Firefox because it’s one of the last browsers against the Chromium monopoly.

Also UBlock Origin is wayy better on Firefox, even before Google forced their version of Manifest v3 on all Chromium based browsers.

How is that working for you? I am thinking of switching in my quest to get out of google stuff

AnagrammadiCodeina ,

Not op but I’m using DDG since many years and I feel like is continuously improving.

In case you miss google or you need a different search you can simply add !g to the search and search on google from DDG (it opens a google page)

Giants: Citizen Kabuto

It was a kinda janky 3D Action Adventure from around 2000. Back then it had really beautiful and colorful graphics. I remember playing it on my first “real” PC and being amazed by how it looked.

It also stands out to me for being actually funny and comitting to being a comedy game.

Opteryx ,

I loved this game! The humour was my favourite part - very dry and very British. A fun shooter with a lot of variety. Amazing soundtrack by Jeremy Soule. I found the game very difficult, though - I doubt I ever got close to finishing it. How about you?

Your best option to avoid unnecessary data collection is to just use a FOSS server. Paper (Github) is a pretty good one imo. It’s also super lightweight and has some really good performance tweaks.

Thank you for resources?

Noob question: How would I go about vetting the links/downloads?

Also, how do I safely download from these sites? I’ve been using a VPN (mullvad) for a couple years now, but is that enough?

I’m pretty tech savvy but I have never needed to download, but I just don’t want to install origin, Uplay, EA, or any other launcher to play a single player game and tbh I don’t want to support those companies at all

DudePluto ,

Also, how do I safely download from these sites?

I thought there was a mirror on lemmy for r/piracy’s spectacular megathread but I don’t see it. Rough guides from a semi-noob:

Direct download:

  1. TOR with Ublock Origin add-on
  2. After downloading your file, upload it to virustotal.com and scan it. If it passes you’re probably pretty safe.

Torrent:

  1. Find and copy your file magnet in TOR.
  2. Turn on VPN.
  3. Open qbittorrent with your connection bound to your VPN’s network.
  4. Paste your magnet link when it prompts you and download.
  5. Once it’s done downloading, upload it to virustotal to scan it.
Akasazh ,
@Akasazh@lemmy.ml avatar

Why could you not just find the magnet link with VPN on? Just trying to understand why that should be done via TOR

DudePluto ,

There’s controversy over whether VPN + TOR is a good combo. Some say it’s an added layer of anonymity, others say it could be decreasing anonymity because your VPN could be logging your traffic. Some also say the two don’t mesh well. But honestly the juries out so everyone should probably come to their own conclusion

notacat ,

I’ve just always been of the mindset that pirating is so low on the feds radar that even if a VPN is tracking or even if they’re a honeypot it’s not like the government agencies are going to expose that by coming after some low level pirate. That said I’m not super active anymore and I always look for VPN’s who at least claim to not track.

Xer0 , to gaming in What do you game on?

PS5 mainly. I do have a gaming pc but at the moment I’m just casual gaming on the sofa when I have time. I love the PS5, I think it’s the best Sony console since the PS2.

limeaide ,

Oh wow that’s a bold statement. Personally i think the PS3 is better than the PS2 though. The move to online and HD graphics (for the average consumer) was huge. I know it had been a thing for a while, but that’s when it became mainstream

How come you’re such a big fan of the PS5? Is the game selection as good as the PS2?

Xer0 ,

Thought that would be a controversial opinion lol.

So purely from a console perspective, taking pc out of the equation completely. The PS3 game selection was severely lacking. It was a good console and the graphical jump was awesome, but the number of games I actually had was hardly any.

PS4 was fantastic in most ways, but a lot of the games I found really pushed the hardware which resulted in the console sounding like it was going to take off, becoming overheated etc.

The pros of the PS5 for me include the SSD, which makes such a huge difference to the speed of the console. Things like switching games is a breeze. The adaptive triggers are really good when implemented into games. The graphics are fantastic. I know many people don’t see a difference, but with a 4K tv games like the newest Ratchett and Clank look phenomenal. So much more can be done with physics and effects that the game actually blew me away with what it pulled off.

People say there aren’t many games but I’ve played and loved so many PS5 games including the two Spiderman games, Demons souls remake, Ratchett and Clank, FF7 remake, Hogwarts, and quite a few more.

The console is fast, simple to use, the games I’ve played have looked gorgeous in every way, and I’m seriously excited to see what else gets released now that companies are stopping PS4 and 5 versions and just purely developing for current gen.

maegul , to fediverse in Which Fediverse software would you recommend for long-form blog posts or photo hosting?
@maegul@lemmy.ml avatar

So, lemmy is an option for running a blog. See it mentioned in the documentation here: join-lemmy.org/docs/en/…/06-other-features.html?h….

