lagomorphlecture , to gaming in Where to even start with Final Fantasy?

The only single player ones I’ve ever played have been 1 and 7. 1 was…old. The mechanics and everything remind me of Dragon Warrior but I kind of honestly just prefer Dragon Warrior (although I guess that one is also nostalgic because I remember watching my dad play it as a kid).

7 is much more modern but still pretty old at this point. It has a good story and interesting characters. It’s been a while and I don’t remember what the actual gameplay was like but I don’t remember it being turn based.

I’ve also watched my BF play quite a bit of Final Fantasy Tactics and that’s just what it sounds like, a very tactical turn based game. Not for me but some people really like that style of game so that’s something to look into if it appeals to what you’re looking for.

I also played a little bit of Final Fantasy 14 online and it was fun, although not the styles of MMO I personally prefer. But again it’s all personal preference and if you like MMOs you should look it up because you might want to consider that instead of one of the single player games.

SkepticElliptic ,

I could never get into 7/8 because of the graphics on the ps1 everything was so jagedy save hard to look at.

lagomorphlecture ,

Yeah those are definitely from that time period where games were starting to get more modern but are still very dated by today’s standards.

SkepticElliptic ,

Well, even at the time it was bad compared to many games on SNES and N64. It was because of the graphics type that Sony chose to use.

Coding is the future

Yeah according to coders lol

Fediverse just skews tech heavy. The average person doesn't even know what a file is.

That is a clear example of that there are legitimate things that you want to keep private.

electric_nan , to selfhosted in Hey selfhosters, what are you selfhosting?

At home I have a Dell Power edge tower running Yunohost. The apps on there are Nextcloud, Navidrome, Gotify and HomeAssistant. It reaches the internet via tunnel to a wireguard server on an Ubuntu vps. I also have another vps which hosts Jellyfin, qbittorrent and the *arrs. I set that up using swizzin community edition on Ubuntu.

That media setup took a long time and many iterations to get working smooth. I tried a few docker-based setups early on, but none of them were simple enough for me to understand. For the home server, I’ve never had a reason to look for alternatives. Yunohost is awesome.

aubertlone , to fediverse in I can't code.

Honestly, I would start with learning JavaScript.

Anything in the browser runs on JavaScript, and it’s a very forgiving language to learn for beginners.

what do y’all think about the star labs laptops?

CrabAndBroom ,

I’d never heard of them before so I took a look. There’s a lot there I like the sound of - removable webcam, physical kill switch for the wireless, CoreBoot and it seems to run 4K @165hz so it’s presumably a bit of a beast. The price is a little eye-watering though lol.

PurrJPro OP ,

Yeah I’m considering getting one simply bc of the affordability. They also seem to be pretty highly regarded (if the amount of recommendations I’ve gotten says anything)

constantokra , (edited )

You could get the education edition. I have a new yoga 11e and it has a great keyboard, and it’s just… way too good for the money (250 bucks). I love that if I break or lose it I can just get an idenical one for super cheap in a couple days. But they’re made for kids so they’re pretty durable anyway.

InverseParallax ,

No question, excellent compatibility, will last you a while, you can get a nicer one once you get comfortable.

Spent $500 on this one to hold you over till you can afford a framework, or spend less, you can still get by with a decent one for $250 or so.

I agree, I have two Thinkpads, an older T450S that lives out in the shop for me to reference things, and my mainstay which is a T480S. If OP does want to do video editing or gaming or anything that might be more intensive, I also have had a Legion 5 and similarly had absolutely no problems with Linux on it.

How’s the software update support these days? I owned a few Xperia back in the day and that was a weak point at the time.

noneabove1182 ,

Security patches are out monthly less than a week after Google releases, OS updated are slower but have been getting better, only major downside is the lack of commitment to more than 2 years of OS, real kick in the shins for such an expensive phone but alas I’m a sucker for all it’s other offerings

undrwater ,

What features are those? Camera related?

noneabove1182 ,

Camera is nice and especially unique so that is a bonus, but for me it’s the physical fingerprint scanner, SD card slot, headphone jack, front firing speakers, and no notch in a flagship from a reputable company, could drop several of those requirements and not find any options and this has all of them

eric5949 , to linux in what counts as a distro

Idk I know they don’t fit into the usual open source box of Linux but I’d consider Android and ChromeOS as Linux distros, a distro is just a collection of software distributed with the Linux kernel as far as I’m aware. If someone doesn’t consider them “Linux distros” it’s probably due to the proprietary nature of some of the software surrounding the kernel. No idea why kde thinks neon isnt a distro when it literally is.

Edit: in the case of chrome os it’s not even just built around the kernel, it’s based on a distro.

I’ll be honest, I have no special love for samsung products… But I have both the S8+ and a Galaxy Flip, atm. The former because it’s the best sized tablet for reading comics and the latter because I remembered how fun it was to have a flip phone.

Starfighter , to selfhosted in Setting up your own VPN

Was running wireguard and am now in the process of changing over to Tailscale (Headscale).

It uses wireguard for the actual connections but manages all the wireguard configs for you.

IamPic ,

Why have you decided to switch?

Starfighter ,

Getting the configs to work with my personal devices was already a little finicky but doing that for not-so-technical family members was starting to be a bit too much work for me.

I’m hoping that Headscale will cut that down to pointing their app at the server and having them enter their username and password.

spencer ,

I came here to say exactly this - WireGuard is great and easy to set up, but it gets harder as you add more people, especially less technical ones, as getting them to make keys and move them around etc becomes a headache. Tailscale also minimizes the role of the central server, so if your box goes down the VPN can still function. Tailscale can also do some neat stuff with DNS that’s pretty nifty.

witten ,

One thing that helped a ton with that for Wireguard (for either you or anyone else reading this) is: You can generate QR codes for a peer’s full Wireguard config! So you can create the images on your computer and then a non-technical user can just scan the code to get configured.
