Assian_Candor , to amateur_radio in Random question for today: Considering people who are not amateurs, if you wanted to create increased visibility and participation in amateur radio, what would you do?
@Assian_Candor@hexbear.net avatar

Honestly spawn a ton of pirate fm radio stations

Radio is super cool and it’s criminal that we allowed the fencing of these commons. If pirate radio started popping up in massive quantities so as to make enforcement impossible, that would be really cool, and beneficial to society in terms of giving people access to non right wing perspectives and exposure to music that’s not the same 10 songs of Dad Rock on 95.5 the edge

vk6flab OP ,
@vk6flab@lemmy.radio avatar

Amateur Radio is regulated, as is radio in general, because it all uses the same limited resource, shared radio spectrum.

The reason that mobile phones, Bluetooth, WiFi, emergency services, aviation and “the edge” work at all is because it’s so heavily regulated.

Radio licensing isn’t a fencing of commons, it’s essential to make it work at all.

Consider for example a phenomenon called harmonics. A transmitter on one frequency also emits signal at multiples of that frequency. This is true for all transmitters. So what you do on one frequency affects other users on other frequencies.

Assian_Candor ,
@Assian_Candor@hexbear.net avatar

Thanks for your thought out and reasoned response

I guess it depends on where you are but outside of major cities, aka the vast majority of the us, there’s nothing on most of the FM spectrum other than dead air. As long as harmonics are properly filtered the harm from low power FM transmission would be relatively limited in my view. The Internet makes the dissemination of proper broadcasting practice much easier. Opening up the spectrum for low power transmission would do a lot to get folks interested in radio in my view.

Although thinking about all the nuclear takes I am constantly bombarded with online maybe giving folks another medium for self expression isn’t the best idea lol

vk6flab OP ,
@vk6flab@lemmy.radio avatar

So, those harmonics I mentioned, for the FM broadcast band between 88 MHz and 109 MHz, they’re between 176 MHz and 218 MHz.

Guess what?

They’re allocated to other services, specifically television and digital audio broadcasting.

I can guarantee if you power up a “low power FM transmission” that the FCC will come and find you and rain hellfire on you.

It would be entertaining for the audience to be sure, but I’m not convinced that it would “get folks interested in radio”. You could do a roaring trade in popcorn.

In case you’re not convinced, the FCC fines are hefty and low power isn’t a thing. My legal amateur radio beacon uses 10 milliwatts and has been heard 13,945 km (8,665 miles) away.

So, regardless of content, that’s not the way to win friends…

but I’m not convinced that it would “get folks interested in radio”.

People are put off of amateur radio because so many hams are extremely cop-brained and expect everyone should have to comply to century old rules and norms about how to operate otherwise it’s assumed that you’re just blowing up the spectrum

I am a licensed amateur and the only thing that changed from when I was unlicensed is that the boomers on the FM voice repeaters around me won’t yell at me for interrupting their conversation about their ex-wives or whatever now

Good RF circuitry has never been easier to make/acquire now that we live in the era of semiconductors

low power isn’t a thing. My legal amateur radio beacon uses 10 milliwatts and has been heard 13,945 km (8,665 miles) away.

Yeah and my WiFi router blasting 10 times that barely makes it through a couple of walls

Completely dependent on conditions and equipment

I can guarantee if you power up a “low power FM transmission” that the FCC will come and find you and rain hellfire on you.

Also, lmao, there have been some high-profile cases and they have the PIRATE act now but there’s still lots of pirate FM stations out there lol

Pirate radio ≠ amateur radio.

In the US at least, the barriers to entry to get one’s license has fallen so dramatically that there is no excuse to get the license and operate in harmony with all others.

Part of being a good amateur is operating within the very generous band plan we enjoy, so generous that everything one would do under pirate radio can be done while licensed: 135khz all the way above 275Ghz.

That the rules are a century old, with periodic revisions, is testament to their flexibility and continued pertinence; they’ve so far stood the test of time.

Are there dunces on the amateur spectrum? Certainly. There’s dunces at the supermarket, too. That’s inescapable. That “cop-brained” mentality you’ve mentioned is not a symptom of the amateur rules nor your so-called cop-brained mentality, but the natural desire to protect a privilege we enjoy.