There would be a few levels of complexity to it. But if you’re hosting a lemmy instance already, it shouldn’t be any trouble for you … basically make yourself the only account but allow people to federate with your instance. Add your own modified front end too if you like (as lemmy has separate backend and front end software stacks AFAIU). Interestingly, I think it would be a cool project for people to work on … a front end suitable for hosting a single (or even multi) user blog on the fediverse.

An additional option would be microblog: docs.microblog.pub. It’s a single-user fediverse platform written in python and relying on sqlite (which sounds to me like a nice sweet spot for single-user instances).

jax OP ,
@jax@lemmy.cloudhub.social avatar

Ahh, I didn’t get that far in the docs, but seeing as there are no (that I can tell) post limits, running a blog on Lemmy would work pretty well with a bit of a UI change.

maegul ,
@maegul@lemmy.ml avatar

Yep, totally, there’s search, sorting, comments etc, all in one backend.

A neat blog-focused front-end would actually be super awesome IMO. Many want to be on the fediverse but interact just through blogs. A sort of blogo-verse (not sphere). Lemmy might be the best foundation to make that happen.

KaKi87 ,
@KaKi87@jlai.lu avatar

Hi,

A neat blog-focused front-end would actually be super awesome IMO.

I so agree. Did you find any ?

At first I considered using the official Lemmy UI with custom CSS & JS injected, but versioning is still zero-based (0.y.z), which means breaking changes can happen at any time, and that can cause huge issues with customization.

Now I’m considering alternative clients, like Alexandrite, but it’s unsupported despite being maintained.

Many want to be on the fediverse but interact just through blogs. A sort of blogo-verse (not sphere).

Did anyone achieve this yet, whether using Lemmy or something else ?

Thanks

maegul ,
@maegul@lemmy.ml avatar

Well there are blogging platforms for the fediverse (ie they federate) I forget their names but in it sure WriteFreely is one.

Beyond that, Wordpress has integrations now with the fediverse which federate as user accounts. It seems to work ok, in that I’ve seen blogs appear in mastodon. But one point of friction I think is how comments are federated. Maybe it works fine but I’m key sure they’ve made a choice to not federate comments from Wordpress to mastodon so there’s context collapse.

Otherwise, the idea I’m thinking of hasn’t been realised yet AFAICT. TBF, it would probably require more than a front end for lemmy, I suspect some backend features would be required too. Nothing too big I’d think. But alas no. Still think it’s be cool!

maegul ,
@maegul@lemmy.ml avatar

That being said, it’s not too hard to run a blog out of lemmy. Just start dedicated communities with moderator posting only and you’re good. Front end might be lacking in someway but that alone goes pretty far.

KaKi87 ,
@KaKi87@jlai.lu avatar

Yeah I already studied all federated blogging options, unfortunately none actually federate like true Fediverse apps.

I suspect some backend features would be required too

Hmm, there sure could be useful additions but I don’t think it’s missing anything required though, on the back-end.

The front-end, however, is far from being usable for a blog.

Front end might be lacking in someway but that alone goes pretty far.

Well, a Lemmy front-end, whether official or third-party, for a blog, makes sense for an existing Lemmy user, but for sure doesn’t for anyone not knowing what Lemmy is, that’s why customization is required on this part.

Hmmm, at the risk of being annoying, I’m wondering what you’re thinking of exactly. I’m guessing something that’s streamlined in a few ways, like without upvoting etc. and related sorting options? Probably a bit of a facelift too and some elements that make it clear what community/blog you’re looking at?

As I’m writing this I’m thinking that it would probably make sense to have a built in web view specifically for outsiders to see a community as a blog.

KaKi87 ,

I’m wondering what you’re thinking of exactly.

  • Removing Communuties, Create post, Create community from menu ;
  • Adding local communities directly to the menu, used as categories ;
  • Adding posts from a “pages community” directly to the menu, e.g. About me ;
  • Removing Trending communities and Trending/Local/All filters from the homepage ;
  • Removing Blocks, Languages, Show NSFW content, Blur NSFW content, Bot Account, Show Bot Accounts, Show Read Posts, Import/Export Settings from settings ;

without upvoting etc. and related sorting options?

No, these are useful.

Yes.

A blog-focused front-end, as you said. Either that, or customization of the official front-end (but not while unstable).
