They make window heat pump units now. Might work as a cheap mini split alt.

I don’t know the price points but I appreciate the suggestion.

The window units are much more efficient than the portables with hoses. A lot less loss.

Very good to know, thank you.

SlakrHakr , to asklemmy in What is a product you would never recommend?

Roku anything

I have a tv from them and one day the PBS kids app just stopped working. I contacted customer support and they just told me it was the app developer’s fault, nothing to be done. Waited months thinking it would eventually resolve but never did.

And recently where they:

  1. Blocked people from using their tvs until they accepted a new agreement and
  2. Filed for a patent that defines how they can start overlaying ads on top of other connected devices over hdmi

Glad I shut off wifi to my tv years ago and plugged in a separate smart tv hdmi dongle. And not getting anywhere near anything that says Roku on the packaging again.

OxidantZero ,

I’ve never had a Roku TV, but I’ve been using two of their HDMI connected devices for years.

I’ve never had an issue, but one is too old and needs replacing. What alternatives would you suggest I have a look at?

SlakrHakr ,

We’ve used the Amazon firestick before and it worked well. Currently we use the google chromecast/tv dongle for both ours tvs.

Nice thing about the google one is that it makes any Google movie/tv show purchases available, and Amazon movie purchases are still available through the Amazon video app.

But they’re pretty comparable. Depends mostly on what ecosystem you’re in or would prefer to be in.

xnx , to fediverse in What do you want to have in a Lemmy instance?

People who are interested in and have knowledge on topics other than tech

PhilipTheBucket OP ,

I want to have artistic and photographic content and make the interface less GTK-like, especially on mobile, to try to make it acceptable to the normal people. I am techie so I think it will always have a significant tech vibe, but yes. If it had about 80% fewer people talking about Linux and US politics, I think that would represent a big improvement in the experience.

rhythmisaprancer , to nostupidquestions in what is with child names like Aiden, Braiden etc?
@rhythmisaprancer@moist.catsweat.com avatar

I understand the pushback against names like this, and concern for kids receiving these names, but I think it is misdirected. Ya, sure, maybe sometimes the name is literally made up, or in other cases has multiple variations on a theme, but anyone with immigration in their ancestry can tell you that naming conventions do not always move well to other countries. In the USA, we have multiple spellings for names like Muhammed and Dermitt because of this. I don't see why this is a big deal and think it potentially enriches culture.

  • If you need medical care, get fucking medical care. Seriously. It will get worse if you ignore it, whatever “it” happens to be.
  • Following the above, have at least one trusted advocate (partner, family member, friend, doesn’t matter) who can explain any chronic issues, typical medications, etc., and who can and will advocate on your behalf with medical professionals in e.g., a hospital setting as and when necessary.

DaedalousIlios , to asklemmy in What isn't illegal but should be?
@DaedalousIlios@pawb.social avatar

Surprised to see no one has said cigarettes yet. Not only are you poisoning yourself, it’s harmful to everyone else around you that has to inhale that shit.

Xanderill ,

In the same vein, driving gas cars

DaedalousIlios ,
@DaedalousIlios@pawb.social avatar

I would vastly prefer that gas cars be phased out. But I believe that this is a bit different:

Cigarettes don’t offer any benefit beyond making you “feel good.” And you don’t need cigarettes to feel good, and, in fact, literally any other option is better for both you, and everyone around you, save for harder drugs.

Gasoline cars, while poisonous to the world around us, also offer us far greater benefits: supplies and logistics, we can carry goods further, wider, and faster than we ever could without them. And because of that, without them, sure we’d pollute a lot less, but then we’d have a far harder time carrying critical resources to more remote parts of the world where trains and planes can’t reach, and people would starve or lack critical medicine.

As it stands, EVs are not a reliable substitute. They’re getting there, I want them to get there, but I disagree with the notion that cars should be made illegal as things currently stand. I don’t think it’s nearly as cut and dry as cigarettes are. I can only hope to live long enough to see a world where gas powered cars could be outlawed without leaving hundreds of millions of people high and dry.

Tak ,
@Tak@lemmy.ml avatar

Honestly it’s always so weird to hear complaints of bias. The languages you speak, cultures you engage with, class you were born into, and so many other factors will give you a natural bias that you can’t avoid. I am naturally biased to find eating bugs, repulsive but the massive water bugs (lobsters) are classy.

There is no such thing as unbiased and the closest we get is though science.