The treatment you earned on the repeaters while operating unlicensed is on you.

Folks like you just jerk each other off about how smart open source users are and how dumb proprietary software users are and it’s just so cringy.

It helps having friends who actually respect you.

MerchantsOfMisery ,

And how many peoples’ friends and family are on Signal vs WhatsApp? The whole point of these apps is socializing with people you know, so can you not see how useless of a suggestion it is to recommend Signal? And please don’t get into the "just convince everyone to use Signal’ argument because it’s completely unrealistic.

Signal did itself no favors when it made the bone-headed move of removing SMS support in a delusional attempt at pushing users away from SMS and towards Signal’s encrypted chat. All it did was result in a bunch of people uninstalling the app because it became annoying to use it just for Signal instead of Signal and SMS, which at least gave rise to a SMS user’s eventual shift away from SMS. But we don’t talk about that because open source is always good 😇

It’s like saying modern clubs suck, so I’m going to invest my own club that the vast majority of people won’t attend and those that do are almost all white dudes with the same generic "I’m not like other users" personality.

Signal had absolutely never done anything remotely as “bone-headed” as collecting user data and using it to serve you ads.

    Your form of entitlement involves everyone working around your preferences, and you try to justify it with this weird paternalistic "I know what’s best for you" attitude. Second hwtest suite.

    Distros just ship packages, some rare drivers may be missing, distros have different versions of drivers, some are external and packagers just take proprietary code and make it compatible, like with NVIDIA on Fedora.

    GregorGizeh , to nostupidquestions in You a sales bargain hunter or do you pay normal?

    Depends a lot on what I am looking to buy.

    I generally avoid anything with visible branding, aside from sneakers where it is largely a given and I found some nikes that work well with my feet.

    I do look to buy quality/durability where possible, within budgetary reason, I try not to contribute to our mountains of garbage too much. Naturally i also avoid short fashion which will look bad next year, which is luckily pretty easy as a man.

    For most other things aside from clothing I generally follow the military grade system: buy the cheapest thing meeting your needs. I generally have an initial idea what I am looking for (I basically never go on a sort of unprompted or unguided shopping spree just to buy something) and the needed properties, and I will opt for whatever does what I need the least expensive.

    For food and groceries i generally buy organic store brand, though a few brand products just taste irreplaceable, so i go with those.

    Paperback. For big books maybe hardcover so it stays in one piece, but tbh all the 1000+ page books I have are still paperbacks. Even if they were the same price, I think paperbacks are easier to hold and read since they’re more flexible. But the sturdiness of hardbacks can be nice sometimes

    Taalnazi , to asklemmy in Books - Do you prefer Paperback or Hardcover?

    Personally I’d like me some blend between paperback and hardcover.

    Paperbacks can be laid flat (but damage quickly), hardcovers not as easily (but don’t damage quickly).

    Anticorp , to nostupidquestions in How does renouncing citizenship work?

    Does that have any effects back in country A?

    Yes, you lose all the rights you have as a citizen. That means you’ll need a passport and/or visa to visit if one is required, you can’t live there anymore without a formal agreement like a work visa, you don’t get any health insurance offered, you can’t get government assistance, you can’t vote, you can’t own firearms if that’s allowed, and any other rights that citizens in your home country have. You are no longer a citizen.

    Maggoty ,

    This all requires positively going through a process. It’s not automatic.

    Power outages do happen, and I’m pretty sure 90% of the people on this community are not using an UPS.

    Given enough users and enough time, it’s inevitable that a power outage will happen to some people at an inopportune moment, like while updating an important package like the kernel.

    Blaming the user for this is not fair, it’s just dumb bad luck.

    That said, OP could have done a bit more to fix the issue instead of being an angry man yelling at the cloud. When you’re using Arch, the expectation is that you are able to fix relatively simple problems like this, or that you’re at least willing to learn it. If you find yourself getting angry when Arch doesn’t hold your hand, you probably shouldn’t have chosen Arch.

    possiblylinux127 ,

    To be fair a lot of Linux distros and other operating systems try to be careful on how they do things. Arch is the odd man out.
