Pixel Fold!

It’s everything I need in a foldable with the sweet sweet software from Pixel.

Only thing that sucks is the cost. Definitely for the enthusiast

IthronMorn ,

I have the z fold. How do you think it compares?

dub ,

So to be honest a lot of it might stem from the fact that I was on Samsung software for so long I was getting kind of annoyed at all the little glitches and hiccups. In a very cohesive environment and especially having this kind of fold software it always felt like a beta thing.

Or with the pixel feels like there’s much more of a enhanced almost iPhone like experience with the full. I can grant that there is less maybe functionality in terms of multitasking and stuff but I really use those features so rarely that I don’t miss them

Dad and coupled with the front form factor that’s so much better for me and that I can actually take really nice photos and have all the nice little pixel features, its a no brainer for me

IthronMorn ,

Do apps play better on the unfolded screen? I’ve noticed that some apps hate the aspect ratio of the fold and refuse to display nicely even with samsung labs tweaks (looking at you spotify).

dub ,

so i havent had many apps that didnt play nice. but i dont use too many apps like instagram or anything. the worse culprit ive had is tik tok but then all you need to do is rotate the screen and it mostly solves that issue

Reassuring to see the love for Swype in here. I’m still using Swype on Android. I’ve tried many other keyboards, gboard comes closest but still lacks some of the quality of life little features from Swype.

is it really running crypto in the back ground. When I head people say that I hear it runs some crypto mining in the background

TheButtonJustSpins OP ,

No. You can opt into watching ads for their BAT crypto, but you can also just turn all of that off and have an awesome ad-free browser.

I consider their past behavior to be counter to their stated goal of privacy, and counter to the notion that they deserve to be trusted.

They have sent out direct mailers that basically equated to a customer list leak; also I’d take a peek at the wikipedia entry about their business model, which mentions some stuff that isn’t the most savory:

… Brave earns revenue from ads by taking a 15% cut of publisher ads and a 30% cut of user ads. User ads are notification-style pop-ups, while publisher ads are viewed on or in association with publisher content.

On 6 June 2020, a Twitter user pointed out that Brave inserts affiliate referral codes when users navigate to Binance

In regards to the mailers, they messed up and passed blame,

In this process, our EDDM vendor made a significant mistake by not excluding names, but instead including names before addresses, resulting in the distribution of personalized mailers.

With regards to the CEO, he made a donation to an anti-LGBT cause when he was CEO of Mozilla in 2008. He lost his job at Mozilla due to his anti-LGBT stance. He also spreads COVID misinformation.

As others have pointed out, it’s also Chromium based, and so it is just helping Google destroy the web more than they already have.

buckykat ,

It’s not crypto mining, because crypto mining is basically worthless on consumer hardware now. What it does is run its own ads and pay you for enduring them and being spied upon by them in its own cryptocurrency.

shotgun_crab , to linux in What is your go-to Linux distro and why?

If I had to choose, I’d go with openSUSE Tumbleweed. It’s a solid distro overall. Arch, Debian and Mint are close though! I’ve been thinking to check out NixOS and Garuda for a while, but I haven’t had the time for that yet.

A Samsung Galaxy A50, it’s my beloved treasure! It was my first phone that I bought with part of my own saved money.

It’s pretty usable, to this day. It runs Android 11 but only recently got axed for security updates, so I may get a new phone soon. There’s really nothing not to love about it.

The battery has deteriorated though, I can barely get 4-5 hours SOT without using 80-90% of the battery. Also, the adhesive that holds the back plastic panel to the phone keeps coming apart so it doesn’t hold anymore, which is kinda nasty. I’ve re-applied back panel adhesive two times but it keeps happening, presumably due to heat. Never seen this happen to any phone other than the A50.

static09 , to linux in Why is snaps hated

Short answer: Canonical is strong arming Ubuntu flavors into removing support for alternatives to snap (that run better and do the same thing). These types of decisions are generally worse for the overall Linux community.

Right now, a part of the Linux and Open Source communities are distancing themselves from corporate-sponsored projects given issues we’ve recently seen with RedHat’s CentOS and Canonical’s decisions with Snap and LXD

pieceofcrazy , to showerthoughts in In Latin pop all songs are beach/summer songs.

I live in Italy and don’t really give much attention to latin poo songs, but it sure feels like it.

I have to say though that those are probably the ones that get here. I don’t think that in Latin America there’s no poo music for the rest of the year.

EDIT: obviously pop, not poo. I’m leaving the typo because it’s funny. EDIT 2: GODDAMMIT I wrote poo TWO TIMES? What’s wrong with my fingers?

I don’t use swiping motions to type, at most I’ve used it a few times over the years.

m15otw , to ukcasual in Thursday complaints

Yesterday (Thursday) I spent the day shifting stuff out of the garage (about to be knocked down) into a self store. The room we’ve got there is up some steps.

After a long day, I dropped a heavy thing on my foot. Felt like a fool, and also in amazing pain. Took my sock off there sat on/in the car boot to have a look (gross is all I’ll say). That’s all my race training postponed for a week at least (supposed to be Triathloning).

Then had to hulk the rest of the stuff up the stairs and finish up, because it was just me! Luckily that was the last car load.

Learned my lesson, next time I’m bringing a friend. And possibly steel capped boots.

Samsung A53 5G
It cost a whole lot less than the flagship phones, and for me, it works great. I’ve had it for over a year and it’s always been very fast and responsive, great battery life, and I like the fact that it still has a microSD card slot.

I would say i never considered Debian seriously, but after learning a bit more about it the perspective of a highly stable / not buggy OS on which i can easily switch between DEs , and without snaps really tingles me.

wildbus8979 ,

And if you want rolling release, Testing is a pretty decent experience, just be mindful that security updates come a little slower.

noro_lim_asfaloth ,

IMHO, Debian is not the best choice for KDE, especially if you are on Wayland. KDE is a bit more buggy than GNOME, but bugs are fixed constantly at a fast pace, and Wayland support gets better. With Debian, you are stuck with the old version and have to wait 2 years for bugfixes. Kubuntu would be a better pick since it has interim releases with more recent KDE and also official backports with fresher KDE version.

wildbus8979 , (edited )

Yes testing is probably better for KDE, it’s great on workstations if you want a rolling release.

Not generic as Docker containers, not native as package managers. If I’m trusting an app to install it, then I don’t want to care about security rules.

Galaxy Note 20 Ultra

With the exception of a headphone jack, this phone is the last Samsung “flagship” to have “everything.” MicroSD card is a critical feature for me, and until Samsung brings it back in their upcoming flagships, I’m eyeing the Sony Xperia I V, although this device is still chugging along fine. A few slowdowns every now and then, but quite manageable.
