messem10 , to jrpg in FF XVI - opinions?

I like it so far, but it definitely has glaring pacing issues. Reminds me a lot of the ebb and flow of FFXIV ARR prior to the changes to streamline it. Some boss battles really overstayed their welcome as they were 2-3 cycles too long in some parts. Made what was supposed to be a huge climatic battle into one of attrition, both health recovery and physically with having to mash the square button constantly.

Am ~60% through the game according to the bit on the PS5 dashboard/menu.

surfrock66 , to linux in Which DE would be a better fit for awesomeWM?
@surfrock66@lemmy.world avatar

For a long time my setup was mate with Compton and awesome but I had to switch to just mate as my family and kids started using the computer more. Mate’s gtk suite is lightweight and complements awesome well as it gets out of the way, and caja/pluma/etc worked well with very few rough edges.

donescobar , (edited ) to selfhosted in What is your machine naming scheme?

I use a naming convention for my homelab stuff that is descriptive enough for future reference in case I don’t touch the machine in a while.

<organization or domain><server type><sequence>

so for example if you have a local domain you use for internal work and the name is Leet Hax my naming would look something like this

leethax_prd01, leethax_prd02, leethax_proxmox01, leethax_nextcloud01, leethax_plex01

you get the idea, in my network I don’t add the underscore but I figured for explanation sakes I would here. I’m sure without explaining what each server is, whether it’s a VM from proxmox or an actual machine, you know what they are when they show up on your router. I added the sequence numbering for future proofing my self hosted setup in case I get another machine in the future.

I name my personal devices after Nasa projects and launches and my wife, well her phone is just called iPhone 1, 2, 3 etc. so everything is easy to spot on my home network.

My pixel is named iPhone… lol

donescobar ,

Hahaha I started naming my things weird shit to throw people off but you took it to the next level, I’m definitely renaming my pixel too

EeeDawg101 , to gaming in FFXVI - Am I crazy?

Ff16 is the first final fantasy game I’ve played (so I can’t compare to the others like you can) and at first I felt like this but now that I’m 17 hours in, I get it. It’s just how this game is, it’s not open world. Each area is it’s own thing that you take in.

Games are like an interactive movie and there’s a ratio of moviness to gaminess and this one leans heavier on the moviness side.

Idk just thinking out loud.

ursakhiin OP ,

Yeah. I get it. I’m not really even thinking about it as a Final Fantasy game with a lot of this. My callbacks to FFXIV are because that’s an MMO and we expect the concessions in MMOs to repetitive animations and lower tier graphics to allow for the content churn. For a new game to just look and feel like a 10 year old MMO with graphics is kinda rough.

This game feels like they meant to have a ton more and just didn’t in the end. Not every game needs an open world but if I do compare it to other FF games, it definitely feels the least open.

I have felt some of the boss fights were really good. I guess I would have just given it a 5 or 6.

I think I’m mostly upset by how much acclaim it’s been getting.

EeeDawg101 ,

I def get what you mean, it isn’t very fleshed out compared to other games that are in the same (apparent) league that the reviews are putting it in. I was just playing a little bit ago and did another of the side quests where you deliver food to people and it’s just so simple seeming (and repetitive since it happens more than once). But in a way I also like the simpleness of it. Maybe it’s appeasing to a certain part of the brain in people where it either clicks or it doesn’t and that is what is responsible for the reviews.

VoxAdActa ,

Games are like an interactive movie and there’s a ratio of moviness to gaminess and this one leans heavier on the moviness side.

The last Final Fantasy game I played was 8, and it was exactly because of this. They stripped out almost all the “game” bits (although they did give us a really cool card game minigame) and turned it into basically a movie you could occasionally interact with. The battles were mindless (there was no reason not to use your strongest summon every round, because it was both more effective than anything else and because it was totally free to do so), the “equipment” system was entirely optional (which was good, because interacting with it required mega-grind), and overland travel was a total afterthought. It was more of a “game” than anything Tell Tale put out, but that’s a low bar, since Tell Tale only produces movies that sometimes throw in an attention check in the form of a quicktime event.

