Hail Mary

I loved it. Ended up reading it in a single sitting. Very great read.

Yuki , to cat in is sit/stay a mean trick to teach a cat?

Dude, just love your cat and he’ll love you back. I taught my cat the meaning of “food”. As in, even I say FOOD?! he comes sprinting in hope for food. Same goes for when I say OUTSIDE?! he knows what it means and sprints to the door.

You can definitely learn them things and they will also love you unconditionally!

sorry i just get worried cause ive never had a cat or even a dog before. this is my first ever pet and its scary!

Aux ,

Don’t hurt your cat and everything else will be fine.

Linssiili ,

I recommend binge-watching Jackson Galaxy on youtube, he helped me immensively to understand my first cat. He also has videos for pretty much all issues one might have with a cat.

ThayWizGwar ,
@ThayWizGwar@lemmy.world avatar

I second Jackson Galaxy. I learn something from every video.

I’ll check it out, thank you.

Hjulkula , to linux in Why is Linux so frustrating for some people?

I put Linux Mint on my grandmothers old computer because the hardware was preventing it from upgrading from Windows 7 without massive slowdown. Back when she was using windows (albeit windows 7) she would call me every week with a new issue. Since installing mint she very rarely has issues and whatever issues she does run into can usually be solved very easily over the phone. I would say that Linux is what you make it. If you want to copy and paste commands from sketchy guides, things are going to break. But if you just use it like my grandmother does, browsing the web and writing emails, nothing can really go wrong

hungryish ,

I did the same on an old macbook. I basically use it as a chromebook now which is fine. It’s old enough that it couldn’t be a workhorse anyway. Even OSX was chugging but Mint runs great (now that it’s all set up).

blastofffox , to selfhosted in ELI5: Why are SBCs nowhere to be found?

Last month it was hard to find these in India, but since few days RPIs are back in stock, got a couple of Pi4s (75$ each) and Zero 2 Ws (20$ each) for myself. Checked now, they are still in stock.

kedarkhand ,

which site did you use to purchase those?

blastofffox ,

Bought RPi 4Bs (4GB) from thingbits and Zero 2 Ws from silverlineelectronics

PinkPanther , to nostupidquestions in Where did all this reddit hatred come from?

We’re still discussing Reddit? That’s so 2.5 weeks old 😝 moved here because of spaz’ rule, not because I hate Reddit. It was a fun time which will be remembered.

NightOwl ,

It’s time to hate the looming threat of the colossus that meta now setting eyes on gobbling up the guppies. It makes reddit stuff look so trivial in comparison.

JoeClu , to books in How do you decide when to give up on a book?
@JoeClu@lemmy.world avatar

I’ll give it 100 pages. If I find I’m not excited to read it the next night, I’ll drop it. Too many books to waste time on something not resonating with you. If a book is good, it’ll happen before you have finished 100 pages. If the “good parts” only happen after the first 100 pages, I’ll drop it. Life’s too short.

sixty , to technology in Bitwarden or Proton Pass

I have all things in Proton except password manager. I’m already using Bitwarden, and I don’t think keeping all your eggs in one basket is a good idea. That and I don’t want to support it, as Proton should be focusing on improving their existing products instead of creating new ones.

LonelyWendigo ,

Passwords are keys, not eggs. You wouldn’t hide your house keys all over town, you’d keep them on your key ring and maybe give a spare to a single trusted person that explicitly would not be carrying it around town exposing your key to the risk of theft.

sixty ,

Eggs are pretty nutritious though (superfood alert), and you can bet your bottom dollar that I would be sharing all my eggs with the townsfolk. You know, as a learning experience, to teach about their worth.

kite , to nostupidquestions in How do you choose an instance and does that have a significant effect on your Lemmy experience?

I’ve jumped around a lot after paying attention to other folks’ instances and looking into ones that sound interesting in some way. As I’ve gotten more familiar with the fediverse concept and what’s out there, I’ve hopped instances. I’m not a heavy user, so it takes a little time, but I’m definitely a little bit more satisfied after every jump. I actually just moved to kbin.social tonight, but haven’t changed my login on this app yet. Swapped Mastodon servers, too, ended up at vmst.io. First one I actually found multiple things I was interested in following.

Yes, and they can even play different characters with their own personalities to keep things seeming normal for longer

Muspell , to selfhosted in Pihole vs AdGuard Home

Does AdGuard Home have proper IPv6 support meanwhile? I remember the lack thereof made me switch back to pi-hole a few years ago.

mea_rah ,

Yes, no problem with IPv6.

gabriell , to unixporn in Are there more themes that support a plethora of apps?

You can try Rose Pine.

breakfastmtn , to nostupidquestions in How do you choose an instance and does that have a significant effect on your Lemmy experience?
@breakfastmtn@geddit.social avatar

I chose my instance because of the admin (Stux). Basically, I knew that I could trust that it would be well run and have great moderation standards. It’s a small server for now and pretty sleepy. Most of my subscriptions are from lemmy.world and a few other larger servers but it doesn’t matter. I guess “local” might be less useful but that doesn’t bother me. I can say that, over the two weeks I’ve been here, I haven’t experienced any sort of performance issues or downtime.

The one case where I could see it being important is creating new communities – it’s probably more likely to have one take off on a larger server.

Crackhappy , to nostupidquestions in Where did all this reddit hatred come from?
