I was literally going to say crystal sage before I read your full post. I’ve never once gotten through a DS3 run without dying several times to him, and I’ve probably played a dozen or more times. Even with the throwing knives cheese.

I was not impressed. Guy goes camping on the family estate and writes about it like its life or death and he can't just leave at any time to a posh life if he feels like it.

GrappleHat ,
@GrappleHat@lemmy.ml avatar

He didn’t write “like it’s life or death”! Most of the book are meditations on nature and descriptions of landscape. If that’s what you came away with then you missed the point.

HubertManne ,

I mean its been awhile but I recall him musing about a squirel or some other animal and how he would like to eat it do to hunger.

GrappleHat ,
@GrappleHat@lemmy.ml avatar

The part you remember was not about eating the animal due to hunger. He was observing that when he was away from “civilization” for long enough he noticed that he started to think in a more primal way. In that case, it was tearing a squirrel to shreds raw with his teeth! (or something) :)

HubertManne ,

I guess thats what I mean about life and death. Like his experience was so arduous that he was getting primal. Please.

There was a study done by a university a while back that had hundreds of randomly selected women rate headshots of men from 1 to 10 in various stages of hair, from full thick head of hair to completely smooth bald.

They plotted the results and found that the full head of hair pictures averaged the highest, as you would expect. Then as the baldness increased, the average ratings dropped extremely quickly.

However, once the pictures got to the 100% bald men, the average ratings shot back up nearly identical to the full head of hair pictures.

The conclusion of the researchers: if you care about being perceived as attractive to women as a balding male, you need to commit to one or the other hard. Either get hair transplant surgery, get a high quality hairpiece, or commit to the bald look hardcore and shave it butter smooth.

The worst thing you can do from that perspective is to let the balding hair just kind of grow out all partial/thin.

I guess it’s the classic stereotype, the thing the majority of women are attracted to is confidence. So if you’re going bald, commit hardcore to the bald look, embrace hats, jewelry, and clothing that emphasizes your head shape and face, experiment with facial hair styles if you can grow it.

Keep your skin clean and your head held high. Lots of sexy bald guys out there, your worth as a person isn’t held in your hair.

My balding grandpa dressed like the classic dorky old man; shorts pulled up over his belly, tucked-in baggy polo, socks pulled up to his knees with dad-sandals, and a dirty trucker cap worn crooked on his head with giant yellow-brown glasses. But damn if he wasn’t the most confident man I’ve ever met. Humble, calm, but super hard worker and very driven, also honest as the day is long. Married happily to my grandma for over 40 years until freak cancer took him early.

Hundreds a people from all over the country came to his service, the amount of lives he had positively impacted was incredible. So many people pulled me aside to tell me what a great man my grandpa was, it was powerful.

Statlerwaldorf , to games in What are some good games worth buying on play store?

I HATE playing mobile games but my wife got me hooked on Dawncaster. It’s a roguelike deck builder. I think it’s like $4-5 and no micro transactions but there are expansion packs to add new zones and enemies. I’ve since picked them all up. It’s regularly updated with free content packs and balance changes. The devs are very responsive with the community.

Didn’t get to watch it until after work. As far as the episode went, I enjoyed it. So far IMO better than the previous season. I do agree with your analysis on the subject matter but still got some laughs out of those moments that are in the background or random elements of humor (Zoidberg’s main moment in this episode). Sorry trying not to be too vague while keeping from giving away spoilers.

dirtySourdough , to nostupidquestions in Why are weather apps so bad at telling you the current weather?

Weather prediction at point locations is extremely challenging to get right because we simply can’t observe and make predictions for every single square inch of the earth. Many weather models are run on grids with boxes about the size of a few kilometers at the smallest scale, which means that any physical process in the atmosphere that is the size of that box or smaller won’t be represented well by the model.

Specifically on your point about clouds passing over your location, cloud and precipitation formation is even more challenging. Clouds and precipitation form due to atmospheric processes ranging from hundreds of kilometers all the way down to micrometers, which practically means the weather models are making an educated guess (albeit a very good one that is informed by scientific research) about when and where clouds will form. And when a model does predict a cloud, it will cover an entire grid box.

Finally, I saw you made a comment about how machine learning should improve forecasts, and in fact it does! But the weather community is still working on data driven models (as opposed to models that solve physical atmospheric equations), and most of them are run by private companies so their output is not free. As these data driven models get better, it may be possible that they will be able to make predictions at scales less than a kilometer.

SteveTech , to linux in I wonder if its possible to pass a already existing windows install into qemu (fedora 40 kde)

Are you only using QEMU, or are you using some sort of wrapper around it? QEMU is quite advanced, if you aren’t already, I’d recommend you use some sort of GUI like virt-manager or something.

Can you share your config?

Does it BSOD or just reboot after the Windows logo?

You might have to pass the drives through as IDE, Windows might not have the proper drivers for anything else. Once you can get it booting you can mount a blank drive as virtio, install the virtio drivers, and then change the OS drive to virtio.

Kevver , to nostupidquestions in Why are weather apps so bad at telling you the current weather?

Some airports are still reporting temps once an hour, so the info you get from an app can be old and irrelevant. Also some apps use a forecast made days before, they are too cheap/busy to update it.

Since you’re stuck with baldness until the skin is treated, maybe have fun with it? Get some kids’ WASHABLE markers and let your friends’ kids draw on it.