It was a real shame, because I had entirely switched system allegiance from Nintendo to Playstation just for FF7. Then the followed it up with 8, and it was obvious where they were taking the franchise. So I’m not surprised to see, all these years later, that the newest FF game is even more of that.

folkrav , to android in Discussion: Brand Loyalty vs. Exploring New Brands

Will never ever be loyal to a brand. I go case by case, when I need a piece of tech, I check what’s currently on the market, and decide from there. I do seem to have some preferences, as I came back to Nexus/Pixel multiple times. But I switched to other things too.

AFKBRBChocolate , to lemmyshitpost in I know not everyone will agree with me; but I am just a simple dopamine-addicted neurodivergent who wants to see their total karma/upvotes on their u/ page.

I think the way it’s implemented is good. You can get your validation by seeing the upvotes on a single post or comment, but since the basic interface itself doesn’t total them, people aren’t as driven to say things just for the upvotes. It’s like those speed signs that tell you how fast you’re going: if you measure something like that, people will try to get the “top score” (which is why most of those have been replaced with ones that just say “too fast” over a certain speed).

Since the counts are there, individual apps can sum them up and display that, but it’s not basic to Lemmy.

Seems a better alternative frontend than invidious. I will check that. Thanks for sharing 🌞

I’ve been using invidious. There’s an automatic install script that’s perfect, except I’m using mint instead of straight ubuntu so I have to tweak the script a bit to use the ubuntu path.

Yup. Those farts don’t understand that the only reason streaming took off like it did is because it was more convenient than piracy and cheaper than cable TV. That’s no longer the case.

xoggy , to linux in How do you keep track of all apps you install and their configurations?

NixOS stores a snapshot of your OS and all the app configs in an OS config folder for you. Helpful for instant system recovery or deploying the setup to new hardware.

warmaster , to linux in Why is Linux so frustrating for some people?

Lots of things don’t have a GUI, if we expect users to eat up the CLI, the year of the Linux desktop will never come.

flashgnash ,

I think gnome is almost there tbh, has all the things you’d expect of a normal computer

Can’t be expected to go full windows where literally every little buried system feature has a GUI on it

Think anyone who wants to use Linux for their non-techy day to day for the most part can now, I think only problem is with moderately techy people who want to do weird stuff with their machines but don’t know Linux well enough

stappern ,

Good

ScreaminOctopus ,

Idk if this is really true, I don’t what situations you need to use the command line in Ubuntu or Fedora that would affect more than 10% of users max. You install packages through the store, wifi can be managed through the gui, external drives mount automatically. Imo this should cover the use case for almost everyone.

warmaster ,

Things you can’t do with a GUI:

  • you can’t manage advanced power management profiles
  • you can’t manage devices
  • you can’t manage services
  • you can’t manage firewall in GNOME
  • Device Security is almost useless
  • There’s no versioned backup system that does both user files & system snapshots integrated into the Desktop Environment and the DE settings app.
  • There’s no DCONF equivalent for KDE (that I know of), the need for DCONF shouldn’t even exist.
  • No integrated, easy to use & performant remote desktop software (VNC is not enough, RDP in GNOME just doesn’t work, Sunshine is a pain to setup)

I’m an Arch user, so I’ll talk about it below:

  • There’s no real GUI for Pacman, Pamac is known for horrible stuff. Alternatives are very inferior.
  • There’s no GUI for system updates integrated into the settings app

3rd party crap:

  • Nvidia (nuff said)
  • Flatpak (convenient, but it’s still a mess)

Props to:

  • AMD, I love you guys.
ScreaminOctopus ,

The firewall thing is definitely a major oversight.

Similar experience with Voyager and Jerboa on Android specially when there was an influx of users. It was easier to login late at night.

I solved it. Turns out if the password is long/complex enough, I have problems logging in from my iPhone.
